Not always 'squame': The rare entity of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the tonsil presenting with cervical nodal metastases.

Although squamous cell carcinoma accounts for the overwhelming majority of head and neck malignant neoplasms, extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) of the pharyngeal region can have a similar clinical presentation. The histopathological features of this rare entity have been described and emphasised in the literature. We present the case of a 65-year-old male patient with FDCS of the tonsil to illustrate the radiologic findings of FDCS and also highlight this infrequent but salient differential diagnosis for adult head and neck neoplasia.

Case for diagnosis.

Marjolin's ulcer is a term used to describe a malignant transformation that originates in chronic skin lesions. These neoplasms may be more aggressive than those unassociated with healing processes and are frequently overlooked or inadequately treated. This case report describes the occurrence of a squamous cell carcinoma occurring at the site of a burn scar and emphasizes the need for early diagnosis and treatment in order to assure better prognosis.

Synchronous multifocal HPV-related neoplasm involving both the genital tract and the head-and-neck area: a case report of Fanconi anemia.

We report the case of a 32-year-old woman who presented with multiple squamous cell neoplasms synchronously arising in the cervix, vulva, oral cavity and oropharynx. During the period when the patient was treated by radiotherapy, she developed severe radiation mucositis and pancytopenia. Immunofluorescence staining for foci of the monoubiquitinated form of FANCD2 revealed a complete absence of such foci in all cancer tissues that were examined.

Primary Biliary Mixed Adenoneuroendocrine Carcinoma (MANEC): A Short Review.

Mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinomas (MANECs) are composite neoplasms with areas of adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma intermingled with neuroendocrine carcinoma or neuroendocrine tumor, each composing at least 30% of the neoplasm. MANECs are very infrequent overall, and they are more commonly diagnosed in the appendix, colon, and stomach. Biliary MANECs are particularly rare, and their histogenesis is debated because neuroendocrine cells are seldom identified in the normal biliary tract. They can show one of the 3 different architectural patterns described in Lewin's original classific

Causal role of immune cells on cervical cancer onset revealed by two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Cervical cancer (CC) is a prevalent gynecological cancer worldwide that significantly impacts the quality of life and the physical and mental well-being of women. However, there have been limited studies utilizing Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the connection between immune cells and CC. This study is to investigate the causal effects of immune traits on CC and non-neoplastic conditions of the cervix. The GWAS data for 731 immunophenotypes and six GWAS data for CC from the FinnGen database were downloaded. Subsequently, a two-sample MR analysis was conducted using the MR

Squamous-cell carcinoma of the colon responsive to combination chemotherapy: report of two cases and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: The majority of colorectal neoplasms diagnosed are adenocarcinomas. Other histologies such as squamous, adenosquamous, carcinoid tumors, or lymphoid tumors are occasionally identified. Given the rarity of squamous-cell tumors, it is very difficult to study their natural course and response to therapy. An attempt is made to describe the frequency, anatomic location, and response to therapy with a review of the literature. METHODS: From the Cancer Registry at the University of Missouri-Columbia Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, tumors of the colon identified above the dentate line were sele

Analysis of lymphoepithelioma and lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas for Epstein-Barr viral genomes by in situ hybridization.

Lymphoepithelioma of the nasopharynx has a strong association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). To test the hypothesis that lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas occurring at other sites are also associated with EBV virus, we used in situ hybridization to analyze 20 cases of lymphoepithelioma and histologically similar lesions and five basaloid squamous cell carcinomas for evidence of EBV genomes. EBV genomes were demonstrated in six of six lymphoepitheliomas of the nasopharynx but in none of five basaloid squamous cell carcinoma. Only one of 14 lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas was found to contain

Anal Cancer with Atypical Brain and Cranial Bones Metastasis: About 2 Cases and Literature Review.

