A Mixed-Methods, International, Multisite Study to Develop and Validate a Measure of Nurse-to-Physician Communication in Simulation.

AIM: This study examined the reliability and validity of the ISBAR Interprofessional Communication Rubric (IICR). BACKGROUND: Improving education regarding communication in health care is a global priority. Communication is difficult to measure and no evaluation rubrics were located that uniquely focused on nurse-to-physician communication in simulation. METHOD: This study used a mixed-methods design and included five sites. RESULTS: The IICR was determined reliable among nurse educator raters (r = 0.79). The scale was found valid as assessed by nurse and physician experts (content validity

Workshop-based participatory research design through the lens of a culture-centered approach (CCA).

PURPOSE: Nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) play a crucial role in health communication, yet their voices are often overlooked. This study explores communication challenges from nurses' perspectives to develop a sustainable communication infrastructure. METHODS: A workshop-based participatory design (WBPD) was used, where NICU nurses worked collaboratively to identify communication barriers. Thematic analysis was conducted using the culture-centered approach (CCA) to ensure context-specific solutions, integrating both researcher insights and NICU-based communication infrastruct

Managing Everyday Life: A Qualitative Study of Patients' Experiences of a Web-Based Ulcer Record for Home-Based Treatment.

Chronic skin ulcers are a significant challenge for patients and health service resources, and ulcer treatment often requires the competence of a specialist. Although e-health interventions are increasingly valued for ulcer care by giving access to specialists at a distance, there is limited research on patients' use of e-health services for home-based ulcer treatment. This article reports an exploratory qualitative study of the first Norwegian web-based counselling service for home-based ulcer treatment, established in 2011 by the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN). Community nurses, g

Effectiveness of a community program to promote early breast cancer detection.

There are no known means of preventing breast cancer, and efforts to control the disease must be directed toward early detection and improved treatment. To assist in achieving this, we developed a two-tier educational program aimed at educating women regarding breast cancer facts and the proper performance of breast self-examination (BSE). Educational efforts are first directed at nurses who are then encouraged to transmit this information to women and their partners in the community. The program combines a lecture and demonstration with more informal small group discussions that allow for ind

Better working conditions won by 'nurse wave' action: Japanese nurses' experience of getting a new law by their militant campaign.

Japanese nurses, like their counterparts in many other countries, are suffering from staff shortages and severe working conditions. The Japan Federation of Medical Workers' Unions (Nihon Iroren) launched a campaign in 1989 for nurses called the 'Nurse Wave'. Their demands were many: to increase the numbers of nursing staff, the regulation of night shifts, the implementation of a five-day working week everywhere, a fair appraisal of nurses' work, better vocational training, etc. Nurses in white uniforms assembled at meetings, marched and took part in nation-wide strikes. They collected over 5.4

A profile of learning disability nurses.

Profiling exercises provide vital data for effective and efficient deployment of resources and for monitoring the development of services. A survey, focusing solely on community nurses for people with learning disabilities in Northern Ireland, was carried out in 1992. The findings showed, among other things, a higher caseload per nurse than the UK average. While more than half the workforce had multiple qualifications there was a lack of clinical specialist training.

Adult student nurses' experiences of encountering perceived child abuse or neglect during their community placement: Implications for nurse education.

INTRODUCTION: While child nursing students may expect to encounter child abuse and neglect and assume a safeguarding role when they qualify, those undertaking adult nursing courses may not expect to come into contact with children and may be even less likely to expect to encounter child abuse or neglect. This paper presents the findings of an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) study. Students learn through experience and reflection and Mezirow's Transformational Learning Theory (TLT) was used to explain the various ways in which nine adult nursing students attempted to make sense o

Unsung Healthcare Heroes for Children.

Schools play a vital role in communities by supporting the health, well-being, and development of children. This commentary explores the perspective of school nurses, who are frequently the sole medical providers responsible for the health of hundreds to thousands of children across multiple schools. They play a critical role in identifying medical and social issues, dealing with pushback when enforcing health protocols, and providing life-saving care under challenging conditions. Examples of their work include managing chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes, conducting contact tracing du
