INTRODUCTION: Adult rhabdomyoma (ARM) is an exceedingly rare benign neoplasm accounting for less than 2% of all striated muscle tumors. Originating from striated muscle cells, it primarily occurs in the head and neck region but is particularly rare in the parapharyngeal space.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 64-year-old male patient who presented with a 6-month history of progressive dysphagia and globus pharyngeus. CT and MRI scans revealed a well-defined multilobular mass in the right parapharyngeal space. Surgical excision was performed, and histopathological evaluation confirmed

Patients with advanced cancer often succumb to complications arising from striated muscle wasting associated with cachexia. Excessive activation of the type IIB activin receptor (ActRIIB) is considered an important mechanism underlying this wasting, where circulating procachectic factors bind ActRIIB and ultimately lead to the phosphorylation of SMAD2/3. Therapeutics that antagonize the binding of ActRIIB ligands are in clinical development, but concerns exist about achieving efficacy without off-target effects. To protect striated muscle from harmful ActRIIB signaling, and to reduce the risk

In a number of caimans (Caiman sclerops) we were unable to find traces of myoglobin in any of the histologically clearly cross-striated cardiac and skeletal muscles using spectrometric methods. The red colour of the heart is due to a high concentration of cytochrome c. This substance was also found in the muscles of the neck, back, tail, and the anterior extremities.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal pediatric striated muscle disease caused by loss of dystrophin for which there is no cure. Cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of death among individuals with DMD, and effective therapeutics to treat DMD cardiomyopathy are a major unmet clinical need. This work investigated adeno-associated viral (AAV) gene therapy approaches to treat DMD cardiomyopathy by overexpression of the calcium binding proteins S100A1 and apoptosis repressor with caspase recruitment domain (ARC). Using the severe D2.mdx mouse model of DMD, we identified that S100A1 gene the

Intermediate filaments are major components of the cytoskeleton. Desmin and synemin, cytoplasmic intermediate filament proteins and A-type lamins, nuclear intermediate filament proteins, play key roles in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Desmin, encoded by the DES gene (OMIM *125660) and A-type lamins by the LMNA gene (OMIM *150330), have been involved in striated muscle disorders. Diseases include desmin-related myopathy and cardiomyopathy (desminopathy), which can be manifested with dilated, restrictive, hypertrophic, arrhythmogenic, or even left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy, Emery-

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene, leading to the absence of the dystrophin protein in striated muscle. A significant number of these mutations are premature stop codons. On the basis of the observation that aminoglycoside treatment can suppress stop codons in cultured cells, we tested the effect of gentamicin on cultured muscle cells from the mdx mouse - an animal model for DMD that possesses a premature stop codon in the dystrophin gene. Exposure of mdx myotubes to gentamicin led to the expression and localization of dystrophin to the cell membra

Trichinella spiralis creates a unique intracellular habitat in striated muscle. We report that a proteoglycan, syndecan-1, is induced early in infection yet is not essential for habitat development and exerts a modest influence on the immune response. This report is the first to address the requirement for a specific muscle protein in trichinellosis by using mice deficient in the relevant gene.

The study of children with symmetrical nonprogressive muscle weakness and hypotonia has previously led to the discovery of two new disorders of striated muscle. A third myopathy in a child with hypotonia and proximal weakness is reported. Cytochemical and electron-microscopic studies reveal large, bizarre, interfibrillary and subsarcolemmal mitochondria in muscle obtained by biopsy. Smooth muscle of the vascular wall did not show such abnormalities nor did leucocytes or intramuscular nerves with cytochemical techniques. The basal metabolic rate of the patient was within normal limits.

Mutations in the lamin A/C gene (LMNA) cause several disorders referred to as laminopathies, which include premature aging syndromes, lipodystrophy, and striated muscle disorders. There is evidence that lamin A/C plays a role in gene expression. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short noncoding RNAs regulating mRNAs involved in various biological processes, including the pathophysiology of striated muscles. Here, we profiled the expression of the miRNA transcriptome in skeletal muscle from patients with LMNA-related muscular dystrophy. Results show that control and patient groups can be distinguished bas

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of levator ani muscle morphology on the outcome of patients with genuine stress incontinence undergoing reconstructive surgery of the pelvic floor.
METHODS: A follow-up investigation was performed on 30 patients from a previous study, who had undergone hysterectomy with combined anteroposterior vaginal repair for pelvic floor relaxation and genuine stress incontinence. Biopsy specimens of the pubococcygeal muscle had been obtained during posterior colporrhaphy and subsequently evaluated for evidence of striated muscle tissue. Eleven patients had striated muscle

