[Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome in two generations imitated Calvé-Legg-Perthes disease].

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome is a rare condition characterized by skin manifestations and osteopoikilosis. We describe a mother and her son who presented with indurated skin lesions suggestive of connective tissue naevi. X-rays showed multiple symmetrical foci of osteosclerosis. They had both been diagnosed earlier with Calvé-Legg-Perthes disease, which on revision most likely represented Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome. Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome may imitate Calvé-Legg-Perthes disease. Skin signs may be the clue to diagnosis. Main differentials are sclerotic bone metastases and osteoma.

Dacryocystorhinostomy in osteopetrosis.

Osteopetrosis is a rare congenital disorder of bone metabolism characterized by generalized sclerotic bone resulting from osteoclast dysfunction. There are several ocular manifestations, one of which is nasolacrimal duct obstruction from osteosclerosis of the nasolacrimal foramen. The surgeon must anticipate and prepare for the difficulties of working with marbleized, ultra-dense bone, alternating technique accordingly. In nasolacrimal duct obstruction, surgical management produces seemingly stable long-term results. However, if ossification recurs at the operative site, reoperation may become…

Erdheim-Chester disease.

A new case of Erdheim-Chester lipoid granulomatosis is described in a 40-year-old man. In this lipid storage disease, characteristic symmetrical osteosclerotic areas are observed mainly in metadiaphyses of long tubular bones. Bone biopsy is mandatory for definite diagnosis, although characteristic radiographic pictures often provide an important clue to the correct diagnosis.

Linear melorheostotic scleroderma with hypertrichosis.

On the basis of clinical features and histological findings, cutaneous manifestations of linear melorheostotic scleroderma are apparently derived from a localized proliferative disorder and are not secondary to bone changes. If the hypertrichosis has the same origin as the osteocutaneous changes, melorheostosis may represent a congenital disorder with both ectodermic and mesodermic components.

Feasibility of administration of calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonist on attenuation of pain and progression in osteoarthritis.

Suppressing inflammation and abnormal subchondral bone turnover is essential for reducing osteoarthritis (OA) progression and pain relief. T … t ganglion (DRG) were conducted to assess pain. In DMM mice, synovitis, cartilage degeneration, and osteosclerosis were significantly suppressed in the rimegepant group. In SAMP8, synovitis, cartilage degeneration, and osteosclerosis were significantly suppressed by rimegepant at 9 weeks; however, not at 23 weeks. Behavioral assessment shows the traveled distanc …

Variability of systemic and oro-dental phenotype in two families with non-lethal Raine syndrome with FAM20C mutations.

BACKGROUND: Raine syndrome (RS) is a rare autosomal recessive bone dysplasia typified by osteosclerosis and dysmorphic facies due to FAM20C mutations. Initially reported as lethal in infancy, survival is possible into adulthood. We describe the molecular analysis and clinical phenotypes of five individuals from two consanguineous Brazilian families with attenuated Raine Syndrome with previously unreported features. METHODS: The medical and dental clinical records were reviewed. Extracted deciduous and permanent teeth as well as oral soft tissues were analysed. Whole exome sequencing was under…

Persistent Neonatal Hypocalcemia as an Early Clue to TCIRG1-Related Infantile Osteopetrosis in an Infant of a Diabetic Mother: A Case Report.

Infantile malignant osteopetrosis is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal disorder caused by impaired osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, resulting in diffuse osteosclerosis, bone marrow failure, neurologic complications, and metabolic disturbances. Early diagnosis remains challenging, particularly when initial manifestations overlap with common neonatal conditions. Persistent neonatal hypocalcemia may be an early but underrecognized clue. We report a Saudi male infant with genetically confirmed TCIRG1-associated osteopetrosis who presented with persistent neonatal hypocalcemia and secondary h…

How does the clinical and tomographic appearance of MRONJ influences its treatment prognosis?

OBJECTIVES: To identify clinical and tomographic prognostic factors for conservative and surgical treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). METHODS: A retrospective search identified patients treated with antiresorptive drugs (ARDs), diagnosed with Stage 1, 2 or 3 MRONJ, and having CBCT scans previous to conservative or surgical treatment. Following data collection, imaging assessment of the following parameters on each MRONJ site was performed: involvement of teeth and/or implants, presence of osteosclerosis, osteolysis, sequestrum formation, periosteal reaction, and…

A preliminary clinical study of segmental mandibulectomy on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Recently, many reports have recommended surgical treatment for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Howe … computed tomography (CT) showed osteolytic lesions in 13/13, periosteal reaction (PR) in 12/13, and osteosclerosis in 12/13 cases of segmental mandibulectomy. On postoperative CT, no residual osteolytic lesion and PR were noted, and 9 cases showed osteosclerosis. Twelve patients (92.3%) undergoing segmental mandibulectomy had complete healing, whereas the cure r …

A Rare Cause of Hypophosphatemia: Raine Syndrome Changing Clinical Features with Age.

Raine Syndrome (RS) is caused by biallelic loss-of-function mutations in FAM20C gene and characterized by hypophosphatemia, typical facial and skeletal features. Subperiosteal bone formation and generalized osteosclerosis are the most common radiological findings. Here we present a new case with RS. A 9-month-old male patient on a home-type ventilator was referred for hypophosphatemia. He was born with a weight of 3800 g to non-consanguineous parents. Prenatal ultrasound had demonstrated nasal bone agenesis. A large anterior fontanel, frontal bossing, exophthalmos, hypoplastic nose, high arche…

[Cervicogenic dysphagia: a case report].

The article presents a case of pharyngeal dysphagia and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome caused by degenerative-dystrophic changes in the cervical spine with the formation of large cervical osteophytes at the C3-C6 level. Osteophytes caused deformation of the posterior wall of the hypopharynx and narrowing of its lumen by 20-25% from the level of the arytenoid cartilages to the upper parts of the epiglottis. CT scan also showed the intervertebral disc heights lost, as well as osteophytes at the posterolateral margins of the vertebral bodies (disc osteophyte complex). Osteosclerosis in combinat…
