AIM: The canine is the tooth that, together with the third molar, presents the highest risk of inclusion: 85% of these teeth are located in the palate and 15% in the buccal area. In most treatment plans, retained canines are driven to extrusion through orthodontic treatment. However, in some cases, for technical reasons or patient choice, it is not possible to perform this consolidated approach. The present clinical report evaluates 10 ectopic canines transplanted in both adults and younger patients with up to 60 months of follow-up.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Two clinical cases are described in detai

This case reports the retreatment of a young adult who had a previous orthodontic history of inappropriate biomechanical strategies leading to iatrogenic effects with the formation of a dual occlusal plane causing anterior dental extrusion. As a result, an already severe dento-skeletal malocclusion with a vertical growth pattern, severe gummy smile, increased overjet and a very deep bite along with procumbent and incompetent lips became exaggerated. The high smile line and heavy convex profile were changed to an average smile line and a straight profile by intruding the anterior maxillary segm

RATIONALE: Mesiodens are supernumerary teeth located in the pre-maxilla between the two central incisors with a prevalence rate of 0.15-1.9%. An impacted mesiodens may cause delayed eruption of permanent incisors, ectopic eruption, pathological disturbances and malalignment of teeth.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient complained of missing upper front teeth associated with pain in the same region for two weeks.
DIAGNOSIS: Upon clinical and radiographic examination, it was diagnosed as triple impacted mesiodens with impacted permanent maxillary central incisors.
TREATMENT: The clinicians in the s

Internal bleaching in endodontically treated teeth requires care and protection to prevent harm to the periodontal ligament due to peroxide and may result in external root resorption. There is a myriad of treatment options when this occurs, such as monitoring, extraction, and subsequent rehabilitation with implants or fixed prosthodontics. In some cases, such as the one described here, a conservative attempt to maintain the tooth as a single structure can be made by sealing the resorptive defect. In the present case, we show a multidisciplinary approach where orthodontics, periodontics, and re

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between orthodontic disimpaction of unilaterally impacted maxillary canines (MCs) and volumetric changes in the maxillary sinus (MS) remains underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate MS volume alterations following orthodontic traction of impacted MCs, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Additionally, it examined differences based on the impaction site (buccal vs. palatal) and sex.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective split-mouth study was conducted on patients with unilaterally impacted MCs. CBCT scans were taken before and after orthodonti

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with a horizontally impacted maxillary central incisor, a canine in the same quadrant, and an inclusion tendency. Due to severe crowing in the maxilla and the Class II molar relationship on the impaction side, a 2-stage treatment plan was developed. In the first stage, the right first premolar and deciduous canine were extracted; this allowed enough space for the eruption of the maxillary right permanent canine. The second stage included surgical exposure and traction of the impacted central incisor with a fixed orthodontic appliance. An ex

INTRODUCTION: Root dilaceration refers to a dental anomaly characterized by an abrupt deviation in the longitudinal axis of the tooth. It can be localized in the crown, between the crown and the root, or, most frequently, in the root. This report describes a horizontally unerupted maxillary central incisor with distoangular root dilacerations most likely caused by a traumatic dental injury to its primary predecessor.
METHODS: Surgical-orthodontic traction was applied after the redistribution of the space in the anterior maxillary region.
RESULTS: Root dilaceration of the tractioned tooth was

The main purpose of this review is to present the aetiological factors and the mechanism that cause dilaceration of the maxillary central incisors. In early developmental stages, the permanent tooth germ of the maxillary incisor is situated palatally and superiorly to the apex of the primary incisor and gradually changes direction in a labial direction with its crown coming closer to the resorbing primary root. For reasons of this close relationship between the permanent tooth germ and the apex of the primary incisor, it is believed that an acute trauma to the primary predecessor can cause dil

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of different pretreatment sinus-root relationships on external apical root resorption (EARR) and apical root displacement (ARD) of maxillary molars in maxillary premolar extraction treatment using a split-mouth design.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paired palatal roots of maxillary molars with different sinus-root relationships from the same patients were included in groups based on pretreatment CBCT. The relationships were classified as follows: type I, root separated from the maxillary sinus floor (MSF); type II, root contacting MSF; and type III, root protruding

