Spatio-temporal patterns of ensheathing cell differentiation in the rat olfactory system during development.

An immunocytochemical approach with specific glial markers was used to investigate the temporal and spatial patterns of differentiation of ensheathing glia wrapping axon fascicles along the primary olfactory pathway of the rat during development. The two glial markers tested, the proteins S-100 and glial fibrillary acidic protein, are known to be expressed at different stages of maturation in glial cells. The S-100 protein was first weakly expressed in cells accompanying the olfactory axons at embryonic day 14 (E14), while a first faint glial fibrillary acidic protein staining was detected alo

Gender difference in Chinese adults with post-viral olfactory disorder:a hospital-based study.

CONCLUSIONS: This hospital-based study found a gender differences in Chinese subjects with post-viral olfactory disorder (PVOD). Women appear to face higher susceptibility to PVOD, a finding that appears to be magnified with age and duration of olfactory loss. OBJECTIVES: PVOD is one of the most common reasons for acquired olfactory dysfunction, but there is little data in Chinese populations. We analyzed Chinese subjects with PVOD in order to determine demographic risk factors and clinical features in this major population group. METHODS: Data from 143 consecutive subjects with PVOD and 117

Olfactory bulb and olfactory tract abnormalities in acrocallosal syndrome and Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome.

We describe association of olfactory bulb and olfactory tract abnormalities in a child with acrocallosal syndrome caused by kinesin family membrane 7 (KIF7) mutation in sonic hedgehog pathway. The child also had fontanellar bone in the anterior fontanelle, short sagittal suture, sagittal synostosis, hippocampal malrotation and Joubert malformation. Fontanellar bone has been described in GLI3 mutation and mutant mice models but has not been reported in KIF7 mutation. We briefly review the role of sonic hedgehog pathway and its components KIF7 and GLI3 in forebrain and olfactory system developme

Octopamine-mediated neuronal plasticity in honeybees: implications for olfactory dysfunction in humans.

Biogenic amines, such as norepinephrine (in vertebrates) and octopamine (in invertebrates), have structural and functional similarities. These amines play crucial roles in animal behavior by modifying the synaptic output of relevant neurons. Increased levels of norepinephrine in the olfactory bulb preferentially increase mitral cell excitatory responses to olfactory nerve inputs, suggesting its critical role in modulating olfactory function including memory formation and/or recall of specific olfactory memories. Increased levels of octopamine in the antennal lobe play an important role in a re

A Systematic Review of the Neuropathologic Findings of Post-Viral Olfactory Dysfunction: Implications and Novel Insight for the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Post-viral olfactory dysfunction is a common cause of both short- and long-term smell alteration. The coronavirus pandemic further highlights the importance of post-viral olfactory dysfunction. Currently, a comprehensive review of the neural mechanism underpinning post-viral olfactory dysfunction is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To synthesize the existing primary literature related to olfactory dysfunction secondary to viral infection, detail the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, highlight relevance for the current COVID-19 pandemic, and identify high impact areas of future researc

Changes in immunoreactivity to calcium-binding proteins in the anterior olfactory nucleus of the rat after neonatal olfactory deprivation.

The effects of olfactory deprivation on the density of neuronal populations expressing the calcium-binding proteins calbindin D-28k, calretinin, and parvalbumin in the anterior olfactory nucleus of the rat were studied immunohistochemically in 60-day-old rats subjected to unilateral naris closure on the day of birth. The neuronal populations were characterized morphologically and topologically, and the density of each cell type was calculated in each subdivision of the anterior olfactory nucleus at seven rostrocaudal levels. Data were gathered into three groups: data from either the ipsilatera

Olfaction and peripheral olfactory connections in methimazole-treated rats.

Methimazole has been reported to produce extensive degenerative changes in olfactory epithelium and a severe deficit in odor detection [Genter BM, Owens DM, Carlone HB, Crofton KM. Fundam. Appl. Toxicol. 1996;29:71-77; Genter BM, Owens DM, Deamer NJ, Blake BL, Wesley DS, Levi PE. Toxicol. Pathol. 1995;23:477-486.]. To examine this further, rats were tested on olfactory detection and discrimination problems before and after intraperitoneal injection of 300 mg/kg methimazole. In the first 2 days after treatment, experimental rats had nasal congestion and a modest decrement on odor detection and

Projections of the olfactory bulb and nervus terminalis in the silver lamprey.

The connections of the olfactory bulb were traced using horseradish peroxidase. A homologue of the medial olfactory tract in gnathostomes projects to the ipsilateral septal nucleus, preoptic area and, possibly, the rostral striatum. A homologue of the lateral olfactory tract projects to the ipsilateral lateral pallium, dorsal pallium and, possibly, the medial pallium, as well as to the posterior diencephalon. A component of the lateral olfactory tract decussates in the habenular and posterior commissures and distributes to the contralateral hemisphere and caudal diencephalon. A dorsal componen

Reinnervation of the olfactory bulb after section of the olfactory nerve in monkey (Saimiri sciureus).

