Elevated selenium (Se) concentrations in surface water and groundwater have become a concern in areas of the Western United States due to the deleterious effects of Se on aquatic ecosystems. RATIONALE: Bone is commonly used in radiocarbon dating in archaeology and other disciplines. Despite advances in collagen extraction protocols, the process remains destructive, requiring sawing, drilling or crushing of bone material. While non-destructive approaches have recently been applied in ancient genomics and palaeoproteomics, no equivalent approach has been established for radiocarbon dating of bone. We explored whether this is possible using a series of experiments.
METHODS: We experimented by using a water-based approach to extract soluble collagen from whole bone and teeth samples.

Explosives used in construction have been implicated as sources of NO3(-) contamination in groundwater, but direct forensic evidence is limited. Identification of blasting-related NO3(-) can be complicated by other NO3(-) sources, including agriculture and wastewater disposal, and by hydrogeologic factors affecting NO3(-) transport and stability. Here we describe a study that used hydrogeology, chemistry, stable isotopes, and mass balance calculations to evaluate groundwater NO3(-) sources and transport in areas surrounding a highway construction site with documented blasting in New Hampshire.

In this article, we describe the characteristic (15)N chemical shifts of isatin oxime ethers and their isomer nitrone. These oxime ethers and nitrones are the alkylation reaction products of isatin oximes. In our study, the (15)N chemical shifts observed in these oxime ethers were in the 402-408 (or 22-28) ppm range, although those for their corresponding nitrone series were in the 280-320 (or -100 to -60) ppm range. This remarkable difference in (15)N NMR chemical shift values could potentially be used to determine the O- versus N-alkylation of oximes, even when only one isomer is available.

Investigations using ammonium citrate-(15)N and urea-(15)N showed that children in the acute stage of kwashiorkor and marasmus receiving a diet of adequate protein content retained a considerable percentage of the label from both compounds. Excretion of both total (15)N and urea-(15)N was subnormal and elimination was virtually completed 36 hr after administration of the isotope. This manuscript describes the synthesis of γ-lactam from the nitrogen insertion reaction of cyclobutanones using an oxime as an aminating reagent with a catalytic amount of Brønsted acid. This method was employed with a more stable oxime reagent, which is a precursor analog of hydroxylamine derivatives with explosive properties. We have directly observed the oxyferryl group of ferryl myoglobin by resonance Raman spectroscopy. The FeIV = O stretching vibration is observed at 797 cm-1 and confirmed by an 18O-induced isotopic shift to 771 cm-1. The porphyrin center-to-nitrogen distance of ferryl myoglobin is significantly less than that previously observed for horseradish peroxidase compound II, which also contains an FeIV = O heme. The FeIII-CN- stretch of myoglobin (FeIII) cyanide is observed at 454 cm-1, which shifts to 449 cm-1 upon substitution with [13C]cyanide.
