Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a slow-growing, expansive, and benign fibro-osseous neoplasm that is rare in cattle. It mainly affects the craniofacial bones, especially the mandible. Here, we report 2 cases of mandibular OF in Nelore and mixed-breed steers with enlarged masses in the rostral portion of the mandible. Radiographic analysis of case 1 revealed an oval, lobed mass with the radiopacity of bone tissue that displaced the incisors laterodorsally. Histologically, both masses were composed of a proliferation of spindloid-to-stellate cells, supported by a dense fibrovascular stroma, with bony

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a distinctive, relatively uncommon soft-tissue neoplasm that usually arises from the pleura. It occurs at various sites; head and neck lesions are very rare. While most of these tumors have a benign course, a small number have malignant potential. We describe a rare case of SFT arising from the left palatine tonsil in a 66-year-old Japanese woman. The mass was completely resected. Immunohistochemical studies were strongly positive for CD34 and bcl-2, mildly positive for phosphorylated protein kinase B and phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2,

A case of a 53-year-old woman with the epithelioid variant of mammary myofibroblastoma, which was initially misinterpreted as invasive lobular carcinoma, is presented. A needle core biopsy of the 1.6 cm mass showed interlacing bundles of epithelioid myofibroblasts amid dense fibrous tissue associated with lobular carcinoma in situ of the classical type. Most epithelioid cells showed nuclear atypia, and a few exhibited signet-ring cytology. Immunoreactivity for estrogen and progesterone receptors further compounded the deception, and the neoplasm was misinterpreted as invasive lobular carcinoma

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare malignant neoplasm that histologically resembles thymic carcinoma and arises in the thyroid gland or adjacent soft tissue of the neck. Herein is reported the case of a 62-year-old male patient with CASTLE exhibiting neuroendocrine differentiation, who was treated with total pharyngolaryngo-esophagectomy and total thyroidectomy. Gross examination of the surgical specimen showed a grayish-white, solid, lobulated tumor, mainly located between the trachea and esophagus, and involving the lower part of the left thyroid lobe. Histologi

BACKGROUND: Extracardiac rhabdomyomas are rare benign tumors of the head and neck. They are frequently misdiagnosed and possibly overtreated when confused with other aggressive tumors.
METHODS: This article reports on the clinicopathologic features of two such tumors affecting adult patients and initially seen as slowly-growing, indolent neoplasms.
RESULTS: The tumors were of fibrous consistency, mobile, with well-demarcated borders and evident lines of cleavage. Both patients were treated by conservative surgery and remained disease-free after prolonged clinical observation. Histologically,

Chronic traumatic thoracic aneurysm is considered to be an uncommon disease. A case of 59-year-old man who had a history of blunt chest trauma with a traffic accident thirty years ago is reported. He has no symptoms and no signs since the accident. The roentogenogram of his chest showed widening of upper mediastinum, but aortography did not reveal the aneurysmal dilatation of the aortic arch. CT and MRI study showed an inhomogenous mediastinal tumor simulating neoplasm neighboring the aortic arch. At surgery, it was found to be a thoracic semispherical pseudo-aneurysm (thrombotic closure type)

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors are rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. They are often of low malignant potential and rarely metastasize. While they frequently arise from the pleura, they can occur at any soft tissue site in the body. We present a case of a large (28 × 21 cm) malignant solitary fibrous tumor arising from the bladder serosa. In addition, the clinicopathologic features, differential diagnosis, cytogenetics and management of this rare disease are discussed, along with a review of the existing literature on this topic.
CASE PRESENTATION: An otherwise healthy 41-year-old C

Uterine fibroids (UFs) (leiomyomas or myomas) are the most common clonal neoplasms of the uterus in women of reproductive age worldwide. UFs originate from myometrium consist of smooth muscle and fibroblast components, in addition to a substantial amount of fibrous extracellular matrix which all contribute to the pathogenetic process. Current treatments are primarily limited to surgical and interventional. Here, we have established a novel and promising organoid model from both normal and patient myometrial stem cells (MMSCs). MMSCs embedded in Matrigel in stem cell media swiftly formed organo

An 8-year-old, female domestic shorthair cat was presented with a ventral abdominal subcutaneous mass. A radiograph showed that the center of the mass contained what appeared to be steel sutures, presumed to be from an ovariohysterectomy performed 7 years earlier. The excised mass was irregular and contained numerous pockets filled with friable necrotic material and hemorrhages that were dissected by fibrous connective tissue bands. Multiple tangled and fragmented pieces of steel staples were deeply embedded within the mass. Histologically, the mass was non-encapsulated, densely cellular, and

