Bio-degraded of sulfamethoxazole by microbial consortia without addition nutrients: Mineralization, nitrogen removal, and proteomic characterization.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is widely employed as an antibiotic, while its residue in environment has become a common public concern. Using 100 mg/L SMX as the sole nutrient source, the acclimated sludge obtained by this study displayed an excellent SMX degradation performance. The addition of SMX resulted in significant microbiological differentiation within the acclimated sludge. Microbacterium (6.6%) was identified as the relatively dominant genera in metabolism group that used SMX as sole carbon source. Highly expressed proteins from this strain strongly suggested its essential role in SMX degr

Hyperammonemia.

A symptomatic elevation in plasma ammonium concentration, termed hyperammonemia, is associated with numerous congenital and acquired conditions (Table 11). In some cases, such as urea cycle disorders, ammonia is the principal toxin. In other instances, such as portal systemic encephalopathy, it is but one of a number of metabolic disturbances, However, in either case hyperammonemic episodes should be treated aggressively to prevent coma, subsequent brain damage, or death. This involves restricting protein intake, providing adequate calories, and giving agents that remove accumulated nitrogen.

Body size mediates the functional potential of soil organisms by diversity and community assembly across soil aggregates.

Body size is an important life-history trait that affects organism niche occupancy and ecological interactions. However, it is still unclear to what extent the assembly process of organisms with different body sizes affects soil biogeochemical cycling processes at the aggregate level. Here, we examined the diversity and community assembly of soil microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and protists) and microfauna (nematodes) with varying body sizes. The microbial functional potential associated with carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur metabolism within three soil aggregate sizes (large macroagg

Enzymatic Activity and Its Relationship with Organic Matter Characterization and Ecotoxicity to Aliivibrio fischeri of Soil Samples Exposed to Tetrabutylphosphonium Bromide.

This study aimed to determine the impact of tetrabutylphosphonium bromide [TBP][Br] on the soil environment through an experiment on loamy sand samples. The tested salt was added to soil samples at doses of 0 (control), 1, 10, 100, and 1000 mg kg-1 dry matter (DM). During the experiment, the activity of selected enzymes involved in carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen cycles, characteristics of organic matter with Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and toxicity of soil samples in relation to Aliivibrio fischeri were determined at weekly intervals. The results showed that low doses of…

Observed nitrogen accumulation during salinity and temperature surges in a coastal dam controlled lake.

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that bidirectional dam operations modulate Total Nitrogen (TN) accumulation through changes in salinity, temperature, and hydrodynamic flushing in Guana Lake, Florida. We conducted one year of monthly surveys, complemented by continuous and discrete measurements of TN and key water quality parameters (salinity, temperature, pH, chlorophyll-a, and dissolved oxygen). During summer 2024, management actions increased saltwater inflow to suppress freshwater vegetation, which reduced net outflow and tidal flushing. Together with high evaporation, these actions

The dual role of biochar in modulating microplastic effects on soil nitrogen.

Microplastics persist in the environment due to their resistance to degradation and pose an increasing concern for terrestrial ecosystems, threatening soil physicochemical properties and nitrogen (N) cycling. Biochar is widely used to improve soil quality and mitigate contamination. However little is known about how biochar modulates microplastic effects on soil N cycling. Therefore, we conducted a soil incubation experiment to investigate the effects of different polyethylene microplastic particle sizes (6.5, 600 and 1700 μm) on soil N dynamics and to evaluate the combined influence of biocha

Controlling harmful cyanobacterial blooms in a hyper-eutrophic lake (Lake Taihu, China): the need for a dual nutrient (N & P) management strategy.

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms, reflecting advanced eutrophication, are spreading globally and threaten the sustainability of freshwater ecosystems. Increasingly, non-nitrogen (N(2))-fixing cyanobacteria (e.g., Microcystis) dominate such blooms, indicating that both excessive nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loads may be responsible for their proliferation. Traditionally, watershed nutrient management efforts to control these blooms have focused on reducing P inputs. However, N loading has increased dramatically in many watersheds, promoting blooms of non-N(2) fixers, and altering lake nutrient

How the ammonium-to-nitrate ratio shaped system performance: The role of keystone taxa and network stability in microalgal-bacterial symbiotic system.

The microalgal-bacterial symbiotic system (MBSS) represents a promising sustainable technology for wastewater treatment, and its performance is tightly linked to operational parameters. Nevertheless, the systematic understanding of how the ammonium-to-nitrate ratio drives MBSS performance remains largely insufficient. Here MBSS was operated under a constant total nitrogen concentration with varying ammonium-to-nitrate ratios (4: 0, 3: 1, 2: 2, 1: 3, 0: 4). By integrating physicochemical analysis, amplicon sequencing, nitrogen cycling functional prediction, and multivariate statistics, it was f

Ni-Doped MoS2/N-Doped Carbon Hollow Nanostructures for Sodium-Ion Half and Full Batteries.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are restricted in their energy storage capacity primarily because the considerable size of Na+ and inherently slow redox processes limit efficient charge transfer. Transition metal chalcogenides with layered structures have considerable promise as advanced materials of SIBs. Herein, the Ni-doped hollow MoS2/NC spheres with nitrogen-doped carbon are fabricated by a simple water/ethanol system combined with thermal annealing. Nickel doping effectively modifies the electronic properties of MoS2, leading to a substantial improvement in electrical conductivity and an inc

Microbially driven Fe-N cycle: Intrinsic mechanisms, enhancement, and perspectives.

