BACKGROUND: Gabriele-de Vries syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disease characterized by global development delay/intellectual disability, delayed language development, feeding difficulties, and distinctive facial dysmorphism. It is caused by pathogenic variants in YY1.
METHODS: The current report describes a female patient with motor delay and a facial dysmorphism phenotype. We identified pathogenic mutations in the patient by whole-exome sequencing and confirmed them by Sanger sequencing.
RESULTS: A novel heterozygous frameshift mutation NM_003403.5:c.458_476del (p. V153fs*97)

Knowledge of the bleeding risk and the long-term outcome of conservatively treated patients with cavernous malformations (CM) is poor. In this work, we studied the occurrence of CM-associated hemorrhage over a 10-year period and investigated risk factors for bleeding. Our institutional database was screened for patients with cerebral (CCM) or intramedullary spinal cord (ISCM) CM admitted between 2003 and 2021. Patients who underwent surgery and patients without completed follow-up were excluded. Analyses were performed to identify risk factors and to determine the cumulative risk for hemorrhag

Autosomal recessive otospondylo-mega-epiphyseal dysplasia (OSMEDB) is characterized by short stature with short limbs, dysmorphic facial features, and hearing loss, which is caused by biallelic, loss-of-function, variants in the COL11A2 gene. Geno-phenotypic data from the medical records of eight affected individuals from five unrelated families was abstracted, recorded in an Excel spreadsheet and analyzed using simple frequency analysis. Either short femora or short extremities with or without other ultrasonographic abnormalities were demonstrated in five patients antenatally. The mean height

BACKGROUND: Saddle nose deformity following naso-orbital ethmoidal (NOE) fractures remain a challenging problem for the reconstructive surgeon. Early reduction and internal fixation allow for fracture stabilization but is unable to address the problem of the depressed nasal dorsum, especially after soft tissue shrinkage. The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcome of primary rhinoplasty in patients with NOE fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2016 to 2019, 9 patients presented to our department with NOE fractures complicated by saddle nose deformity underwent primary nasal reconstruct

BACKGROUND Sternal cleft is a greatly rare congenital thoracic deformity, arising from a failure of the sternal bars fusion process that should be completed in the fetal period, the incidence of which is less than 0.15%. CASE REPORT Herein, we present a case report of a newborn girl having a superior congenital sternal cleft. After the baby was born, scar-like tissue was found in the middle of the chest and extended to the root of the umbilical cord. Based on the imaging data, this newborn was diagnosed with sternal cleft belonging to the superior sternal cleft and not associated with other co

PURPOSE: Many etiologies are known to lead to a tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). One rare cause is mass-occupying lesions, and particularly accessory or variant muscles (AVM). This study aimed to systematically collect published clinical cases of TTS caused by AVM.
METHODS: An electronic literature search was conducted from inception to April 2021. The diagnosis of AVM should be reported in one of the following methods: ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or per-operatively. Data extraction included types and prevalence of accessory muscles, clinical presentation and diagnosis, an

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical features, radiologic findings, differential diagnosis, and surgical treatment of a congenital flexion deformity of the middle, ring, and little fingers. The cause of the condition is the aberrant origin of the flexor digitorum profundus, leading to a congenital contracture of the ulnar digits.
METHODS: We reviewed 8 patients with congenital contracture of the ulnar digits. The mean age at the time of surgery was 14 years. An examination revealed a flexion contracture of the middle, ring, and small fingers. Plain radiographs, 3-dimensional computed tomography,

Vascular anomalies impact the musculoskeletal system dependent on the tissue involved (skin, subcutis, muscle, cartilage, or bone), the extent of involvement, and the type of anomalous vessels (arteries, capillaries, veins, or lymphatics). These malformations can cause a multitude of musculoskeletal problems for the patient. Leg-length discrepancy, intra-articular involvement, muscular lesions, and primary or secondary scoliosis are amongst the issues that patients face. All of these problems can cause pain, deformity, and a range of functional limitations. Surgical and nonsurgical treatment p

The primary cilium is a solitary, antenna-like sensory organelle with many important roles in cartilage and bone development, maintenance, and function. The primary cilium's potential role as a signaling nexus in the growth plate makes it an attractive therapeutic target for diseases and disorders associated with bone development and maintenance. Many signaling pathways that are mediated by the cilium-such as Hh, Wnt, Ihh/PTHrP, TGFβ, BMP, FGF, and Notch-are also known to influence endochondral ossification, primarily by directing growth plate formation and chondrocyte behavior. Although a few

The vast majority of primary burials at Neolithic Çatalhöyük (Central Anatolia, Turkey, 7100-6000cal BC) are recovered from beneath house floors, with burials in external spaces extremely rare. Excavations at Çatalhöyük in 1998 brought to light a young adult male buried in a midden (a burial location observed so far for only 4 out of 440 individuals), showing a suite of pathological features affecting the entire skeleton. The observed pathological changes include perimortem and antemortem fractures, proliferative and resorptive areas, thinning of the bone cortex, and localized areas of disorga

Cleft sternum is an extremely rare anomaly of development. It results from failure of fusion of midline structures that contribute to the formation of the sternum. The defect may affect the upper sternum, the lower sternum, or the whole sternum. Most cases are diagnosed in childhood when it is associated with serious midline defects. We present a case of an isolated upper sternal cleft in a 55-year-old adult, found accidentally on bone scan. To our knowledge, no bone scan image of cleft sternum could be found in the literature.

PURPOSE: We previously reported a novel minimally invasive repair for unilateral pectus carinatum. We have now modified this approach for the repair of symmetric bilateral pectus carinatum.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using thoracoscopy, parasternal chondrotomies were performed at multiple rib levels at points of maximal sternal protrusion. The sternum was depressed to an appropriate position and maintained using a suprasternal metal compression bar. The bar was applied in a submuscular plane and anchored to the lateral ribs with sutures. Bars were removed after 6 months.
RESULTS: Three patients

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies have been found more often in children with cancer than in those without. Rib abnormalities (RAs) have been associated with childhood cancer; however, studies have differed in the type of RAs and cancers implicated.
METHODS: Rib abnormalities were assessed predominantly by X-ray in a hospital-based case-control study.
RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the number of cases vs controls with RAs after controlling for age and sex, specifically for acute myelogenous leukaemia, renal tumours, and hepatoblastoma.
CONCLUSION: The results of this study su

Defects of the thoracic cage with bone and/or muscle deficit are relatively rare and can present a real risk depending on the severity of manifestations. Cleft sternum results from failed midline fusion of the sternal halves that leaves the heart and great vessels unprotected, and is commonly associated with craniofacial hemangiomas. Correction is recommended during the neonatal period when compliant thorax allows direct suturing of the divided sternum. Sternal foramen requires precaution during biopsy and acupuncture as well as forensic awareness. In addition to the thoracic defect, Poland sy

Pectus carinatum, just like its sister deformity pectus excavatum, is a condition with an undefined developmental mechanism and debated surgical techniques. Elongation of the costal cartilages and elongation and anterior displacement of the sternum characterize the different varieties of pectus carinatum. Repair of the anomaly involves positional correction as well as the shortening of the sternum and the maintenance of its corrected position by action of the rectus abdominis and pectoralis muscles.
