OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlative factors on recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injuries caused by ultrasonically activated shears (UAS).
METHOD: Fifteen New Zealand rabbits (thirty recurrent laryngeal nerves) were randomly divided into 5 groups: group 1 and group 2 are those UAS works 1 mm away from RLN for 2 s and 4s separately, group 3 and group 4 are those UAS works 3 mm away from RLN for 2 s and 4 s separately, and the other one is control group. Electrophysiology was detected in each group. The RLN injuries of group 2, 3 and control group were observed with electron microscope.

A series of 16 experiments, using a total of 2,000 BD6 rats, was designed in order to assess the ability of 8 individual agents or their combinations to modulate the liver and oesophageal carcinogenesis induced by multiple doses of diethylnitrosamine (DEN). Of the antioxidants tested, sodium selenite, ascorbic acid, and butylated hydroxytoluene generally exhibited protective effects on both types of tumors. Collagen glucosyltransferase activity (EC 2.4.1.66) was quantified in experimentally-induced liver carcinoma, murine schistosomiasis mansoni-induced liver fibrosis and compared to the level of enzyme activity in control liver samples. The potential carcinogenic activity of 5,6-dimethoxysterigmatocystin (DMSC) was examined by oral administration in rats. In Experiment I, all of eight effective ACI/N rats given DMSC in the diet at a concentration of 50 p.p.m. developed neoplastic nodules of the liver. Five rats developed hepatocellular carcinomas and four rats had hemangioendothelial sarcomas of the liver. Two other rats developed osteosarcomas. Enzootic nasal adenocarcinoma (ENA) is a contagious neoplasm of the secretory epithelial cells of the nasal mucosa of sheep and goats. It is associated with the betaretrovirus, enzootic nasal tumor virus (ENTV), but a causative relationship has yet to be demonstrated. In this study, 14-day-old lambs were experimentally infected via nebulization with cell-free tumor filtrates derived from naturally occurring cases of ENA. Mice lacking the Gadd45a gene are susceptible to ionizing radiation-induced tumors. Increased levels of Gadd45a transcript and protein are seen after treatment of cells with ionizing radiation as well as many other agents and treatments that damage DNA. Because cells deficient in Gadd45a were shown to have a partial defect in the global genomic repair component of the nucleotide excision repair pathway of UV-induced photoproducts, dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) carcinogenesis was investigated because this agent produces bulky adducts in DNA that are also repaired by nucleotide excision repair.

We investigated whether there is a relationship between the production of eicosanoids by murine solid tumors and their response to the prostaglandin H (PGH) synthase inhibitor indomethacin. Three sarcomas, designated FSA, NFSA, and SA-NH, and two carcinomas, designated MCA-K and HCA-I, syngeneic to C3Hf/Kam mice were used. In general, FSA and NFSA produced more PGH synthase products than lipoxygenase products, whereas HCA-I produced both types of metabolites in large quantities. A cDNA library made from poly(A)+ RNA of a rat ascites hepatoma cell line, AH60C, was screened with respect to transcribed repetitive sequences by probing with AH60C genomic DNA. Thirty clones, comprising 1.2% of the library, were found to contain repetitive elements. The cytotoxicity of 2 rifamycin derivatives, rifazone-82 and rifampicin, on mouse ascites cells was studied, using the [125I]iododeoxyuridine (IUDR) method of labeling the tumor cells. This technique allows a distinction to be made between a cytocidal and cytostatic effect. The 2 drugs exerted a cytocidal effect against 2 non-leukemic cell lines, but had no effect against 3 leukemic lines.

This work presents data concerning the effect of tumor excision accompanied or not by the removal of the regional lymph node (RLN) on the survival time of mice bearing the EAkR lymphosarcoma or the B16 melanoma. The operations were performed at various times to study this effect in relation to tumor volume. Early tumorectomy, on day 6 for the EAkR lymphosarcoma, on day 10 for the B16 melanoma, prolonged significantly the survival time. The additional removal of the RLN abolished this beneficial effect. Hydantoin derivatives of varying lipophilic character were prepared as nitrogen mustard carriers for CNS antitumor evaluation. Activity was studied in the murine ependymoblastoma brain tumor system. Multiple cures were observed for three of the four analogs examined. The compounds were also active in the intraperitoneal leukemia L1210 and P388 systems as well as in B16 melanoma and Lewis lung carcinoma.
