Personality mediates the association between juvenile conduct problems and adulthood mood disorders.

This study aimed to examine the association between conduct problems and mood disorders, and to evaluate the mediating roles of personality traits in it. Adult participants (N = 309), for which patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD), and controls without major psychiatric history were recruited. Juvenile conduct problem was defined by the items in Composite International Diagnosis Interview. We assessed personality traits of extraversion and neuroticism. Multiple mediation model was performed to investigate the intervening effect of personality traits between ju

Diet quality, stress and common mental health problems: A cohort study of 121,008 adults.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Overall diet quality may partially mediate the detrimental effects of stress and neuroticism on common mental health problems: stressed and/or neurotic individuals may be more prone to unhealthy dietary habits, which in turn may contribute to depression and anxiety. Lifestyle interventions for depressed, anxious or at-risk individuals hinge on this idea, but evidence to support such pathway is missing. Here, we aim to prospectively evaluate the role of overall diet quality in common pathways to developing depression and anxiety. METHODS: At baseline, N = 121,008 individuals

Experiential acceptance and trait-mindfulness as predictors of analogue post-traumatic stress.

OBJECTIVES: Experiential acceptance and trait-mindfulness are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after traumatic events. This study was a preliminary attempt to examine (1) associations of experiential acceptance and trait-mindfulness with post-traumatic stress (PTS) associated with negative, but not necessarily traumatizing, life events ('analogue' PTS), (2) the role of these variables in the context of neuroticism as well as worry and rumination - two other regulatory strategies associated with PTS, and (3) the impact of pre-trauma tendencies towards experiential acceptanc

Linking "big" personality traits to anxiety, depressive, and substance use disorders: a meta-analysis.

We performed a quantitative review of associations between the higher order personality traits in the Big Three and Big Five models (i.e., neuroticism, extraversion, disinhibition, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness) and specific depressive, anxiety, and substance use disorders (SUD) in adults. This approach resulted in 66 meta-analyses. The review included 175 studies published from 1980 to 2007, which yielded 851 effect sizes. For a given analysis, the number of studies ranged from three to 63 (total sample size ranged from 1,076 to 75,229). All diagnostic groups were high on neu

Restless Legs Syndrome and the five-factor model of personality: results from a community sample.

OBJECTIVE: To examine personality characteristics as potential mediators of the association between Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) and psychiatric disorders. METHOD: Revised NEO Personality Inventory traits are compared in respondents with (n=42) versus without (n=982) a diagnosis of RLS in a general population sample. RESULTS: RLS was associated with higher neuroticism after adjusting for potential confounders, including current psychopathology. Further analysis showed that the association between RLS and neuroticism contributes to, but does not fully explain, the relationship between RLS and

Personality Traits and Risk of Eating Disorders in Men: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Eating disorders (EDs) have been understudied and misunderstood in men. Among the relevant factors in the risk, onset, and maintenance of EDs, personality stands out. Therefore, the aim of the study was to analyze the relationships between personality traits and risk variables for the development of EDs in men. A total of 443 male university students (mean = 22.16 years) who completed the Spanish versions of the Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3) and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) participated. Correlation analyses were performed, and in order to determine the predictive role of pers

Rumination in adolescents at risk for depression.

BACKGROUND: Identifying high-risk adolescents and understanding first onset of depression in adolescence are important steps in reducing depression morbidity. There is compelling evidence that the personality dimension neuroticism is a risk factor for depression, but the vulnerability mechanism is not yet understood. This study examined the association between a hypothesized psychological vulnerability factor (rumination) and depression in adolescents. METHODS: A behavioural high-risk design differentiated a sample of 326 adolescents (aged 14-18) as either at normal or high risk for depressio

Green mind, healthy mind: investigating nature's role in students' health-related quality of life in China.

BACKGROUND: Connectedness to nature is a psychological concept describing an individual's emotional and cognitive bond with the natural environment. The relationships between Big Five personality traits and environmental connectedness have emerged as a crucial area of study in understanding human well-being and behavior. AIM: This research seeks to understand the complex relationships between Extraversion and Neuroticism, connectedness to nature, and their subsequent impact on Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among Chinese college students through flourishing. METHOD: The sample for th

7-Tesla ultra-high field MRI of the parahippocampal cortex reveals evidence of common neurobiological mechanisms of major depressive disorder and neurotic personality traits.

The parahippocampal cortex (PHC) is a highly interconnected region within the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and is essential in memory, emotion and cognition. According to the cognitive model of depression, dysfunctions in these processes constitute the pathophysiological foundation of major depressive disorder (MDD). Research suggests that human personality, and neuroticism in particular, plays an important role in the development and disease progression of MDD. Furthermore, extensive neuroimaging evidence indicates that neuroticism and depression share overlapping structural and functional corr

Narcissistic personality disorder and emotion regulation in psychiatric inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Emotional regulation difficulties in those with narcissistic personality disorder can cause problematic social and occupational functioning and inhibit treatment. Identifying which aspects of emotion regulation difficulties narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) patients have can help inform treatment. Adult psychiatric inpatients (N = 108) were assessed on measures of emotion regulation. Propensity score matching (PSM) was utilized to match inpatients with a diagnosis of NPD (n = 54) to psychiatric peers on several criteria. An analysis of variance compared groups at admission an

[Personality and depression: A review of theory model and behavior and neural mechanism].

