BACKGROUND: Myiasis is the invasion of living tissue of humans and other mammals by eggs or maggots of flies of the order of Diptera. It occurs mainly in the Tropics and is associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene. Oral myiases in an older man appears to be rare.
OBJECTIVE: To relate a case of oral myiases in a debilitated older man treated by mechanical removal of the maggots, identifying the adult insect that caused the infestation.
METHODS: The diagnosis of oral myiasis was established by the clinical examination and it was detected that the infestation involved only soft ti…

Cutaneous myiasis in humans involving fly species endemic in Italy are uncommon and are not often present in the literature. In the present article we describe the case of cutaneous myiasis in a woman brought to the Emergency Department (ED) of the S. Croce e Carle General Hospital in Cuneo, northwest Italy. The patient was in precarious hygienic condition, and was suffering from localized ulcerated foot ulcers with significant inflammation extending up to the knee. Fly larvae, subsequently identified as Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826), were found in the lesions. The patient was admitted to th…

Aural myiasis is a rare otolaryngological disease typically seen in poor hygienic conditions and medically disabled patients. We present a case of aural myiasis in a healthy woman who had no apparent risk factors for infestation and required extensive surgical intervention. We also discuss the literature of documented otolaryngological cases of myiasis and effective therapies. In our patient, symptoms of otalgia, otorrhea, and tinnitus resolved after multiple attempts at extraction resulted in successful eradication of larvae. The patient required tympanoplasty to reconstruct the damaged exter…

Dipteran larvae were collected from wounds of 78 domestic animals. The larvae were identified as follows: Wohlfahrtia magnifica, taken from dogs (the majority), goats, sheep, camels, horses and one cat; Lucilia sericata, from cats, sheep, one horse, and one dog together with Chrysomya albiceps; Przhevalskiana silenus from goats and Musca domestica from one sheep. The animals were treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents and insecticides and most animals fully recovered. We believe this to be the first record of L. sericata and C. albiceps taken together from a dog. Likewise, the pres

Myiasis is defined as an occupational disease and it is mainly seen in people who are in contact with animals, in particular sheep. We detected nasal and external ophthalmomyiasis caused by Oestrus ovis in a 33-year-old male who worked as a research assistant in the faculty of agriculture. The presenting complaints were severe foreign body sensation and discharge in the nose, cough, and foreign body sensation in the right eye. Ophthalmologic examination revealed many moving larvae in the right eye of the patient. Larvae were removed and nasolacrimal duct irrigation was performed through the in…

Lipedema refers to the abnormal deposition of subcutaneous fat causing a striking enlargement of the lower extremities that is out of proportion to the upper body. Most clinicians are unaware of this disease and thus it is seldom diagnosed correctly. Cutaneous myiasis is the infestation of skin by fly larvae. We describe an unusual case of a woman with lipedema who developed cutaneous myiasis.

Myiasis is caused by infestation of the skin by the larvae of flies. This entity has specific epidemiological characteristics. Although it is highly unusual in our environment, imported cases can be found because of increased traveling and immigration. The usual clinical manifestations are subcutaneous abscesses, where the larvae develop. Differential diagnosis includes common disorders such as cellulitis and furunculosis, but knowledge of this entity makes diagnosis and treatment simple. We describe the life cycle of the human botfly and the typical clinical presentation and management of thi…

In Hungary, 4388 sheep in six flocks were surveyed in June-August of 1992-1995 to gather basic data on wound myiasis, its incidence, the predominant fly species involved and the clinical manifestations of infestation. The pathogenesis and economic significance of wound myiasis, as well as the interrelation of breed and sex with infestation levels, were evaluated. Active wound myiasis was recorded in all flocks, in 17.6% (774/4388) of the inspected sheep. The incidence varied among flocks and inspections from 4.7% to 38.9%, but it was significantly greater in imported breeds (28.8%, 651/2257) t…

Myiasis, the infestation of body tissues by the larvae of flies, occurs infrequently in Australian tourists who return from areas where certain species are endemic. Some of these insect species such as Cochliomyia hominivorax and Chrysoma bezziana (New and Old World screw-worms respectively) are responsible for significant disease in livestock as well as in humans. We report a patient who travelled extensively through South America and returned to Australia with a subcutaneous nodule containing a large larva of the species Dermatobia hominis. Because of the risk of travellers introducing unwan…

During a period of over 10 years 4 cases (2 women; 2 men) of rectal myiasis were observed after periods of warm weather. The patients had interpreted myiasis as a symptom of infestation with worms. In 3 cases maggots of Fannia canicularis (Linnaeus, 1761) and in one case maggots of Muscina stabulans (Fallén, 1816) could be found. The patients had only minor complaints.

A case of aural myiasis that involved Calliphora nociva in an 18-month-old boy is reported. This is thought to be its first documentation. Medical practitioners are encouraged to preserve entomological material from all cases of human myiasis so as to improve the knowledge of the species which are responsible for the condition in Australia.

A case of mixed infection of Salmonella (type C2) and Parasarcophaga crassipalpis (an intestinal myiasis) in a two-year-old girl is reported. A girl after dining in a restaurant developed typical Salmonella food-poisoning symptoms. Stool culture showed both Salmonella and fly larvae. This paper is to report a first case of this fly larvae infection and to review the recent trends of food-poisoning in Japan.
