Until recently, obstructive sleep apnoea was a largely unknown condition. Because of the well-publicised death of some high-profile people resulting from untreated obstructive sleep apnoea, now mostly everyone has heard of the condition. Following diagnosis, several medical treatment modalities are available to patients. However, the role that dentistry and its various specialties can play in successful treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea should not be overlooked. The common causes for adult and paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea will be presented as well as a review of the more successful

The effect of the removal of deciduous canines on palatally displaced maxillary canines was assessed and factors contributing to a successful outcome were analysed. Thirty-nine consecutive patients of mean age 11.2 years (standard deviation 1.43), with 47 palatally displaced canines were included in the study. The cases were examined clinically and radiographically for a maximum period of 2 years following deciduous canine removal. Twenty-nine (62 per cent) of the 47 ectopic canines achieved a normal eruptive position and nine (19 per cent) showed some improvement in eruptive position. The out

OBJECTIVES: Functional orthodontic devices can modify oral function thus permitting more adequate growth processes. The assessment of their effects should include both facial morphology and muscle function. This preliminary study investigated whether a preformed functional orthodontic device could induce variations in facial morphology and function along with correction of oral dysfunction in a group of orthodontic patients in the mixed and early permanent dentitions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The three-dimensional coordinates of 50 facial landmarks (forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks, mouth, jaw and e

UNLABELLED: Posterior scissors bite is a clinically common severe malocclusion, which often leads to impaired masticatory function, unilateral mastication habit and progressive facial asymmetry. This case report presented an 8-year-old boy with severe unilateral posterior scissors bite in mixed dentition, who received early interceptive orthodontic treatment with bracket-free clear aligners combined with alternating intermaxillary traction. The treatment procedures included staged expansion of dental arch width, uprighting of severely lingually inclined molars, and complete correction of poste

BACKGROUND: Reverse headgear (a facial mask) is one of the most frequently used interceptive orthodontic devices in patients with Class III malocclusion. It is a simple device but may present some drawbacks related to pressure on the skin generated by the forehead and chin supports linked to the maxillary intraoral appliance by elastics. This can cause injury to the chin and lips.
METHODS: Patients between 7 and 8 years of age were selected from the Unit of Pediatric Dentistry. Orthopedic therapy with a rapid palatal expander and reverse headgear was prescribed for all subjects. The patients

BACKGROUND: Functional appliances have been used since many decades for the correction of mandibular retrognathism. Similar oral appliances are a treatment modality for patients with Obstructive sleep apnoea. Hence, interception at the right age with these growth modification appliances might benefit a child from developing long-term respiratory insufficiency. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to assess the short-term effects of Twin block appliance (CTB) on pharyngeal airway size in subjects with skeletal Class-II pattern in a sample of Pakistani population.
METHODS: A retrospective st

The associations between tooth and eruption disturbances in four groups of children selected primarily with only one diagnosed eruption or developmental disturbance in each group was analysed. Ninety-two children were primarily diagnosed with ectopic eruption of maxillary first permanent molars, 93 children with infra-occlusion and ankylosis of primary molars, 91 children with ectopic eruption of maxillary canines, and 97 children with aplasia of premolars. Of the children studied 69-79 per cent had only a single one of the four disturbances studied. In 18-28 per cent there was one additional

BACKGROUND: Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic disorder characterized by increased bone density due to defective osteoclast function. Its clinical presentation varies according to subtype, and oral manifestations are frequent, potentially serving as early indicators of the disease. These findings place the pediatric dentist in a key role for early recognition and safe dental management.
CASE: This case report describes the comprehensive dental management of a 7-year-old girl with a history of infantile osteopetrosis treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation during early infancy. The p

We report a case involving a young female patient with severe mandibular retrognathism accompanied by mandibular condylar deformity that was effectively treated with Le Fort I osteotomy and two genioplasty procedures. At 9 years and 9 months of age, she was diagnosed with Angle Class III malocclusion, a skeletal Class II jaw relationship, an anterior crossbite, congenital absence of some teeth, and a left-sided cleft lip and palate. Although the anterior crossbite and narrow maxillary arch were corrected by interceptive orthodontic treatment, severe mandibular hypogrowth resulted in unexpected

BACKGROUND: Maxillary canines are the most frequently impacted teeth after the third molars, with an incidence of 0.9%-2.2% where females are 2-3 times more affected. The various causes include local, systemic, and genetic factors. To prevent complications, early prediction and age-appropriate intervention are crucial for initiating timely interceptive orthodontic treatment, thereby reducing treatment duration and cost.
AIM: To validate the modified Erickson's and Kuroll's method in predicting the prevalence of canine impaction in children aged 14-18 years.
