Primary retroperitoneal mucinous tumors are rare. In this study, a 19-year-old female with a giant retroperitoneal ovarian mucinous cystadenoma and superinfection was reported, alongside an analysis of 85 cases. The patient had fever and a palpable mass, with imaging showing a 23 cm x 13 cm x 27 cm cystic lesion and elevated levels of CA199 and ferritin. The tumor was fully removed and confirmed as a mucinous cystadenoma with infection. Our review shows that these tumors mainly occur in young to middle-aged adults (86.1%) and vary in size (3-30 cm) and about 17.3% of tumors are giant (>20 cm).

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct (IPNB) represents a biliary papillary tumor mainly growing in the bile duct lumen resembling intraductal papillary mucin-producing neoplasm of the pancreas. However, its clinical spectrum and characteristics have not been fully evaluated.

A number of cDNA fragments coding for bovine submaxillary mucin (BSM) were cloned, and the nucleotide sequence of the largest clone, BSM421, was determined. BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors with papillary architecture and intestinal-like mucinous cytologic features are rare. Their clinicopathologic and genetic features are not fully understood, and whether they represent one separate entity remains unclear.
METHODS: Six salivary adenocarcinomas with papillary architecture and intestinal-like mucinous cytologic features were reported. OBJECTIVES: To characterise mucins in cancer of the colon and compare these with controls using stringent biochemical measures to avoid endogenous proteolysis.
DESIGN: Crude mucus scrapings were collected from 12 specimens obtained by colectomy. Specimens from 3 traumatic colectomies and 1 sigmoid volvulus were used as controls, and compared with 6 specimens from colons resected for adenocarcinoma and 2 irradiated colons.
SUBJECTS: The median age of the 4 female patients was 76 years (range 49 - 82 years), and of the 8 male patients 46.5 years (range 16 - 74 years).

The involvement of calmodulin (CaM) in rat submandibular gland mucin secretion was investigated in vitro using a dispersed cell preparation.
