Amelogenesis imperfecta refers to a group of hereditary diseases that affect dental enamel, often leading to a wide range of clinical manifestations and aesthetic concerns. This case report describes a female patient diagnosed with amelogenesis imperfecta associated with a skeletal open bite. The treatment approach was multidisciplinary. Periodontal therapy was initiated, followed by orthodontic treatment using brackets on temporary crowns to expand and coordinate the maxillary and mandibular arches. Subsequently, orthognathic surgery, including a LeFort I osteotomy and genioplasty, was perfor

PURPOSE: Ideal treatment timing in orthodontics is controversially discussed depending on the type and extent of the dysgnathia and malocclusion present, especially with regard to efficiency, patient burden and treatment efforts of early compared to regular or late treatment. This German clinical practice guideline aims to clarify, at which time points an orthodontic anomaly can be effectively treated and how treatment efficiency differs depending on treatment timing.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in various guideline databases and databases PROSPERO, MEDLINE (PubMed),

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to assess the available evidence for the effects of orthodontic treatment with 4 premolar extractions on the skeletal vertical dimension of the face compared with nonextraction treatment.
METHODS: Electronic database searches (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register, and CENTRAL) of published and unpublished literature and hand searches of eligible studies were performed, with no language or publication date restrictions. Two authors performed data extraction independently and in duplicate. Risk of bias was assessed.
RESULTS: After application

This article explores the long-standing controversy between orthodontics and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). It reviews the history of this controversy and presents a discussion of the current literature concerning the potential role of malocclusion in the onset of TMDs. It also explores the potential role of orthodontic treatment as a possible cure for TMDs and concludes, based on the most current evidence-based literature, that there is no relationship.

BACKGROUND: Permanent canines are amongst the teeth most affected by impaction and ectopic eruption. Although impacted canines are often subjected to surgical exposure and alignment with either the open or the closed technique for many decades, their treatment effects have not yet been systematically asssessed.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to critically assess whether significant differences exist in the outcomes of the open or closed surgical exposure of impacted canines.
SEARCH METHODS: An unrestricted electronic search of nine databases from inception to December 2016

Facial duplication, in whole or in part, is a very rare malformation. It may be symmetrical or asymmetric. Those cases that have been reported in the literature constitute a spectrum extending from simple nasal duplication to complete separation of 2 faces. Up to now there are some reports of eye, nose, mandible, or maxilla duplication separately. But there is no report of oral orifice or lips duplication. The present article reports a case of a newborn girl who presented with 2 mouths and also duplication of zygoma and maxilla. Then, we describe her stages of treatment from birth through now

"Surgery-First" for patients with malocclusion and skeletal disharmony is a new process of employing bony corrective surgery (first) without removal of dental compensations followed by orthodontic finishing (second). This process breaks with the time-tested principles of traditional orthognathic surgery. Not unexpectedly, there is slow adoption of this new process, particularly in the West. Ten frequently asked questions regarding Surgery First are asked and answered in this report in an attempt to provide an increased level of comfort for Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgeons in instituting this

The Cochrane Oral Health Group withdrew this review as of Issue 1, 2016. The review is out of date and does not meet current Cochrane methodological standards. It will be superseded by a new Cochrane review on Occlusal interventions for managing temporomandibular disorders. The editorial group responsible for this previously published document have withdrawn it from publication.

The question of final-phase treatment and prosthetic rehabilitation is posed for the young adult patient who has followed a program of surgical, orthopedic, and orthodontic work aimed at achieving a functional, aesthetic balance. When a toothless space has been maintained or recreated between the proximal teeth of each fragment, two solutions are at hand for the expert odontologist: implantology, or traditional joint prosthesis. Four problems are evoked here to describe the difficulties related to this therapeutic decision: confrontation of the banks, residual osseous defect, teeth bordering t

To perform a systematic review on the effect of changes in incisor inclination owing to orthodontic treatment and the occurrence of gingival recession. PubMed, EMBASE Excerpta Medica and CENTRAL of the Cochrane Library were searched and a hand search was performed. From 1925 articles identified, 17 articles were finally included: six experimental animal studies and 11 retrospective clinical studies in humans. More proclined teeth compared with less proclined teeth or untreated teeth had in most studies a higher occurrence or severity of gingival recession. Contradictory results were found rega

Fused/geminated teeth may cause esthetic, spacing, periodontal, eruption and caries problems. The present study describes two clinical cases of similar dental fusion and compromises different and individualized treatment methods based on the proper treatment needs of a patient. In the first case the fused tooth was separated and the supernumerary tooth was extracted intraorally. In the second case, due to the union structure of a fused tooth up to the apex, extraction and extraoral separation was considered a better alternative than the separation of the fused tooth intraorally.
