Mitochondria transfer from early stages of erythroblasts to their macrophage niche via tunnelling nanotubes.

Adult erythropoiesis entails a series of well-coordinated events that produce mature red blood cells. One of such events is the mitochondria clearance that occurs cell-autonomously via autophagy-dependent mechanisms. Interestingly, recent studies have shown mitochondria transfer activities between various cell types. In the context of erythropoiesis, macrophages are known to interact closely with the early stages of erythroblasts to provide a specialized niche, termed erythroblastic islands (EBI). However, whether mitochondria transfer can occur in the EBI niche has not been explored. Here, we

Immune efficacy of carbon nanotubes recombinant subunit vaccine against largemouth bass ulcerative syndrome virus.

Largemouth bass ulcerative syndrome virus (LBUSV) is an important virus induce the mortality of largemouth bass (Micropterus Salmoides). In this study, we reported a single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) containing LBUSV major capsid protein (MCP) subunit vaccine (SWCNTs-MCP) which was evaluated for its protective effect on largemouth bass by immersion immunization. We found an elevation in serum antibody levels, enzyme activities, complement C3 content and immune-related genes (IgM, TGF-β, IL-1β, IL-8, TNF-α and CD4) expression, in the SWCNTs-MCP immunized groups compared with the pure MCP

Recovery of electro-mechanical properties inside self-healing composites through microencapsulation of carbon nanotubes.

We report the successful microencapsulation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes suspended in a 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (5E2N) self-healing monomer, into poly melamine urea formaldehyde shells through in situ polymerization. The average size of the microcapsules, their size-distribution, shell wall structural integrity and thickness are  characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The presence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) inside the core liquid content, as well as their release after breaking is confirmed by microscopy and spectroscopy analyses. A small amount of CNTs inside the mic

Airway Exposure to Modified Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes Perturbs Cardiovascular Adenosinergic Signaling in Mice.

The broad list of commercial applications for multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) can be further expanded with the addition of various surface chemistry modifications. For example, standard commercial grade MWCNT (C-grade) can be carboxylated (COOH) or nitrogen-doped (N-doped) to suite specific utilities. We previously reported dose-dependent expansions of cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, 24 h after intratracheal instillation of C-grade, COOH, or N-doped MWCNT in mice. Here, we have tested the hypothesis that airway exposure to MWCNT perturbs cardiovascular adenosinergic signaling,

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Augment Allergic Airway Eosinophilic Inflammation by Promoting Cysteinyl Leukotriene Production.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) have been reported to promote lung inflammation and fibrosis. The commercial demand for nanoparticle-based materials has expanded rapidly and as demand for nanomaterials grows, so does the urgency of establishing an appreciation of the degree of health risk associated with their increased production and exposure. In this study, we examined whether MWCNT inhalation elicited pulmonary eosinophilic inflammation and influenced the development of allergic airway inflammatory responses. Our data revealed that instillation of FA21 MWCNT into the airways of mice r

Electrochemical degradation of diclofenac using three-dimensional electrode reactor with multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

The electro-oxidation treatment of aqueous solution containing diclofenac (DCF) on a Ti/RuO2-TiO2 electrode in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was studied in a three-dimensional electrochemical (3DE) reactor. The response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) was utilized to determine the influence of different factors. The results revealed that the obtained polynomial experimental model had a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9762) based on analysis of variance. The optimum condition for the removal of DCF by the 3DE process was obtai

Renal-Clearable Hollow Bismuth Subcarbonate Nanotubes for Tumor Targeted Computed Tomography Imaging and Chemoradiotherapy.

Although metallic nanomaterials with high X-ray attenuation coefficients have been widely used as X-ray computed tomography (CT) contrast agents, their intrinsically poor biodegradability requires them to be cleared from the body to avoid any potential toxicity. On the other hand, extremely small-sized nanomaterials with outstanding renal clearance properties are not much effective for tumor targeting because of their too rapid clearance in vivo. To overcome this dilemma, here we report on the hollow bismuth subcarbonate nanotubes (BNTs) assembled from renal-clearable ultrasmall bismuth subcar

In vitro chromosomal aberrations induced by various shapes of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs).

