Past exposure to densely ionizing radiation leaves a unique permanent signature in the genome.

Speculation has long surrounded the question of whether past exposure to ionizing radiation leaves a unique permanent signature in the genome. Intrachromosomal rearrangements or deletions are produced much more efficiently by densely ionizing radiation than by chemical mutagens, x-rays, or endogenous aging processes. Until recently, such stable intrachromosomal aberrations have been very hard to detect, but a new chromosome band painting technique has made their detection practical. We report the detection and quantification of stable intrachromosomal aberrations in lymphocytes of healthy form

Synthesis and self-assembly of new quinuclidinolium-based surfactants: enhanced activity of cytochrome c and efficient antimicrobial activity.

Bio-based surfactants are a great alternative to conventional surfactants owing to their low toxicity and minimal environmental impact. Herein, four new 3-quinuclidinol-based surfactants, namely, [C16Qui][Br], [C12Qui][Br], [C12AQui][Br] and [C8Qui][Br], have been synthesized and characterized for the first time. The thermal stability of all the surfactants at higher than 250 °C makes them suitable for high-temperature applications. The self-assembly behavior of these surfactants is thoroughly characterized using various techniques. The interactions between relatively hydrophobic bulky head gr

RET/PTC and PAX8/PPARγ chromosomal rearrangements in post-Chernobyl thyroid cancer and their association with iodine-131 radiation dose and other characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Childhood exposure to iodine-131 from the 1986 nuclear accident in Chernobyl, Ukraine, led to a sharp increase in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) incidence in regions surrounding the reactor. Data concerning the association between genetic mutations in PTCs and individual radiation doses are limited. METHODS: Mutational analysis was performed on 62 PTCs diagnosed in a Ukrainian cohort of patients who were < 18 years old in 1986 and received 0.008 to 8.6 Gy of (131) I to the thyroid. Associations between mutation types and (131) I dose and other characteristics were explored. RE

Adaptation of the black yeast Wangiella dermatitidis to ionizing radiation: molecular and cellular mechanisms.

Observations of enhanced growth of melanized fungi under low-dose ionizing radiation in the laboratory and in the damaged Chernobyl nuclear reactor suggest they have adapted the ability to survive or even benefit from exposure to ionizing radiation. However, the cellular and molecular mechanism of fungal responses to such radiation remains poorly understood. Using the black yeast Wangiella dermatitidis as a model, we confirmed that ionizing radiation enhanced cell growth by increasing cell division and cell size. Using RNA-seq technology, we compared the transcriptomic profiles of the wild typ

Psychophysiologic aftereffects of prenatal irradiation.

Prenatally irradiated children (n = 544), who were born between 26 April 1986 and 26 February 1987, in regions of the Ukraine which were radioactively contaminated as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, their mothers and teachers have been examined with psychometric tests. The control group of relevant children (n = 759), their mothers and teachers, were living at the radioecological 'clear' regions (Kharkov and Kharkov Region). Further, we randomly selected 50 prenatally irradiated children whose mothers were evacuated from the Chernobyl exclusion zone and 50 age-and-gender-matched non-expose

Studies on efficacy of a novel 177Lu-labeled porphyrin derivative in regression of tumors in mouse model.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to develop a (177)Lu-labeled porphyrin derivative having favorable characteristics for use in targeted radiotherapy of cancer and to evaluate its biological behavior in mouse tumor models with respect to its effectiveness in tumor regression. Owing to the inherent affinity of porphyrins to accumulate in the tumors, suitably modified porphyrin derivative was chosen as the vehicle for the targeted delivery of the radionuclide. (177)Lu was preferred as the radionuclide of choice due to its suitable nuclear decay characteristics [E(β(max)) = 497 keV, Eγ

Multi-element follow up in biological specimens of hard metal pneumoconiosis.