Cutaneous sarcomas and sarcoma-like lesions pose special problems for pathologists. These lesions manifest a great deal of clinical and histological overlap, and they may be virtually impossible to separate from one another on conventional microscopy. Spindle-cell squamous carcinoma (SCSC), sarcomatoid malignant melanoma (SCMM), and fibrohistiocytic tumors, such as "atypical fibroxanthoma" (AFX) and superficial malignant fibrous histiocytoma (SMFH), comprise the group of neoplasms in this category that pose the greatest diagnostic difficulty. All may or may not show attachments between dermal

INTRODUCTION: Meningeal solitary fibrous tumour is a relatively recent pathological entity that has rarely been described in children. With radiological techniques, it cannot be distinguished from meningiomas, and the diagnosis has to be confirmed histologically.
CASE REPORT: We discuss the possible histogenesis of this tumour and the need for recognizing this lesion as a separate entity. We report the case of a 12-year-old boy who developed a meningeal solitary fibrous tumour; the main clinical symptoms were progressive headaches for a long period and recent transient hemiparesis.

Osteomas are benign mature bone tumors that typically arise in the skull. Osteomas larger than 3 cm in diameter are considered giant osteomas. Giant osteomas of the skull vault are very rare, especially in children; therefore, only a few cases have been reported in the literature. Although osteomas are usually asymptomatic, a large skull mass can cause headache, as well as esthetic disfigurement of the forehead. it can be misdiagnosed as other conditions, such as fibrous dysplasia, ossifying cephalhematoma, or other malignant bone tumors. Herein, the authors report 2 rare pediatric cases of gi

The patient was a 49-year-old man with persistent fever since the introduction of hemodialysis(HD). Vomiting and abdominal swelling appeared 4 months after initiating hemodialysis. Computed tomography(CT)scan revealed a tumor measuring 9 cm, and disorders of passage from the jejunum. Surgery was performed, and resection was impossible because of peritoneal dissemination. Histopathological examination of the disseminated nodes suggested an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. Postoperatively, drainage from the gastric fistula was approximately 2,000mL/day. Chemotherapy was considered impossibl

A 48-year-old man with the nonfamilial form of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) developed a malignant fibrous histiocytoma in the deep soft tissue of the calf. Following excision and local radiotherapy, the tumor did not recur. At age 59, due to rectal bleeding, a polypoid malignant melanoma of the anal canal was detected and resected. One year later a local recurrence was removed, a pelvic mass was seen on computed tomography, and the patient died. The malignant melanoma was amelanotic and negative for HMB-45 (a melanoma-specific antibody), and the recurrent tumor showed areas of desmoplasia a

We report a case of a 62-year-old female with a prior thoracotomy for solitary fibrous tumor of the diaphragmatic pleura. There was no clear evidence of malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP). In the 19th postoperative month, she had a disseminated recurrence of SFTP in the left thoracic cavity. There was no evidence of metastasis from medical imaging. Accordingly, a left extrapleural pneumonectomy was performed. Pathological examination revealed a disseminated recurrence of malignant SFTP, showing a higher grade of malignancy, because the resected specimen was identical to the

Rhabdomyosarcomas (RBMs) are rare neoplasms arising from striated muscle tissues in domestic animals and are exceptionally uncommon, affecting the heart of domestic cats. A case of cardiac embryonal RBM was detected in a two-year-old female domestic shorthair cat. The cat exhibited dyspnea, anorexia, pericardial and pleural effusions, ultimately succumbing to severe respiratory arrest. Gross post-mortem examination revealed a firm yellow-tan mass measuring 2.5 × 1.5 cm protruding from the right atrium, along with metastatic nodules of various sizes dispersed throughout the liver, spleen, and l

Primary giant cell tumors (GCTs) of soft tissue resembling osseous GCTs are uncommon but distinct entities. Malignant GCTs of soft tissue have been designated giant cell malignant fibrous histiocytomas; however, there is scant data regarding benign GCTs of soft tissue. Eleven benign and seven malignant GCTs of soft tissue were identified from the authors' consultation files and the surgical pathology files of the Vancouver General Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. The tumors occurred in adults (eight men, 10 women; age range, 25-89 years; mean age, 54 years) in the extremities (n =
