The nitrogen transformations with attention to NH3 and HCN were investigated at temperatures of 300-800°C during microwave pyrolysis of a protein model compound. The evolution of nitrogenated compounds in the char, tar and gas products were conducted. The amine-N, heterocyclic-N and nitrile-N compounds were identified as three important intermediates during the pyrolysis. An easily prepared iron(ii) amide precatalyst enables the selective hydroboration of carbonyls with HBpin (pinacolborane) in the absence of any additive. The reactions proceed with low catalytic loading (1-3 mol%) under mild reaction conditions and display wide functional group compatibility. Aldehydes are selectively hydroborated in the presence of other reducible functional groups, such as ketones, alkenes, nitriles, esters, amides, acids and halides.

The photoreduction of substituted nitro (hetero)arenes by iPrOH has been achieved in batch and continuous flow chemistry. Good yields of N-(hetero)arylhydroxylamines were obtained when nitrobenzene was substituted by electron-withdrawing groups. The reaction is chemoselective as nitriles, esters, carboxylic acids, ketones, and halides are not reduced. The application of the photoreduction of nitrobenzene to the synthesis of paracetamol was achieved by the acetylation of N-phenylhydroxylamine followed by an original 1,5-rearrangement.

Radical hydroboration reactions have only recently been reported and are still rare. Here we describe a photoredox radical hydroboration of α,β-unsaturated esters, amides, ketones, and nitriles with NHC-boranes that uses only an organocatalyst and visible light. The conditions are mild, the substrate scope is broad, and the α/β regioselectivity is high. The reaction requires only the organocatalyst; there is no costly metal, and there are no other additives (base, cocatalyst, initiator).

We report the preparation of potassium acyltrifluoroborates (KATs) from widely available carboxylic acids. Mixed anhydrides of carboxylic acids were prepared using isobutyl chloroformate and transformed to the corresponding KATs using a commercial copper catalyst, B2 (pin)2 , and aqueous KHF2 . This method allows for the facile preparation of aliphatic, aromatic, and amino acid-derived KATs and is compatible with a variety of functional groups including alkenes, esters, halides, nitriles, and protected amines.

α-Vinylation of phosphonates, phosphine oxides, sulfones, sulfonamides, and sulfoxides has been achieved by selective C-H zincation and copper-catalyzed C(sp3 )-C(sp2 ) cross-coupling reaction using vinylphenyliodonium salts. The vinylation transformation proceeds in high efficiency and stereospecificity under mild reaction conditions. This zincative cross-coupling reaction represents a general alkenylation strategy, which is also applicable for α-alkenylation of esters, amides, and nitriles in the synthesis of β,γ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.
