[Branch occlusion of the central retinal artery during coronary angiography (author's transl)].

A 49-year-old man went blind in his left eye during coronary angiography. The following day an occlusion of the inferior temporal and inferior nasal branch of the central retinal artery was detected, associated with a moderate papilledema of the inferior part of the optic disk as well as retinal edema of the inferior fundus. Fluorescein angiography confirmed the clinical diagnosis, perimetry revealed loss of visual field in the superior half. Seven months after the initial examination the patient displayed a partial optic atrophy of the inferior portion of the disk associated with a moderate n…

Clinical and ultrastructural ocular histopathologic studies of adult-onset metachromatic leukodystrophy.

A twin brother and sister with adult-onset metachromatic leukodystrophy developed progressive central acuity loss and optic disk pallor. Both had normal electroretinograms and fluorescein angiography. Postmortem examination of the sister's eyes by histochemistry and electron microscopy revealed ganglion cell loss and optic atrophy. Cerebroside sulfate had accumulated in optic nerve glial cells. Optic atrophy was more advanced than in previously reported cases of infantile-onset metachromatic leukodystrophy. The pathologic process seemed to be retrograde optic nerve degeneration due to abnormal…

Engelmann's disease.

A 5-year-old boy with diaphyseal dysplasia who exhibited marked involvement of the cranial bones developed marked disk edema in a one-year period. We believed the optic canal was being rapidly compromised by bony proliferation and vision was threatened. Selective bone studies, including tetracycline labeling, demonstrated a rapid accretion of bone 1 1/2 to two times the expected rate for his age. We performed bilateral unroofing of the optic canals with additional temporal decompression of the left orbit. Limited unroofing of the right eye proved to be inadequate and only with additional exten

Echographic measurement of optic nerve thickness correlated with neuroretinal rim area and visual field defect in glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To determine whether echographic measurements of the pial diameter of the optic nerve are significantly correlated with glaucomatous changes of the optic disk and retinal nerve fiber layer. METHODS: In 31 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and 16 normal control subjects, optic nerve thickness was determined by measuring the maximal pial diameter of the optic nerve using standardized A-scan echography. The optic disks were morphometrically examined using color stereo photographs, and the retinal nerve fiber layer was assessed using wide-angle red-free fundus photographs. RESUL…

[Optic papilla parameters in healthy subjects--quantified with the optic nerve head analyzer].

The cup-disk ratio (CDR), the size of the neuroretinal rim area as well as the other disk parameters investigated with the Optic Nerve Head Analyzer (ONHA) were measured in double examinations of 32 healthy eyes in 32 patients. Thus, "normal" values were determined for the various disk parameters. A new method is presented for calculating one average pallor value for the disk. The mean value for disk pallor in healthy eyes is determined. Examination of the CDR in the quadrants of the disk reveals significant differences. According to the results of a multi-regressional analysis of the various

Peripapillary atrophy in primary angle-closure glaucoma: a comparative study with primary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To investigate the characteristics of peripapillary atrophy in primary angle-closure glaucoma and to compare peripapillary atrophy … phy in primary angle-closure glaucoma has a different relationship to the structural and functional optic disk changes than that in primary open-angle glaucoma. Different mechanisms seem to be involved in the development of the optic disk damage in the two types of glaucoma.

[Glaucoma and high-frequency ultrasound].

The iridocorneal angle and the ciliary body are imaged with high precision using high-frequency ultrasound. A long-focus 20-MHz probe provides high-resolution imaging of the optic disk and optic nerve. These improvements mean that glaucomatous patients can be imaged by ultrasound with increased precision.

Case report: bilateral optic nerve head drusen and glaucoma.

Optic nerve head drusen is an incidental finding in current ophthalmological practice. Although patients rarely display symptoms, structural, and functional defects, there are exceptional cases when clinical appearance can make it difficult to diagnose underlying or coexisting conditions, such as glaucoma. The following case report demonstrates how overlapping optic nerve pathologies can interfere in clinical judgement and therapeutic decision making in a young male patient, with relevant family history for both glaucoma and bilateral optic nerve head drusen.

Pathophysiology of the progressive optic neuropathy of glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the most common chronic optic neuropathy. Although traditionally considered a disease of elevated intraocular pressure, it is now clear that glaucoma is primarily a distinctive optic neuropathy. This article discusses the distinctive features of glaucoma: disk morphology, visual field patterns, and disease progression. The primary goal is to distinguish glaucoma from other optic neuropathies and, in so doing, to suggest some hypotheses for its etiology.

Imaging modalities in optic disc drusen: A literature review and proposed diagnostic algorithm.

Optic disc drusen (ODD) concern highly prevalent anatomical features that are increasingly recognised as a risk factor for various pathological conditions. In clinical practice, differentiation between ODD and true papilloedema poses considerable challenges, often resulting in the effectuation of unnecessary, potentially invasive examinations. Furthermore, recent years have witnessed a notable expansion in imaging modalities employed to map ODD, primarily novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) modalities. A growing necessity arises for literature providing a profound comparison between most

Advances in origin, evolution, and pathogenesis of optic disc drusen: A narrative review.

Optic disc drusen (ODD) is acellular calcified deposits found mainly in front of the lamina cribrosa within the optic nerve. It can cause chronic or acute vision loss. There has been progress in clinical diagnosis using ophthalmic multimodal imaging in recent years. We conducted a database search on PubMed and Google Scholar (April 2023) with no restrictions on publication year or language. We used the terms: ("optic disc drusen") OR ("optic nerve head drusen") OR ("drusen of optic nerve head"). Other terms included gene, mutation, scleral canal, axonal transport, calcinosis, mitochondria, blo
