Dental arch relationship in children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate following one-stage and three-stage surgical protocols.

The objective of this study is to compare dental arch relationship following one-stage and three-stage surgical protocols of unilateral cleft lip and palate. Dental casts of 61 children (mean age, 11.2 years; SD, 1.7), consecutively treated in one center with one-stage closure of the complete cleft at 9.2 months (SD, 2.0), were compared with a sample of 97 patients (mean age, 8.7 years; SD, 0.9), consecutively treated with a three-stage protocol including delayed hard palate closure in another center. The dental casts were assigned random numbers to blind their origin. Four raters graded denta

Re-eruption of an intruded immature permanent incisor with necrotic pulp: a case report.

Intrusive luxation is a serious dental injury that causes damage to the pulp and supporting structures of a tooth because of its dislocation into the alveolar process. This paper presents the case of the re-eruption of a severely intruded immature permanent incisor with a crown-root fracture. A 9-year-old boy was referred to the clinic 1 day after a fall. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed intrusive luxation of the immature left permanent incisor and a crown-root fracture without pulp exposure. Palatal gingivectomy was done 2 weeks later to facilitate re-eruption. Root canal thera

Surgical treatment is warranted in aggressive central giant cell granuloma: a report of 2 cases.

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign but locally destructive lesion of the mandible or maxilla that presents most often in the second and third decades of life. Reports of treatment include curettage or complete en bloc resection and nonsurgical approaches such as intralesional steroid injections, interferon alfa-2a, and calcitonin. We describe the cases of 2 young adults with CGCG of the maxilla involving the palate. The first patient, an 18-year-old man, was initially treated with a partial maxillectomy via a facial degloving approach and a postoperative series of transoral intral

Bland-Altman analysis of maxillary obturator bulb accuracy in class III Brown classification maxillectomy defects.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Maxillofacial tumor resection leads to major functional and esthetic issues that adversely affect patients' quality of life. Obturators have been used to manage issues such as hypernasality and fluid leakage. However, their adaptation to maxillary defects and patient comfort requires further study. Understanding how material composition influences obturator retention, durability, and long-term satisfaction is essential for optimizing prosthetic design. PURPOSE: The purpose of this nonrandomized, self-controlled study was to compare the accuracy and patient satisfaction o

A model of practice for the management of velopharyngeal dysfunction.

This paper reviews normal speech production, the speech characteristics associated with velopharyngeal dysfunction, the investigations required and treatment options. A model of service delivery is proposed which has been in place over the past 4 years. This model highlights multidisciplinary management by a specialist team. An audit of the service has been undertaken. Of the 225 patients audited, some interesting findings are presented on aetiology, diagnosis and trends in management. Systematic and comprehensive collection of data on large numbers of patients permits meaningful audit of proc

Tumors of the paranasal sinuses: a therapeutic challenge.

Cancer involving the ethmoid and sphenoid frontal sinus complex can be successfully eradicated by a combined transcranial and transfacial surgical dissection. Survival rates of 44 to 58 percent with a 3 percent hospital mortality rate in patients whose previous surgery or radiotherapy was largely unsuccessful suggest that this cosmetically acceptable surgical endeavor should be used more often by the head and neck surgeon in treating paranasal sinus cancer. Utilizing the principles of antibiotic prophylaxis, strict attention to principles of tumor removal and surgical technique, and the talent

Long-Term Comparison of the Aesthetic Outcomes between Nasoalveolar Molding- and Non-Nasoalveolar Molding-Treated Patients with Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: The cleft lip-nose deformity in unilateral cleft lip and palate is one of the most challenging problem for surgeons to correct. Although nasoalveolar molding has been shown to be effective in improving presurgical symmetry in patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate, there is need for better evidence regarding the long-term nasolabial aesthetics of patients who have received this therapy. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients treated with nasoalveolar molding and 48 patients not treated with nasoalveolar molding (but otherwise treated similarly) with unilateral cleft lip an

[Treatment of patients with breathing disturbances during sleep in the II ENT Department Silesian Medical University Zabrze].

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome comprises preventive behavior, conservative methods (CPAP) and surgical treatment. In the diagnostics procedures the most important aim is to determinate whether the patient is an habitual snorer or OSA patient. Very important thing is also patient's qualification for proper mode of treatment. The aim of the surgical treatment is to remove all the reasons that obturate the upper airways and cause the increasing of respiratory air stream resistance. The most collapsible airway region during sleep is oropharynx involves

Management of a Complex Crown-Root Fracture in a Single Appointment Through Root Canal Therapy and Rebonding.

A 10-year-old male presented with a mobile and fractured maxillary right central incisor following dental trauma. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed a chisel-type crown-root fracture with supragingival labial and subgingival palatal extensions. A direct crown reattachment was planned, emphasizing biological width preservation. After removing the coronal fragment, endodontic treatment was performed using a rotary file system and was obturated with a bioceramic sealer. A fiber post was selected and integrated into the fractured fragment, which was reattached using resin cement. Addi

Osteoradionecrosis Following Carbon Ion Radiotherapy: Case History Report of a Soft Palate Defect.

Carbon ion radiotherapy, a form of charged particle radiotherapy that has been used to treat various inoperable and radio-resistant tumors, has been associated with less severe late effects than conventional radiotherapy. A 63-year-old woman with a soft palate defect received carbon ion radiotherapy (total dose: 64 Gray equivalents). Several late effects were observed, and osteoradionecrosis was observed not only on the tumor side but also on the other side and gradually expanded during maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation. While the definitive prosthesis improved her speech and eating abil

Significant improvement in temporary dental rehabilitation by notable miniplate application in the hard palate for a patient with a large anterior maxillary defect: a case report/technique article.

UNLABELLED: The present report describes the application of a miniplate in the hard palate of a 36-year-old patient with a large anterior maxillary defect. The combination of orthodontic elastics with a titanium miniplate improved the stability of the prefabricated prosthesis. This structure retained the ointment gauze covering the wounds and maintained the facial contour. In addition, contracture deformity was prevented by insertion of the prefabricated prosthesis intraoperatively or immediately postoperatively. Furthermore, a soft diet could be ingested immediately postoperatively. The minip

Angiocentric T-cell lymphoma presenting as midface destructive lesion: case report and literature review.

A case of angiocentric T-cell lymphoma presenting as a midface destructive lesion is reported. Angiocentric T-cell lymphoma typically manifests as an aggressive, progressively destructive, and necrotizing disorder, often with a fatal outcome. This case was characterized microscopically by the presence of an atypical lymphoid population that expressed a CD45+, CD3+ cytoplasmic, CD5+, and CD56- T-cell phenotype within a background of a polymorphous inflammatory infiltrate. Because of the rarity of the disorder, the differential diagnosis is discussed. Recent advances in clinical immunodiagnostic

Nonsurgical Endodontic Retreatment of a Large Cyst-Like Periapical Lesion With Buccal and Palatal Cortical Plate Perforations and Maxillary Sinus Involvement: A 2-Year CBCT Follow-Up Case Report.

Large cyst-like periapical radiolucencies with cortical perforations are traditionally managed surgically. However, nonsurgical retreatment may be effective when adequate disinfection and seal are achieved. This case report describes the management of a large maxillary periapical lesion involving five endodontically treated teeth (from 21 to 25), associated with buccal and palatal cortical perforations and maxillary sinus involvement. Nonsurgical retreatment using enhanced disinfection and obturation with a hydraulic calcium-silicate sealer was performed. Successfully establishing patency was
