Breast carcinoma survival analysis for African American and white women in an equal-access health care system.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective review of breast carcinoma cases in the Department of Defense (DoD) Central Tumor Registry evaluated differences in survival patterns between African American and white women treated in U.S. military health care facilities. The study examined the effects of age, stage of cancer, tumor size, grade, lymph node involvement, waiting time between diagnosis and first treatment, marital status, military dependent status, alcohol usage, tobacco usage, and family history of cancer. METHODS: Researchers reviewed the tumor registry records of 6577 women (5879 whites and 69

A Bayesian network and heuristic approach for systematic characterization of radiotherapy receipt after breast-conservation surgery.

BACKGROUND: Breast-conservation surgery with radiotherapy is a treatment highly recommended by the guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. However, several variables influence the final receipt of radiotherapy and it might not be administered to breast cancer patients. Our objective is to propose a systematic framework to identify the clinical and non-clinical variables that influence the receipt of unexpected radiotherapy treatment by means of Bayesian networks and a proposed heuristic approach. METHODS: We used cancer registry data of Detroit, San Francisco-Oakland, and A

Breast cancer incidence, stage distribution, and treatment shifts during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide population-level study.

BACKGROUND: The first COVID-19 wave in 2020 necessitated temporary suspension of non-essential medical services including organized cancer screening programs in Belgium. This study assessed the impact of the pandemic on breast cancer (BC) incidence, stage at diagnosis, and management in Belgium in 2020. METHODS: All Belgian residents diagnosed with in situ or invasive BC in 2015-2020 in the nationwide, population-based cancer registry database were included. Incidence trends for 2015-2019 were extrapolated to predict incidence and stage distribution for 2020 and compared with the observed val

FHIR Standard-Based Oncology Data Model for Cancer Screening: Design and Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. Early detection through screening, diagnosis, and effective management can reduce cancer mortality. Risk assessment is crucial for improving outcomes by identifying high-risk individuals based on family history, genetics, lifestyle, and environment. Such targeted screening enhances accuracy and resource efficiency. However, the complex nature of oncology data-which includes clinical observations, lab results, radiology images, treatment regimens, and genetic information-presents significant challenges for data interoperability and excha

Evaluation of genetic studies on camels in Saudi Arabia: traits, tools, and applications.

In Saudi Arabia, the dromedary camel (Arabian camel) has enormous cultural, economic, and ecological importance. Nevertheless, camel genetic studies and breeding have lagged behind those of other livestock species in the past. This review summarizes findings from recent research on the genetic diversity, population structure, and functional traits of Saudi Arabian camels. It presents the application of molecular technologies, including microsatellite markers, mitochondrial DNA, whole-genome sequencing, and multi-omics approaches, in studying camel phenotypes such as milk yield, growth rate, an

Incidence of cutaneous melanoma in Western Sweden, 1970-2007.

The aim of this study was to describe the increasing incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) in Western Sweden during the period 1970-2007. A secondary aim was to show a geographical variation in incidence between coastal and inland areas, considering the effects of the local average duration of sunshine, and the sun exposure-related behavior in the populations. The Swedish Cancer Registry provided data on invasive melanomas during 1970-2007. Meteorological maps showed the annual average duration of sunshine during 1961-1990. A survey from 2007 with 2871 participants, carried out by th

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on diagnosis, stage, and initial treatment of breast cancer in the Netherlands: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Dutch national screening program to a halt and increased the burden on health care services, necessitating the introduction of specific breast cancer treatment recommendations from week 12 of 2020. We aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the diagnosis, stage and initial treatment of breast cancer. METHODS: Women included in the Netherlands Cancer Registry and diagnosed during four periods in weeks 2-17 of 2020 were compared with reference data from 2018/2019 (averaged). Weekly incidence was calculated by age group and tumor s

Incidence rates of soft tissue sarcoma among U.S. military servicemen: Comparison with the rates in the general U.S. population.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers among men younger than age 30 years and a leading cause of cancer death in men younger than age 40 years. The military may be more exposed to STS risk factors and have generally better health and health care access than the general population, which may relate to lower cancer risk and/or early detection. This study compared STS incidence between servicemen and men in the general U.S. METHODS: Data were from the Department of Defense's Automated Central Tumor Registry (ACTUR) and the National Cancer Institute

Geographic distribution and risk of upper urothelial carcinomas in Croatia, 2001-2011.

BACKGROUND: Strong associations exist between Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) and upper urothelial carcinomas (UUCs). However, the common etiology between the two remains unclear and there are no studies to date that visualize UUC risks in Croatia. In Croatia, 14 villages in the southwestern part of Brod-Posavina County are considered endemic for BEN. The aim of this ecological study is to map cancer risks and describe the case distribution of UUCs in Croatia at the county level during 2001-2011. METHODS: A total of 608 incident cases from the Croatian National Cancer Registry were identifie

Benzodiazepines interfere with the efficacy of pembrolizumab-based cancer immunotherapy. Results of a nationwide cohort study including over 50,000 participants with advanced lung cancer.

We previously reported that elevated levels of diazepam binding inhibitor (DBI), also called 'endozepine' because it acts as an endogenous benzodiazepine equivalent on the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor, constitutes a potential risk factor for the diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Antibody-mediated neutralization of DBI improved the immunosurveillance of NSCLC in preclinical models with and without immunotherapy targeting programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1). A pilot study in a small French-Canadian cohort (n = 205) suggested that benzodiazepine (BZD) use correlates w

Early effects of HPV vaccination on high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in Brazil: Evidence from outpatient data.

Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of disease burden among women, despite being largely preventable. High-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is a key intermediate outcome for evaluating early population-level effects of HPV vaccination and is mainly managed in outpatient settings, which may provide a more timely signal than hospitalizations or cancer registry data. This study aimed to assess whether the introduction of quadrivalent HPV vaccination in Brazil in 2014 through its National Immunization Program was associated with changes in first outpatient consultations for high-

Simulation Modeling of Oral Cancer Development with Risk Stratification: How Potential Screening Programs Can Be Evaluated.

UNLABELLED: Background. A barrier to early-stage oral cavity cancer detection is the lack of a defined population and screening regimen satisfying risk-benefit considerations. Methods. We constructed a microsimulation model, Simulation of Cancers of the Oral cavity and Risk Exposures (SCORE), that incorporates risk profiles defined by smoking and alcohol exposure. SCORE simulates the development and progression of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) representing benign, dysplastic, or malignant lesions in the US population starting at age 40 y. OPMD high-risk characteristics of maligna

Risk of breast cancer among young women: relationship to induced abortion.

BACKGROUND: Certain events of reproductive life, especially completed pregnancies, have been found to influence a woman's risk of breast cancer. Prior studies of the relationship between breast cancer and a history of incomplete pregnancies have provided inconsistent results. Most of these studies included women beyond the early part of their reproductive years at the time induced abortion became legal in the United States. PURPOSE: We conducted a case-control study of breast cancer in young women born recently enough so that some or most of their reproductive years were after the legalizatio

Cost-Effectiveness of Universal Low-Dose Computed Tomographic Lung Cancer Screening in Singapore.

IMPORTANCE: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Singapore, with approximately 48% of cases occurring in individuals who have never smoked (never smokers) and 82% diagnosed at late stages (stage III or IV). Current screening guidelines exclude never smokers entirely. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening including never smokers is cost-effective in Singapore and to identify the minimum risk model performance for targeted never smoker screening. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This economic evaluation from the perspective o