OBJECTIVES: IARC has classified one type of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), MWNT-7, as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B); however, other types of MWCNT were categorized as not classifiable as to their carcinogenicity to humans (Group 3). In vitro chromosomal aberration assays of MWNT-7 showed polyploid formation but not structural abnormalities. This study investigated the influence of the shape and size of MWCNT on in vitro induction of chromosomal aberrations. METHODS: Microscopic analysis and viable cell counting were used to assay for chromosomal aberrations and cytotoxic

Tumor exosomes induce tunneling nanotubes in lipid raft-enriched regions of human mesothelioma cells.

Tunneling nanotubes (TnTs) are long, non-adherent, actin-based cellular extensions that act as conduits for transport of cellular cargo between connected cells. The mechanisms of nanotube formation and the effects of the tumor microenvironment and cellular signals on TnT formation are unknown. In the present study, we explored exosomes as potential mediators of TnT formation in mesothelioma and the potential relationship of lipid rafts to TnT formation. Mesothelioma cells co-cultured with exogenous mesothelioma-derived exosomes formed more TnTs than cells cultured without exosomes within 24-48

Enhanced photoluminescence from ordered arrays of cadmium sulfide nanotubes synthesized using nanoscale chemical reactors.

We report enhanced room temperature photoluminescence from ordered arrays of few micrometers long cadmium sulfide nanotubes fabricated using 'nanoscale chemical reactors' of porous alumina by a unique two-chamber synthesis without using any surfactants. Photoluminescence from these nanotubes is -20 times larger than that of nanocrystalline cadmium sulfide particles prepared by bulk mixing of the same reactants. However, we rule out any quantum size effect as a source of enhanced photoluminescence from these intentionally un-passivated nanotubes. We identify sulfur deficiency in these nanotubes

Membrane nanotubes between peritoneal mesothelial cells: functional connectivity and crucial participation during inflammatory reactions.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) has attained increased relevance as continuous renal replacement therapy over the past years. During this treatment, the peritoneum functions as dialysis membrane to eliminate diffusible waste products from the blood-stream. Success and efficacy of this treatment is dependent on the integrity of the peritoneal membrane. Chronic inflammatory conditions within the peritoneal cavity coincide with elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines leading to the impairment of tissue integrity. High glucose concentrations and glucose metabolites in PD solutions contribute to stru

Carbon nanotubes as vectors for gene therapy: past achievements, present challenges and future goals.

Promising therapeutic and prophylactic effects have been achieved following advances in the gene therapy research arena, giving birth to the new generation of disease-modifying therapeutics. The greatest challenge that gene therapy vectors still face is the ability to deliver sufficient genetic payloads in order to enable efficient gene transfer into target cells. A wide variety of viral and non-viral gene therapy vectors have been developed and explored over the past 10years, including carbon nanotubes. In this review we will address the application of carbon nanotubes as non-viral vectors in

Surface charge and cellular processing of covalently functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes determine pulmonary toxicity.

Functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) are being produced in increased volume because of the ease of dispersion and maintenance of the pristine material physicochemical properties when used in composite materials as well as for other commercial applications. However, the potential adverse effects of f-CNTs have not been quantitatively or systematically explored. In this study, we used a library of covalently functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs), established from the same starting material, to assess the impact of surface charge in a predictive toxicological model that relates

Synergistic photothermal ablative effects of functionalizing carbon nanotubes with a POSS-PCU nanocomposite polymer.

