Patient-reported outcome measures for pain in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: A systematic review.

Pain is a common symptom in people with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), but it is assessed and reported inconsistently in research, and the validity of the measures remain uncertain. The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics, content, and psychometric properties of measures for pain used in ADPKD. We conducted a systematic review including all trials and observational studies that reported pain in people with ADPKD. Items from all measures were categorized into content and measurement dimensions of pain. We assessed the general characteristics and psychome

Exploration of Functional Connectivity Changes Previously Reported in Fibromyalgia and Their Relation to Psychological Distress and Pain Measures.

Neural functional connectivity changes in the default mode network (DMN), Central executive network (CEN), and insula have been implicated in fibromyalgia (FM) but stem from a sparse set of small-scale studies with limited power for the investigation of confounding effects. We investigated whether anxiety, depression, pain sensitivity, and pain intensity modulated functional connectivity related to DMN nodes, CEN nodes, and insula. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 31 females with FM and 28 age-matched healthy controls. Connectivity was analysed with

The "comfortable dying" measure: how patient characteristics affect hospice pain management quality scores.

BACKGROUND: All hospices were required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to collect the "Comfortable Dying" measure in 2012 (National Quality Forum measure #0209). However, it is not known how scores on this measure are affected by patient characteristics. It is important to identify these characteristics so that a hospice's case mix can be taken into account when interpreting its scores. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to describe the implementation of the NQF #0209 measure in 10 hospices and to identify patient characteristics associated with scores. METHODS: We conducted an e

Evaluation of a flexible ruler technique for measuring lumbar lordosis in the clinical assessment of low back pain.

This preliminary study was designed to evaluate a possible objective technique for the clinical measurement of spinal mobility using a flexible ruler. Thirty-one manual workers employed by British Steel Corporation suffering from low back pain were examined using this technique. The results were compared with those obtained from a matching group of workers who did not suffer from low back pain. The technique proved to be simple, accurate and highly reproducible as a clinical tool in the measurement of spinal mobility. A comparison of the observed spinal profile measurements demonstrated a sign

The Accuracy of Pain Measurement in Diagnosis of Scaphoid Bone Fractures in Patients with Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Report of 175 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Scaphoid fracture is the most common fracture among the bones of the wrist. Plain radiography has a sensitivity of 59 to 79 percent for the diagnosis of scaphoid fracture after injury. Casting is done to avoid complications in patients with suspected fractures with normal radiography. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99%. To avoid unnecessary casting and high costs, we decided to offer a way more efficient than radiography and less costly than MRI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the present study, 175 patients with suspected scaphoid frac

Test-retest reliability and measurement error of the numerical rating scale and visual analogue scale in people with low back pain.

The 0-10 numerical rating scale (NRS) and 0-100 visual analogue scale (VAS) are commonly used to assess pain intensity in low back pain (LBP) trials, but their measurement properties remain unclear. AIMS: We aimed to determine the reliability and measurement error of the NRS and VAS in non-specific LBP. We used a test-retest design with online questionnaire administration. Adults proficient in English with acute (<6 weeks), subacute (6-12 weeks), or chronic (>3 months) non-specific LBP were recruited. Pain intensities were recorded using the NRS and VAS at baseline, as well as 20 min and 24 h

B-scan ultrasonic measurement of the lumbar spinal canal as a predictor of industrial back pain complaints and extended work loss.

B-scan ultrasonic measurements of lumbar spinal canal diameter were examined as predictors of industrial back pain complaints and extended work loss. Baseline data were collected on 3,020 Washington State aircraft manufacturing workers, and over a mean 3.7-year follow-up period 352 subjects reported industrial back pain complaints. Mean canal measurements of subjects with industrial back pain complaints were smaller at all spinal levels than in subjects without complaints. The mean differences between the groups, however, were extremely small (0.07 mm to 0.51 mm), and not all levels were stati