Canal anal cancer is a rare tumor that accounts for 2% of all colorectal neoplasms, with a low propensity for metastasis. The spread of anal squamous cell carcinoma to the brain is exceedingly rare and has been previously reported only 5 times in the medical literature. However, the first and only case of cranial bone metastasis from anal canal carcinoma was described in 2019. The purpose of this article is to add our cases to the limited literature for the management of metastatic anal cancer. The current study presents 2 cases of patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the anal ca

Detection and localization of human papillomavirus in penile condylomas and squamous cell carcinomas using in situ hybridization with biotinylated DNA viral probes.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been previously demonstrated in male genital neoplasms using Southern blot hybridization (SBH) and in situ hybridization with radiolabeled probes (ISH-R). In this study we used in situ hybridization with biotinylated DNA viral probes (ISH-B), a technique that can be applied to routinely collected and processed tissue. Thirty cases of exophytic penile condyloma acuminatum and nine cases of invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the penis were examined for the presence of HPV using ISH-B for HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 33. HPV DNA was found in 25 of 30 (83%) peni

NTP Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Dimethyl Hydrogen Phosphite (CAS No. 868-85-9) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Gavage Studies).

Dimethyl hydrogen phosphite (DMHP) is used as an intermediate in the production of insecticides and herbicides, as an additive to lubricants, and as a stabilizer in oil and plaster and was considered for use as a chemical to simulate the physical (but not the biologic) properties of anticholinesterase agents. Results of 13-week gavage studies in F344/N rats (0-400 mg DMHP/kg body weight) and in B6C3F1 mice (0-1,500 mg DMHP/kg body weight) were used to identify short-term toxicity and to establish doses for the 2-year toxicology and carcinogenesis studies. In these studies, dimethyl hydrogen ph

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the renal pelvis is rare because SCC represents only 0.5% to 0.8% of malignant renal tumors. Chronic irritation, inflammation, and infection induce squamous metaplasia of the renal collecting system, which may progress to dysplasia and carcinoma in most of affected individuals. Nephrolithiasis, especially formation of staghorn calculi, is the most common risk factor for SCC, which usually occurs in older adults (age 50-70 years) with no sex predilection. Clinical features include flank or abdominal mass, weight loss, hematuria, or paraneoplastic syndrom

Rare coexistence of keratinizing squamous metaplasia with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis. Report of a case with the role of immunocytochemistry in the differential diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XPN), a rare form ofchronicpyelonephritis, is commonly associated with lithiasis and rarely leads to keratinizing squamous metaplasia. Its manifestations closely mimic those of a renal neoplasm, leading to misdiagnosis of malignancy, often resulting in radical nephrectomy. The role of immunocytochemistry in the preoperative cytologic diagnosis is assessed in the present case report. CASE: A 20-year-old male presented with fever and an enlarging mass in the right renal angle. Ultrasonography revealed a heterogeneous mass in the renal pelvis. Fine

Expression of epithelial growth factor receptor and its two ligands, transforming growth factor-alpha and epithelial growth factor, in normal and neoplastic squamous cells in the vulva: an immunohistochemical study.

Epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) sends signals to the proliferation signal transduction system, receiving two ligands: epithelial growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha). This immunohistochemical study examined the roles of EGFR and its ligands in the proliferation of normal and neoplastic vulvar squamous cells in 25 patients with vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC), 10 patients with vulvar condyloma acuminata (VCA), 15 patients with vulvar intra-epithelial neoplasm I-II or III (VIN I-II or III), and 5 subjects with vulvar normal squamous cells (VNSC). Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid gland: the importance of correct histological diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid is an uncommon, aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. The diagnosis is made after excluding metastasis from other sites in the head and neck or other primary malignancies of the parotid. METHODS: Tumor registry data from 1974 to 1994 were reviewed at three University of Louisville-affiliated hospitals. Of 370 parotid tumors, 40 (11%) were initially classified as squamous cell carcinoma of the parotid. Chart review and histological specimen re-examination were conducted to confirm diagnosis. RESULTS: Only 8 (2%) of the 370 case

Immunohistochemical expression of E-cadherin and Bcl-2 in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The most frequent malignancy of the oral cavity is oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which accounts for up to 80-90% of all malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity. It results from the gradual accumulation of diverse genetic alterations. Alcohol use, tobacco use, betel quid chewing, human papillomavirus (HPV) and poor nutrition are significant risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The cancer suppressor gene E-cadherin establishes a cutoff for Wnt-catenin signaling. Cell-cell adhesion is lost as a result of the Wnt signaling pathway being amplified when E-Cadherin