The iron‑nitrogen (FeN) cycle driven by microbes has great potential for treating wastewater. Fe is a metal that is frequently present in the environment and one of the crucial trace elements needed by microbes. Due to its synergistic role in the microbial N removal process, Fe goes much beyond the essential nutritional needs of microorganisms. Investigating the mechanisms behind the linked Fe-N cycle driven by microbes is crucial. The Fe-N cycle is frequently connected with anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox), nitrification, denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA

Micro-aeration unlocks endogenous nitrogen removal in anaerobic digesters via metabolically versatile fermentative bacteria.

Ammonia inhibition represents a significant bottleneck in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of high-nitrogen organic wastes. This study employed a batch reactor system subjected to alternating carbon-sufficient and carbon-limited phases to investigate whether pulsed micro-aeration, with a peak oxidation-reduction potential ranging from -150 to -50 mV, could promote the conversion of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) to N2 in anaerobic digesters maintained under bulk anaerobic conditions, while simultaneously elucidating the competitive interplay between this nitrogen removal process and methanogenesis.

Nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation coupled to Fe(III) reduction as a source of ammonium and nitrous oxide.

'Candidatus Methanoperedens nitroreducens' is an archaeal methanotroph with global importance that links carbon and nitrogen cycles and great potential for sustainable operation of wastewater treatment. It has been reported to mediate the anaerobic oxidation of methane through a reverse methanogenesis pathway while reducing nitrate to nitrite. Here, we demonstrate that 'Ca. M. nitroreducens' reduces ferric iron forming ammonium (23.1 %) and nitrous oxide (N2O, 46.5 %) from nitrate. These results are supported with the upregulation of genes coding for proteins responsible for dissimilatory nitr…

Constructing a model including the cryptic sulfur cycle in Chesapeake Bay requires judicious choices for key processes and parameters.

A new biogeochemical model for Chesapeake Bay has been developed by merging two published models - the ECB model of Da et al. (2018) that has been calibrated for the Bay but only simulates nitrogen, carbon and oxygen and the BioRedoxCNPS model of al Azhar et al. (2014) and Hantsoo et al. (2018) that includes cryptic sulfur cycling. Comparison between these models shows that judicious choices are required for key processes and parameters. This manuscript documents the sources of differences between the two published models in order to select the most realistic configuration for our new model.•T

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Encapsulated Ordered Mesoporous SiOx as Anode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries.

SiOx (0<x<2) has been broadly investigated as a promising anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity, low cost, and proper working voltage. Nevertheless, its practical application is hindered by volume expansion during the lithiation process and low electrical conductivity, resulting in rapid capacity decay. Herein, we designed a core-shell structured nitrogen-doped carbon-encapsulated ordered mesoporous SiOx composite (SiOx @NC) using 3-aminophenol-formaldehyde (3-AF) as carbon and nitrogen precursor, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica precursor, and

Short-chain perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA) disrupts anaerobic ammonium oxidation in riverbed sediments and reshapes the functional microbial community.

Perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), a representative short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid, is increasingly detected in aquatic environments, yet its impacts on anaerobic nitrogen cycling remain poorly understood. Here, a laboratory-scale simulated river sediment system was established to investigate the concentration-dependent effects of PFBA (1 ng/L-50 mg/L) on Anammox performance, microbial communities, functional genes, and PFBA transformation. Low PFBA concentrations (≤1 μg/L) stimulated nitrogen removal, with NH4+-N conversion and NO2--N removal increasing by 30.8% and 38.9%, respectivel

Valorization of vitamin C industrial byproduct as a soil amendment: Environmental benefits and enhancement of maize productivity.

The mechanisms by which vitamin C residue after evaporation (RAE) regulates soil microbial processes and maize productivity remain unclear. A randomized complete block field trial was conducted in 2023. The trial evaluated the effects of RAE on soil nutrient availability, microbial functional potential, and maize productivity, with three treatments: (1) untreated control (CK), (2) low RAE rate (LR: 150 L/ha), and (3) high RAE rate (HR: 300 L/ha), each with four replicates. RAE was applied through drip irrigation at the six-leaf and fourteen-leaf stages of maize. RAE application increased soil

Graphitic carbon nitride alleviates cadmium toxicity to soybeans through nitrogen supply.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a promising candidate for heavy metal remediation, primarily composed of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). It has been demonstrated that g-C3N4 adjusts rhizosphere physicochemical conditions, especially N conditions, alleviating the absorption and accumulation of Cadmium (Cd) by soybeans. However, the mechanisms by which g-C3N4 induces N alterations to mitigates plant uptake of Cd remain unclear. This study investigated the impact of g-C3N4-mediated changes in N conditions on the accumulation of Cd by soybeans using pot experiments. It also explored the microbio

Effect of temperature and prey type on nutrient regeneration by an antarctic bacterivorous protist.

Experimental studies were carried out on an Antarctic isolate of the heterotrophic nanoflagellate Paraphysomonas imperforata to examine the efficiency of incorporation and remineralization of nitrogen and phosphorus from bacterial prey. Experiments were carried out over a temperature range from ambient Antarctic temperature (0 degrees C) to 10 degrees C. Temperature had a marked effect on the maximal growth rate of the phagotrophic nanoflagellate. Growth rate in the presence of high prey abundance ranged from 0.6 day(-1) at 0 degrees C to 2.6 day(-1) at 10 degrees C. In contrast, temperature h
