Impact of diagnosis of overweight and obesity on weight management among hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a growing epidemic associated with a 30% increase in general mortality. Despite this, diagnosis and treatment is still deficient. A large number of patients with overweight and obesity enter hospitals daily; therefore, the hospital setting could be used as a scenario for intervention in this population. OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of diagnosis and treatment of overweight/obesity in hospitalized patients and to identify the factors involved in the probability of offering a diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 316 patients aged 18 years

Childhood and adolescent obesity definitions as related to BMI, evaluation and management options.

In North America, 30% of children are overweight or obese. Child obesity is a precursor to adult health risks. Diagnosis of childhood obesity is difficult. The best measurement is BMI percentile charts. Obesity in children and adolescents can be treated by diet and activity changes. Family involvement in healthy lifestyle changes is best for weight loss and prevention.

Poor management of low birth weight compounds obesity and chronic diseases in Cuba.

The Cuban population exhibits high prevalence of overweight and associated chronic non-communicable diseases, trends that begin in childhood. In addition to factors related to the mother's health, factors contributing to excess weight gain in Cuban children are: reduced prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding of infants up to six months of age, full-term low birth weight infants and nutritional mismanagement of this group, incorrect complementary feeding, obesogenic diet, family history and sedentary lifestyles. Thus, it is important to adopt comprehensive, multisectoral strategies that promote

Effectiveness of a publicly funded clinical paediatric weight management program on obesity outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of a publicly funded, paediatric weight management clinic in decreasing obesity. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients four to 16 years of age, from 2006 to 2009, was performed at a medically supervised weight management clinic (n=121). Patients participated in monthly visits and were educated about the cognitive behavioural and nutritional aspects of weight management. RESULTS: The sample included 51 male and 70 female patients with a mean (± SD) initial age of 11.7±3.0 years. Patients participated in 6.4±6.5 visits (range one to 31 visi

Lessons from obesity management programmes: greater initial weight loss improves long-term maintenance.

It is a common belief that weight loss achieved at a slow rate is better preserved than if the weight is lost more rapidly. However, the literature shows that initial weight loss is positively, not negatively, related to long-term weight maintenance. There is evidence from randomised intervention trials to support that a greater initial weight loss induced without changes in lifestyle (e.g. liquid formula diets or anorectic drugs) improves long-term weight maintenance, providing it is followed by a 1-2 years integrated weight maintenance programme consisting of lifestyle interventions involvin

Physical activity for the management of obesity in children up to the age of 9 years.

RATIONALE: Childhood obesity is a major global public health concern. Although physical activity is recognised as an effective non-pharmacological intervention, most existing evidence synthesis has primarily focused on the role of physical activity in preventing obesity, with limited attention given to its effects on managing children with obesity. OBJECTIVES: To synthesise evidence on the benefits and harms of physical activity for the management of obesity in children up to 9 years of age. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, and two trial registries from 2012 to 2 June 20

Perioperative management of hemorrhagic stroke in morbidly obese patients: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) constitutes approximately 10-15% of all strokes and is a major contributor to long-term neurological morbidity and mortality. Morbid obesity (body mass index ≥40 kg/m2) is a well-recognized risk factor for hypertension and hemorrhagic stroke. Paradoxically, some studies report more favorable outcomes among obese patients with stroke - a phenomenon known as the obesity paradox. Nevertheless, specific perioperative anesthetic guidelines for this high-risk population remain inadequately addressed in current literature. METHODS: This narrative review cri

Reviewing the impact of obesity on inflammatory bowel disease and considerations for optimizing management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the complex relationship between obesity and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing their potentially shared pathogenesis, the impact of obesity on the natural history and treatment outcomes of IBD, and the management of obesity in the patient with IBD. RECENT FINDINGS: Obesity represents a state of chronic inflammation that may not only contribute to IBD pathogenesis, but also influence disease progression, complications, and response to treatment. Increased visceral adiposity may carry negative prognostic implications for disease and treatment

Natural H2S-donors: A new pharmacological opportunity for the management of overweight and obesity.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity has progressively increased in the last few years, becoming a real threat to healthcare systems. To date, the clinical management of body weight gain is an unmet medical need, as there are few approved anti-obesity drugs and most require an extensive monitoring and vigilance due to risk of adverse effects and poor patient adherence/persistence. Growing evidence has shown that the gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and, therefore, H2S-donors could have a central role in the prevention and treatment of overweight/obesity. The main natural sources of H

Diagnosis and Management of Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease in the Obese Pediatric Population.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease (LCPD) is a condition marked by temporary blood flow disruption to the proximal femur, commonly afflicting children aged 15 and younger. The etiology of the disease is often idiopathic and involves the development of avascular necrosis of the femoral head, subsequently leading to bone weakening and deformity. Obesity exacerbates LCPD, correlating with delayed diagnosis, increased disease severity, and bilateral involvement. Leptin, growth hormone, and other inflammatory mediator alterations in obese individuals contribute to the pathogenesis. Treatment ranges from co

Potential for optimizing management of obesity in the secondary prevention of coronary heart disease.

AIMS: Prevention guidelines have identified the management of obese patients as an important priority to reduce the burden of incident and recurrent cardiovascular disease. Still, studies have demonstrated that over 80% of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) fail to achieve their weight target. Here, we describe advice received and actions reported by overweight CHD patients since being discharged from hospital and how weight changes relate to their risk profile. METHODS AND RESULTS: Based on data from 10 507 CHD patients participating in the EUROASPIRE IV and V studies, we analysed we