BACKGROUND: The application of nanotechnology in biology and medicine represents a significant paradigm shift in the approach to the treatment of cancer. Evidence suggests that when exposed to near-infrared radiation (NIR), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dissipate a substantial amount of heat energy. We have developed a novel nanocomposite polymer, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane poly (carbonate-urea) urethane (POSS-PCU). POSS-PCU displays excellent biocompatibility and has been used in making artificial organs as well as protective coatings for medical devices. RESULTS: Functionalizing (or "co

Photocatalytic oxidation of ammonia by cadmium sulfide/titanate nanotubes synthesised by microwave hydrothermal method.

CdS/Titanate nanotubes (TNTs) were successfully synthesised by a simple, rapid, and reliable microwave hydrothermal method. The CdS nanoparticles synthesised using a 140-W microwave irradiation power at 423 K photodegraded 26% ammonia in water, while the photocatalytic efficiency increased to 52.3% using the synthesised CdS/TNTs composites. The results indicated that the CdS/TNTs photocatalysts possess improved photocatalytic activity than that of CdS or TNTs materials alone.

Purity-enhanced bulk synthesis of thin single-wall carbon nanotubes using iron-copper catalysts.

We report high purity and high yield synthesis of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of narrow diameter from iron-copper bimetal catalysts. The SWCNTs with diameter of 0.8-1.2 nm are synthesized using the zeolite-supported alcohol chemical vapour deposition method. Single metal and bimetal catalysts are systematically investigated to achieve both the enhancement of SWCNT yield and the suppression of the undesired formation of graphitic impurities. The relative yield and purity of SWCNTs are quantified using optical absorption spectroscopy with an ultracentrifuge-based purification technique

Room temperature fabrication of single crystal nanotubes of CaSn(OH)6 through sonochemical precipitation.

CaSn(OH)(6) nanotubes were fabricated by sonochemical precipitation method at room temperature. A direct rolling process from nanosheets to nanotubes was expected for the synthesis of CaSn(OH)(6) nanotubes. The transient CaSn(OH)(6) nanosheets are formed as intermediates produced by the spontaneous self-assembly and transformation of amorphous colloid clusters. During the crystallization process of intermediate nanosheets, the relaxation of surface strain in the nanosheet interfaces can induce the nanosheets to roll up to form nanotubes under ultrasonic conditions. In this synthesis, the addit

Solubilization of single-walled carbon nanotubes by supramolecular complexes of barbituric acid and triaminopyrimidines.

In this letter, we report that single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can be dissolved in organic solvents through the formation of admixtures with barbituric acid.triaminopyrimidine (BA.TP) complexes using mechanochemical high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) and sonication methods. In contrast, neither BA nor TP alone were capable of solubilizing SWNTs. Moreover, the glutarimide (GI).TP complex was also found to be incapable of solubilizing SWNTs because the two carbonyl groups and one imino group of GI are located on only one side of the molecule such that the GI.TP complex cannot form the de

Rayleigh-instability-induced metal nanoparticle chains encapsulated in nanotubes produced by atomic layer deposition.

Cu nanoparticle chains encapsulated in Al2O3 nanotubes were successfully generated in a controlled manner by reduction of CuO nanowires embedded in Al2O3 at a sufficiently high temperature. The Al2O3 coating was deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The particles mainly show a rodlike shape and are regularly distributed. The particle diameters and chain lengths corresponding to the inner diameters and lengths of the tubes, respectively, are controlled by the size of the CuO nanowire templates. Rayleigh instability, assisted by the uniform volume shrinkage created by the reduction of oxid

Monolayer Films of Binary Metal Oxide Nanoparticles for Carbon Nanotube Synthesis.

Binary metal oxide nanoparticles (biMO-NPs) combining transition and main-group metals with well-organized atomic architectures have unique potential as robust and economical heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, metal oxide nanoparticles (CoAlxOy) using cobalt and aluminum were synthesized, and their structure, morphology, and chemical composition were investigated using various characterization techniques. The biMO-NPs, which had a Gaussian-type size distribution (∼6 nm), were assembled on plain silicon substrates modified chemically with linker molecules bearing suitable end groups. Surface anal
