From an orthodontic point of view, asymmetries can be gathered in three great clinical entities: mandibular lateral deviations, dental asymmetries without skeletal involvement, skeletal asymmetries. Once the therapeutic aims and the principles of the orthodontic approach of these dysmorphoses have been recalled, the authors present the various orthodontic means implemented in this type of treatment. Four cases treated illustrate those types of treatment. Vertical non-surgical asymmetry may have an obvious local origin, for instance, a unilateral damage to a nerve. but usually, there is no evid

Early orthodontic treatment will not resolve all potential orthodontic problems or totally inhibit adverse skeletal growth patterns. However, by identifying problems at an early age it is possible to redirect skeletal growth; improve the occlusal relationship; enhance the patient's esthetics and self-image and, perhaps of even greater importance, achieve results that are unattainable later with the eruption of teeth and the cessation of growth.

Several preventive procedures are recommended for the interception of early malocclusion. Therefore some important characteristics of normal dental development are mentioned. This preventive approach is focused around selected topics as forced bite, midline diastema and retarded eruption. This influence of functional disturbances on dentofacial morphology is discussed. An overview of possible therapy by the general dentist is presented for problems, aroused by thumb- and fingersucking, agenesis of upper lateral and mandibular second premolars as well as early loss of deciduous molars. Finally,

A particular characteristic of dentomaxillary dysharmony, probably the most frequently encountered anomaly in dentofacial orthopedic practice, is often the result of the presence of physiologic facial asymmetry. Attention is drawn to a syndrome, which could be thought to be paradoxical, and which associates facial asymmetry affecting the left side and dentomaxillary dysharmony that is curiously more marked on this same side.

The purpose of this study was to verify whether pre-treatment digital setups can accurately predict the tooth positions after presurgical orthodontic treatment has been performed in a 3-dimensional way. Twenty-six patients who underwent a combined orthodontic-orthognathic surgical treatment were included. Pre-treatment digital dental models were merged with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. One operator fabricated virtual setups to simulate the tooth movements of the presurgical orthodontic treatment. Prior to surgery, digital dental models were merged with the CBCT scans. Difference

The abnormal tooth arrangement is one of the most common clinical features of malocclusion which is mainly caused by the tooth root compression malformation. The second sequential loop is mostly used for the adjusting of the abnormal tooth arrangement. Now, the shape devise of orthodontic archwire depends completely on the doctor's experience and patients' feedback, this practice is time-consuming, and the treatment effect is unstable. The orthodontic-force of the different parameters of the second sequence loop, including different cross-sectional parameters, material parameters, and characte

INTRODUCTION: Even though the beneficial effects of fluoride on enamel and root caries have been well documented, limited data are available concerning the effect of fluoride on orthodontically induced root resorption and tooth movement. Our objective was to investigate the effect of systemic fluoride administered from birth to 12 weeks on orthodontically induced root resorption and tooth movement in rat molars.
METHODS: Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups. The negative control group received no sodium fluoride and had no tooth movement. The positive control group recei

Dental fluorosis, a developmental condition that affects amelogenesis, may present in various forms depending on the concentration and timing of fluoride ingested during enamel formation. In this article, the present authors discuss the case of a patient who presented with fluorosis, gingival asymmetry, and malocclusion, including a lingually positioned maxillary left canine (tooth 23) and inadequate exposure of the coronal aspect of the maxillary premolars. The interdisciplinary treatment plan included accelerated orthodontics, crown lengthening, and porcelain veneers. The first step was a co…

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession defects (GRDs) pose functional and esthetic concerns and may be associated with unfavorable tooth positions. Surgically facilitated orthodontic treatment (SFOT) with clear aligners can be a valuable option for adults with severe malocclusion and GRDs.
METHODS: A 28-year-old male presented with severe dental crowding, Class III dental malocclusion, localized tooth crossbites, and tapered maxillary arch. He exhibited multiple gingival recessions type I up to 6 mm in depth, at least 2 mm of keratinized tissue throughout, and a thick scalloped gingival phenotype. Cl

Compared with teenage patients, adult patients generally show a slower rate of tooth movement and more pronounced alveolar bone loss during orthodontic treatment, indicating the maladaptation of alveolar bone homeostasis under orthodontic force. However, this phenomenon is not well-elucidated to date, leading to increased treatment difficulties and unsatisfactory treatment outcomes in adult orthodontics. Aiming to provide a comprehensive knowledge and further inspire insightful understanding towards this issue, this review summarizes the current evidence and underlying mechanisms. The age-rela…