Section of the fila olfactoria in squirrel monkey, a non-human primate, induces rapid degeneration of the sensory axon terminals in the olfactory bulb glomeruli. A population of axons, from newly formed sensory neurons in the olfactory neuroepithelium, regrow, passes the lamina cribrosa and, upon reaching the olfactory bulb, reinnervates the glomeruli. A new set of synaptic contacts is reformed between the sensory terminals and the post-synaptic dendritic processes of the glomeruli. Our observations indicate that this portion of the CNS of a non-human primate can be reinnervated after deaffere

Olfactory relationships of the telencephalon and diencephalon in the rabbit. III. The ipsilateral centrifugal fibers to the olfactory bulbar and retrobulbar formations.

The axoplasmic retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) from axon terminals to their parent cell bodies and histochemical fluorescence microscopy have been used to study the ipsilateral centrifugal fibers to the olfactory bulbs and anterior olfactory nucleus in the rabbit. Focal injections of peroxidase were placed unilaterally into the main or accessory olfactory bulb or into the anterior olfactory nucleus. In animals with injected HRP confined within the main bulb, perikarya retrogradely labeled with the protein in the ipsilateral forebrain were observed in the anterior prepyrifo

Synthesis and future challenges: the response of mosquitoes to host odours.

There is ample evidence that host seeking in mosquitoes is mediated by semiochemicals emanating from the host. Olfactory cues (kairomones) are detected through an intricate pathway, beginning with sensilla located on the antennae (odour) and palpi (CO2). Age and physiological state of the mosquito determine whether detection of kairomones results in a behavioural response. Only a few kairomones have been described so far. CO2 is a kairomone for most mosquito species and signifies the presence of a potential host because of its occurrence in the volatile emissions of all vertebrates. Other chem

The spatial organization of olfactory nerve projections.

The spatial organization of olfactory nerve projections was examined in the rat. The pathway was traced by orthograde transport of HRP following nasal lavage and by retrograde transport of HRP following injections into the olfactory bulb. The results indicated that there was a broad relationship between the epithelium and the olfactory bulb. Specific regions of the olfactory bulb received input from a large region of the epithelium. However, there was evidence that olfactory nerve terminations were not uniformly dense across their terminal fields. The results suggest that there may be finer so

Harmful effects of cadmium on olfactory system in mice.

The inhalation of certain metals can result in olfactory epithelial injury, an altered sense of smell, and direct delivery of the metal from the olfactory epithelium to the olfactory bulbs and other parts of the central nervous system. The purpose of this study was to examine whether mice given an intranasal instillation of cadmium would develop altered olfactory function and to assess whether cadmium may be transported directly from the olfactory epithelium to the central nervous system. To evaluate cadmium's ability to induce anosmia and on the basis of olfactory epithelium sensitivity to me

Ontogeny of GnRH and olfactory neuronal systems in man: novel insights from the investigation of inherited forms of Kallmann's syndrome.

GnRH embryonic neuronal fate is determined by discreet spatio-temporal expression patterns and interactions of axonal guidance and cell adhesion molecules and extracellular matrix proteins. Expression of several transcription factors, locally derived growth factors and neurotransmitters influence GnRH ontogeny and rostral forebrain specification. In man, disrupted GnRH neuronal ontogeny can be caused by several monogenic disorders leading to isolated hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (IHH); these include mutations within KAL-1, GnRH-R, and FGFR1. Mutations in KAL-1 and its encoded protein anosmin

Multimodal efferent and recurrent neurons in the medial lobes of cockroach mushroom bodies.

Previous electrophysiological studies of cockroach mushroom bodies demonstrated the sensitivity of efferent neurons to multimodal stimuli. The present account describes the morphology and physiology of several types of efferent neurons with dendrites in the medial lobes. In general, efferent neurons respond to a variety of modalities in a context-specific manner, responding to specific combinations or specific sequences of multimodal stimuli. Efferent neurons that show endogenous activity have dendritic specializations that extend to laminae of Kenyon cell axons equipped with many synaptic ves

The terminal nerve projects centrally in the hamster.

The projections of the peripheral and intracerebral portions of the hamster terminal nerve were examined with lesion and immunocytochemical techniques. After transection, proximal processes of the terminal nerve accumulate luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone-immunoreactive material, while the distal processes disintegrate and are no longer stained. It thus becomes possible to determine the direction of conduction of terminal nerve axons. The results of transection at the level of the cribriform plate, along the olfactory bulb, and in the ventral forebrain were all consistent in indicating a

Immunocytochemical identification of primary olfactory afferents in rainbow trout.

We have used a combination of techniques to analyze the primary olfactory projection in trout: anterograde tract tracing with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and immunocytochemistry with antisera to olfactory marker protein (OMP) and to keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH). HRP labeling and the OMP antiserum revealed a subset of ciliated receptor neurons with a wide dendrite that lacked the protruding knob found on other receptor neurons. The organization of the primary olfactory axons was clearly revealed by antisera to KLH, which reacted with no other neurons. When visualized with anti-KLH, fascicle