To identify pathologic alterations, sixteen cows, in the last 3 months of gestation, all cross-breed, Holstein x Zebu, serum positive for Sarcocystis, were selected and divided into four groups of four animals each. The first group was considered as control and the other three groups were experimentally infected with 1x10(4) (2nd group), 5x10(4) (3rd group) and 1x10(5) (4th group) sporocysts obtained from dog's feces. The gross lesions in the cows were consisted of pale mucous membranes, paleness of the skeletal striated muscle and enlargement of lymph nodes, heart, liver, spleen and lungs. In

Jejuno-jejunal intussusception is rarely encountered in adults. Management depends on the viability of the involved bowel. Exploration is favored because in adults generally an underlying 'lead point' is found to be present. Pleimorphic rhabdomyosarcoma (pRMS) arises from striated muscle cells. They are usually diagnosed during childhood and can occur virtually all over the body, controversially in places were few striated cells are found. In adults, these tumors are rare and are mostly encountered in the head-and-neck region. We present the case of a 48-year-old woman with a jejunal metastasi

INTRODUCTION: A critical appraisal of the literature regarding female urethral function and dysfunction is needed in light of recent evidence showing the urethra's role in causing stress and urge urinary incontinence.
METHODS: An evidence assessment was conducted using selected articles from the literature that contained mechanistic data on factors affecting urethral function and failure.
RESULTS: Maximal urethral closure pressure (MUCP) is 40% lower in stress urinary incontinence (SUI) than normal controls. Evidence from five women shows relatively equal contributions to MUCP from striated/

Rhabdomyolysis refers to the destruction or disintegration of striated muscles. This syndrome is characterized by muscle breakdown and necrosis, resulting in the leakage of intracellular muscle constituents into the circulation and extracellular fluid. We report a rare case of rhabdomyolysis complicating multi-organ failure caused by T-cell lymphoma in a 32-year-old woman. The final diagnosis was rhabdomyolysis caused by peripheral T-cell lymphoma based on bone marrow aspirate and biopsy.

Lamins A and C, encoded by the LMNA gene, are nuclear intermediate filaments that provide structural support to the nucleus and contribute to chromatin organization and transcriptional regulation. LMNA mutations cause muscular dystrophies, dilated cardiomyopathy, and other diseases. The mechanisms by which many LMNA mutations result in muscle-specific diseases have remained elusive, presenting a major hurdle in the development of effective treatments. Previous studies using striated muscle laminopathy mouse models found that cytoskeletal forces acting on mechanically fragile Lmna-mutant nuclei

AIM: Loss of dystrophin causes oxidative stress and affects nitric oxide synthase-mediated vascular function in striated muscle. Because tetrahydrobiopterin is an antioxidant and co-factor for nitric oxide synthase, we tested the hypothesis that tetrahydrobiopterin would be low in mdx mice and humans deficient for dystrophin.
METHODS: Tetrahydrobiopterin and its metabolites were measured at rest and in response to exercise in Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy patients, age-matched male controls as well as wild-type, mdx and mdx mice transgenically overexpressing skeletal muscle-specific

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopical injections of Botulinum toxin type A into the detrusor muscle are gaining clinical acceptance in the treatment of neurogenic detrusor overactivity. Structural effects of Botulinum toxin type A are only known from studies on striated muscles, where a widespread nerve sprouting occurs temporarily. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ultrastructural effects of Botulinum toxin type A injections on the human detrusor.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 30 detrusor biopsies were obtained from 24 patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity. Patients were divided into two group

Rhabdomyolysis is a potential life-threatening condition characterized by a rapid destruction of striated muscle cells. Causes include trauma, muscle hypoxia, drugs, malignant hyperthermia, infections, toxins and metabolic myopathies. We report a case of a 52-year-old man with hereditary myoglobi-n-uria and gastroenteritis-induced rhabdomyolysis. Metabolic myopathy as a cause of rhabdomyolysis is rare but potential life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated promptly.

Proliferation of non-neoplastic striated muscle cells in the lung is rare and has been frequently observed in cases of cardiovascular and pulmonary congenital malformations. We present an extremely rare case of pulmonary rhabdomyomatous dysplasia (RD) in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). A male neonate was born at 35 weeks' gestation after normal pregnancy. Postnatally, besides patent ductus arteriosus and posterior mediastinal mass, abnormal cystic lesions in the left upper and lower lung were detected. No bronchial atresia and stenosis were identified. Partial lobectomy specimens showed hypop

Hemorrhoidectomy is the treatment of choice for patients with third or fourth-degree hemorrhoids. Although the majority of surgeons believe that surgical hemorrhoidectomy is the most effective approach with excellent results in the management of hemorrhoid disease, but hemorrhoidectomy is not a simple procedure. One of the complications of this surgery is an injury to anal sphincters that can lead to incontinency in some patients. In this study, we aimed to reveal the percentage of external and internal anal sphincter injuries in surgical hemorrhoidectomy. We prospectively enrolled 128 patient