The analysis of the relationship between personality and depression can facilitate the development of subclinical preventive measures and clinical treatment schemes. Moreover, the personality is associated with a variety of mental diseases, and there is substantial comorbidity between depression and some other mental diseases. So, to reveal pathological relationships between personality and depression is helpful to understand the etiology of the comorbidity between depression and multiple mental disorders. In this review, we first summarize the empirical researches on the relationship between

Personality development from early to middle adulthood in the general population and those with mental health difficulties.

We describe personality trait maturation from early to middle adulthood in the population and in populations with common mental health or substance use problems to inform personality-sensitive public health and health services care. Data were drawn from the population-based Victorian Adolescent Health Cohort Study. Traits were measured using the NEO Five Factor Inventory at 24 and 42 years. We estimated trait rank-order stability, mean-level change, and standardised mean difference (SMD) scores in subgroups defined by patterns of substance use and common mental disorder from adolescence (15-17

Facets of Emotion Regulation and Emotional Disorder Symptom Dimensions: Differential Associations and Incremental Validity in a Large Clinical Sample.

A growing literature suggests robust associations between dimensions of emotion regulation and emotional disorder psychopathology. However, limited research has investigated associations of emotion regulation dimensions across several emotional disorders (transdiagnostic associations), or the incremental validity of emotion regulation versus the higher-order construct of neuroticism. The current study used exploratory structural equation modeling and a large clinical sample (N = 1,138) to: (a) develop a multidimensional emotion regulation measurement model, (b) evaluate the differential associ

Do antidepressants change personality?--a five-year observational study.

BACKGROUND: Whether antidepressants influence personality is a major clinical and societal issue due to their widespread use. In an observational study, we investigated whether depressive patients' neuroticism and extraversion scores covary with antidepressant pharmacotherapy, and if so, whether this remains significant after accounting for depressive or anxiety symptoms. METHODS: Major depressive disorder patients (N=237) were interviewed at up to four time-points in a five-year prospective longitudinal study. Changes in neuroticism plus extraversion scores were compared with changes in anti

The interplay between personal traits and coping strategies on shift-work tolerance: a cross-sectional study.

The ability to adapt to night shift work varies greatly among individuals, but little is known about how personal traits and coping strategies interact to affect shift-work tolerance. This study aimed to identify how certain personal traits (e.g., flexibility, languidness, chronotype, and neuroticism) and behavioral and coping strategies influence shift-work tolerance. Additionally, it explored whether behavioral and coping strategies moderate the association between neuroticism and shift-work tolerance. In this cross-sectional study, nurses (N=297) working rotating shifts consisting of either

The Emotion Regulation Mechanism in Neurotic Individuals: The Potential Role of Mindfulness and Cognitive Bias.

Neuroticism is a personality trait that impacts daily life and raises the risk of mental problems and physical illnesses. To understand the emotion regulation mechanism of neurotic individuals, we developed two complementary studies to examine the effects of mindfulness and negative cognitive bias. In Study 1, four scales (EPQ-RSC, FFMQ, CERQ, NCPBQ) were used for assessment. Correlation analysis and structural comparison showed that: (1) the level of neuroticism was positively correlated with negative emotion regulation; (2) negative cognitive bias mediated the relationship between neuroticis

Associations between the Five-Factor Model personality traits and psychotic experiences in patients with psychotic disorders, their siblings and controls.

Earlier studies indicated that personality characteristics contribute to symptomatic outcome in patients with psychotic disorders. The aim of the present study was to further explore this connection by examining the relationship between the Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits and a dimensional liability for psychosis. FFM traits according to the NEO-FFI and levels of subclinical psychotic symptoms according to the CAPE were assessed in 217 patients with psychotic disorders, 281 of their siblings and 176 healthy controls. Psychotic symptoms according to the PANSS were assessed in the pat

Psychological factors influencing post-operative pain and analgesic consumption.

The personality factors, post-operative pain experience and analgesic requirements after minor oral surgery under general anaesthesia of 103 patients are presented. Psychiatric morbidity, neuroticism and anxiety were related to increased pain which tended to persist longer than normal. Trait anxiety also correlated with simple analgesic consumption, and neuroticism was weakly associated with Omnopon requirements. Thus, regular analgesics prescribed for at least 3 days will anticipate the needs of such patients. Despite higher levels of anxiety and neuroticism, women did not complain of more pa
