Nasopharyngeal sialocele excision with an electrosurgical snare in a dog.

A 9-year-old female spayed Pug presented for marked obstructive apnoea and intermittent sneezing. On presentation, the dog had mild tachypnoea and increased inspiratory effort when sleeping. A nasopharyngeal mass was observed during the upper airway examination. On computed tomography scan, the nasopharyngeal characteristics and Hounsfield units were most consistent with a soft tissue mass. Endoscopic-guided electrosurgical snare cauterisation was performed. Procedure time was approximately 5 minutes. The discharge from the nasopharyngeal mass was submitted for cytology, and results were consi

Tissue-resident microbiota signature in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence reveals that microbiota plays a crucial role in multiple cancers. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) tissues harbour microbiota, highlighting the need to investigate the clinical implications of tissue-resident microbiota in the development of NPC. Here, we aim to clarify the specific profile of tissue-resident microbiota and its influence on NPC outcomes. RESULTS: This retrospective study included 491 NPC patients from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (Guangzhou, China) and the Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical College (Guilin, China). We profiled the microb

Recent advances in early detection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) arises from the mucosal epithelium of the nasopharynx and is frequently located in the pharyngeal crypts. This is a highly aggressive malignant tumor that frequently leads to distant metastases in many cases and poses a significant public health challenge, particularly in certain geographic regions globally. This review discusses the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment options for NPC, emphasizing the importance of early detection and comprehensive management strategies in improving patient outcomes. Moreover, the article explores the intricate m

Actinomycosis presenting as a nasopharyngeal mass: A case report.

Actinomycetes are predominantly pathogenic bacteria that lack aerial hyphae and do not form spores. They are generally anaerobic or facultative anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria, belonging to the prokaryotic group. Actinomycetes are widely distributed in nature, similar to other bacteria, and are mostly saprophytic, with a few being parasitic. They are named as such due to their colony's radial form. The symptoms and signs of actinomycosis are atypical and rarely manifest in the nasopharynx. Consequently, it can be challenging to distinguish actinomycosis from nasopharyngeal carcinoma, making d

[A case report of nasopharyngeal inflammatory myofibroblastoma in infant].

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal soft tissue tumor characterized by borderline or low-grade malignancy. It is rare childhood tumor with an average age of onset of 10 years old. It is even rarer in infants and toddlers, and the etiology and pathogenesis of this tumor are still unclear. The clinical presentation of IMT is non-specific and are related to the location of the tumor. When the tumor compresses adjacent organs, it can cause pain and functional impairment. According to the current literature, IMT is most commonly found in the digestive and respiratory syst

Nasopharyngeal Fibroangioma: Revisiting the "Other End" of the Spectrum.

Significance StatementNasopharyngeal angiofibroma rarely presents in post-adolescent and elderly men, either as the natural evolution of a pre-existing lesion or as a de novo skull-base tumor. As the lesion ages, its composition changes from vessel-predominant to stroma-predominant-the angiofibroma-fibroangioma spectrum. As a fibroangioma, it has restrained clinical features (asymptomatic or occasional epistaxis), minimal avidity for contrast agents, and limited spread potential evident on imaging. These atypical features lead to a diagnostic dilemma when an innocuous choanal/nasopharyngeal fi

COVID-19 nasopharyngeal swab and cribriform fracture.

Since the start of the pandemic, over 400 million COVID-19 swab tests have been conducted in the UK with a non-trivial number associated with skull base injury. Given the continuing use of nasopharyngeal swabs, further cases of swab-associated skull base injury are anticipated. We describe a 54-year-old woman presenting with persistent colourless nasal discharge for 2 weeks following a traumatic COVID-19 nasopharyngeal swab. A β2-transferrin test confirmed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhoea and a high-resolution sinus computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated a cribriform plate defect. Mag

A Case of Nasopharyngeal Myiasis Caused by Sarcophaga sp.

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation of tissues and body cavities of vertebrates by Diptera larvae. Nasal myiasis is mostly caused by the Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae families. Many predisposing factors play a role in the appearance of nasal myiasis. In the treatment of the disease, the use of antiseptics together with mechanical cleaning is recommended. In this report, a case of nasopharyngeal myiasis in a 75-year-old patient hospitalized in the intensive care unit is presented. Nine larvae were detected in the patient's nose. Larvae were removed from the area and were cleaned with iodine so

Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma: An Aberrant Case Report.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a very uncommon condition. We are presenting a case of a teenage boy with painless nasal blockage and fullness of bilateral ears for two to three months. On nasal endoscopy, a firm proliferative mass obstructing the right nasal cavity was noted. It was bleeding on touch. On contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses (CECT PNS), a diagnosis of the JNA was made based on the evidence of bony erosion and intense post-contrast enhancement. He was pre-operatively locally embolized followed by surgical resection. On follow-up, the pati

Characterization of the nasopharyngeal microbiome in patients with Kawasaki disease.

INTRODUCTION: The aetiology of Kawasaki disease (KD) remains unknown. Several studies have linked the human microbiome with some diseases. However, there are limited studies on the role of the respiratory microbiome in KD. The aim of our study was to make a more thorough analysis of the causes and processes that increase the susceptibility to KD. METHODS: Case-control study comparing the respiratory microbiome of KD patients with that of healthy children. The V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA bacterial gene and 16 respiratory viruses were analysed by real-time polimerase-chain reaction. We used th

Shoulder Metastasis: A Rare Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Presentation.

BACKGROUND Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignant tumor that arises from the mucosal lining epithelium of the nasopharynx, most commonly at the lateral nasopharyngeal recess or fossa of Rosenmüller. According to global age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs), in 2018 the incidence rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma varied from 2.1 to 0.4 per 100 000 in Asia and Europe, respectively. The number of deaths exceeded 50 000. It is one of the few head and neck tumors prone to distant metastasis, most commonly to bones, lung, and liver. CASE REPORT In this case report, we present a rare ca

Effect of GADD45G on the radioresistance of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells.

The development of radioresistance by nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells almost always results in tumor recurrence and metastasis, making clinical treatment of the disease difficult. In this study, the mechanism of radioresistance in NPC cells was investigated. First, a gene array and quantitative reverse-transcription-PCR assays were used to screen for genes exhibiting significantly altered expression in the DNA damage signaling pathway. Based on those results, GADD45G was further studied in the context of radioresistance. A GADD45G-knockout NPC cell line (CNE-2R-KO) was constructed using C