BACKGROUND: Limited orthodontics are shown to be effective in the correction of infrabony defects. Studies have also demonstrated the efficacy of using enamel matrix derivative (EMD) with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) to treat infrabony defects. This study aims to compare the clinical efficacy of limited orthodontics combined with EMD/DFDBA in the treatment of 2- or 3-wall infrabony defects.
METHODS: A randomized, parallel clinical trial was conducted in a private periodontal practice (Tokyo, Japan) between April 2004 and October 2008. Treatment period was 1 year with a 1-

Distraction osteogenesis of the craniofacial skeleton has become a widely accepted, safe, and effective means of craniofacial reconstructive surgery. Despite excellent results in general, there are still some uncertainties related to the procedure, such as development of an anterior open bite (AOB) during mandibular distraction. The aim of this study was to examine whether 'moulding of the generate', i.e. use of intermaxillary elastics during the active distraction phase is possible to close the mandibular plane angle and open bite. Three subjects, 13- and 15-year-old males and a 7-year-old fe

Complicated crown-root fractures in permanent teeth present both patient-centred and restorative problems when treating the adolescent. This case highlights an alternative and conservative technique for the management of a traumatically involved maxillary left central incisor in a 12-year-old boy. The injury was successfully managed through an interdisciplinary approach using a combination of endodontics, minor oral surgery and orthodontics. The approach resulted in utilizing the patient's own tooth fragment to facilitate restoration back into successful function and aesthetics with the absenc

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the reasons for failure of orthodontic treatment for impacted maxillary canines and to recommend measures to overcome them.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients (ages, 17.4 +/- 4.3 years) with 37 maxillary impacted canines were referred after a failed attempt to resolve the impaction. Reasons for failure were analyzed, and corrective measures undertaken. The success rate of the revised treatments and the durations of both treatments were recorded.
RESULTS: The mean duration of the failed treatments was 26.2 +/- 17.2 months. The failed treatments we

Tooth autotransplantation is one of the methods used for tooth loss rehabilitation in children. Premolars are usually used as autotransplants requiring esthetic alterations. The purpose of this paper is to present an innovative, alternative and inexpensive way to restore auto-transplanted teeth using the crown of the tooth of the recipient site. A seven-year-old male with a non-contributory medical history presented with an intrusion of his permanent maxillary right central incisor. The tooth underwent orthodontic extrusion using fixed appliances but eventually showed signs of ankylosis. At 10…

Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is an autosomal disease that occurs in approximately 0.06% of the population and is defined as the malfunction of dental eruptive mechanisms with delay and absence of these processes in a non-ankylosed tooth. Treatment options for patients with eruptive delays range from prosthetic to surgical interventions. Although this condition is relatively rare, the occurrence of eruptive disorders in clinical dental practice is becoming more frequent. Correct diagnosis of this eruptive anomaly plays an essential role in treatment planning. The aim of this case report wa

Traumatic intrusion injury of permanent teeth is serious with multiple complications possible associated with the pulp, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and Hertwig's epithelial root sheath. The optimal treatment for the management of an intrusion injury has not yet been determined. A case is presented involving the conservative management of an immature maxillary permanent central incisor intrusively luxated by allowing for re-eruption and orthodontic extrusion two weeks later. After a follow-up period of ten months, the intruded tooth continued to show a mobility of grade one, without met…

To achieve optimum occlusal and facial results in a patient with high-angle maxillary protrusion, it is important to move Point A back with retraction of the anterior teeth and prevent clockwise rotation of the mandible through good vertical control. A woman, aged 42 years 5 months, with a protrusive profile sought lingual orthodontic treatment. She had a skeletal Class II high-angle pattern with maxillary protrusion and mandibular retrusion. The extraction of the 4 first premolars was indicated to correct the problems. The vertical bowing effect, a side effect known to occur with conventional
