Infundibulum of Accessory Anterior Cerebral Artery: Rare, Likely Benign Malformation of Anterior Communicating Artery Complex to Keep in Mind.

BACKGROUND: Infundibular dilations (IDs) are funnel-shaped enlargements located at the origin of cerebral arteries. Neuroradiologists and neurosurgeons are familiar with IDs of the posterior communicating artery, which are relatively common. Other locations, being unexpected sites of IDs, can pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE DESCRIPTION: In this paper, we describe a case of infundibulum of the accessory anterior cerebral artery, diagnosed with 3-dimensional reconstructions of computed tomography angiography, which is to our knowledge the first report of an ID of this anatomic …

Robert W. Williams: Forgotten Pioneer of Spinal Мicrosurgery.

UNLABELLED: In the 1970's many neurosurgeons gradually adapted microsurgical techniques to spine surgery as the benefits of magnification, illumination, and use of fine instruments in cranial surgery became apparent. In the early 1970 s, Robert W. Williams, а neurosurgeon in private practice in Las Vegas, Nevada, independently began to devise spinal microneurosurgical techniques with the goal of improving surgical outcome in lumbar and cervical surgery. Much of his initial work with microlumbar discectomies and microcervical foraminotomies was presented at annual meetings of the American Assoc…

Neurosurgical considerations in thoracic outlet syndrome.

The neurosurgeon is often consulted in cases of shoulder-arm pain that have as their cause compression of the neurovascular bundle in the thoracic outlet. He or she should, therefore, be familiar with the clinical presentation and differential diagnosis of this syndrome, as well as the electrographic and angiographic findings that may be present in this condition. If the diagnosis is established and the patient proves refractory to conservative treatment with physical therapy, medication, exercises, and modification of activities, the neurosurgeon may elect to perform scalenotomy, paying parti

Surviving the Big One: Turkish Neurosurgical Society's Innovative Disaster Management Model for Istanbul Earthquake.

The Turkish Neurosurgical Society (TNS) played a pivotal role in providing critical medical support during the Kahramanmaraş earthquake. Recognizing the urgent need for neurosurgeons, our team collaborated with various institutions to address material shortages and meet medical requirements. However, this experience underscored the necessity of having a comprehensive disaster organization model and a well-defined disaster management plan. TNS should pioneer the creation of a dedicated trauma group to ensure coordination among neurosurgeons in future disasters. Minimize confusion during critica…

Methods and Principles of the Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring in Neurosurgery.

Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) is an innovation introduced in neurosurgery in the past decades. It aims to support and guide the neurosurgeon to obtain the best surgical result possible, preventing the occurrence of neurological deficits. The somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) assess the integrity of the sensory pathways monitoring the dorsal column-medial lemniscus pathway during spine and cerebral surgery. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) provide information on the integrity of the motor pathway monitoring the efferent motor pathways from the motor cortex to the muscle t