The movement of Co and the other components of the hard metal in the body fluids, their solubility, their links to the cells and proteins of the body, and their clearance are largely unknown. The first aim of this work is to evaluate whether Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA), a new analytical technique based on the radiochemical separation of samples irradiated in a Nuclear Reactor, may be suitable for studying the movement of elements in tissues or body fluids of workers over time. We have investigated seven hard metal workers, all employed in the grinding process, with NAA studies (single st

Thyroid consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

It is well recognized that the use of external irradiation of the head and neck to treat patients with various non-thyroid disorders increases their risk of developing papillary thyroid carcinoma years after radiation exposure. An increased risk of thyroid cancer has also been reported in survivors of the atomic bombs in Japan, as well as in Marshall Island residents exposed to radiation during the testing of hydrogen bombs. More recently, exposure to radioactive fallout as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident has clearly caused an enormous increase in the incidence of childhood

Testing prediction capabilities of an 131I terrestrial transport model by using measurements collected at the Hanford nuclear facility.

A model describing transport of 131I in the environment was developed by SENES Oak Ridge, Inc., for assessment of radiation doses and excess lifetime risk from 131I atmospheric releases from Oak Ridge Reservation in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and from Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory in southeast Idaho. This paper describes the results of an exercise designed to test the reliability of this model and to identify the main sources of uncertainty in doses and risks estimated by this model. The testing of the model was based on materials published by the International Atomic Ener

The Chornobyl Dogs: Why Scientific Evaluation Must Accompany Population Management.

Nearly four decades after the 1986 reactor explosion, several hundred semi-feral dogs persist within the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Genomic work has characterised their population structure and shown that radiation-induced mutation does not, on current evidence, drive the differentiation between groups; the cause of that differentiation remains unresolved, and their epigenome has never been examined. These dogs are a potentially valuable model for chronic, low-dose, multi-stressor exposure, not because they are "radiation-adapted", a contested claim, but because they are a human-adjacent, dense

Cerebral impact of prenatal irradiation by 131I: an experimental model of clinical neuroradioembryological effects.

UNLABELLED: Human brain in prenatal period is a most vulnerable to ionizing radiation body structure. Unlike atomic bombings or radiological interventions in healthcare leading at most to external irradiation the intensive internal exposure may occur upon nuclear reactor accidents followed by substantial release and fallout of radioactive 131I. The latter can lead to specific neuroradioembryological effects. OBJECTIVE: To create an experimental model of prenatal cerebral radiation effects of 131I in human and to determine the experimental and clinical neuroradioembryological effects.Study obj

Feasibility evaluation of neutron capture therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma using selective enhancement of boron accumulation in tumour with intra-arterial administration of boron-entrapped water-in-oil-in-water emulsion.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most difficult to cure with surgery, chemotherapy, or other combinational therapies. In the treatment of HCC, only 30% patients can be operated due to complication of liver cirrhosis or multiple intrahepatic tumours. Tumour cell destruction in boron neutron-capture therapy (BNCT) is due to the nuclear reaction between (10)B atoms and thermal neutrons, so it is necessary to accumulate a sufficient quantity of (10)B atoms in tumour cells for effective tumour cell destruction by BNCT. Water-in-oil-in-water (WOW) emulsion has been used as

A framework for estimating radiation-related cancer risks in Japan from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident.

We present here a methodology for health risk assessment adopted by the World Health Organization that provides a framework for estimating risks from the Fukushima nuclear accident after the March 11, 2011 Japanese major earthquake and tsunami. Substantial attention has been given to the possible health risks associated with human exposure to radiation from damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station. Cumulative doses were estimated and applied for each post-accident year of life, based on a reference level of exposure during the first year after the earthquake. A lifetime

Effects of time of administration and dietary iodine levels on potassium iodide (KI) blockade of thyroid irradiation by 131I from radioactive fallout.

Radioiodines, particularly 131I, may be released into the environment in breach-of-containment nuclear reactor accidents and localize in and irradiate the thyroid with an attendant risk of neoplastic growth and other adverse health effects. Pharmacologic thyroid blockade by oral potassium iodide (KI) (50-100 mg in adults) can substantially reduce thyroid uptake of and irradiation by internalized radioiodine. In the current analysis, computer modeling of iodine metabolism has been used to systematically elucidate the effects of two practically important but highly variable factors on the radiop
