The overlooked bacterial pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant economic and health impact worldwide. It also reinforced the misperception that only viruses can pose a threat to human existence, overlooking that bacteria (e.g., plague and cholera) have severely haunted and shaped the course of human civilization. While the world is preparing for the next viral pandemic, it is again overlooking a silent one: antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This review proposes to show the impact of bacterial infections on civilization to remind the pandemic potential. The work will also discuss a few examples of how bacteria can mutat

[Monkeypox, a new pandemic?].

Monkeypox (MPX) is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It is a viral zoonotic disease, endemic in Central and West Africa. Human-to-human spread also occurs and is a feature of the current global outbreak. As far as we know, exponential transmission during this outbreak is not related to changed viral characteristics but due to multiple high-risk contacts in a subset of people that have contracted the virus, so far almost exclusively affecting men who have sex with men (MSM). Appropriate public health measures and increased alertness of all health care providers is needed to increase case

Obstetric simulation for a pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, guidelines and recommendations are rapidly evolving. Providers strive to provide safe high-quality care for their patients in the already high-risk specialty of Obstetrics while also considering the risk that this virus adds to their patients and themselves. From other pandemics, evidence exists that simulation is the most effective way to prepare teams, build understanding and confidence, and increase patient and provider safety. FINDING: Practicing in-situ multidisciplinary simulations in the hospital setting has illustrated key opportuniti…

[Influenza: waiting for pandemic].

Pandemic flu is a sudden invasive infection, caused by the diffusion to humans of a viral strain characterized by the presence of one or more new surface proteins. Pandemic influenza prevention is among health priorities for WHO, that introduced a world surveillance programme and published Guidelines for preparing national pandemic plans. Following Guidelines, Italy prepared a plan considering human and veterinary health activities, among which the use of vaccines and antiviral drugs, and informative and formative projects.

Scabies, a current pandemic.

Scabies, caused by the itch mite and transmitted by skin-to-skin contact, is being seen in pandemic proportion. In the United States this infestation is seen in patients of all ages and socioeconomic levels. Scabies is often misdiagnosed, and the classic form occurs less frequently in the current cycle. Differential diagnosis includes most pruritic dermatoses. Diagnosis should be made with certainity, preferably by identification of the mite, before therapy is begun. Modern scabicides are high effective.

Higher mortality in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation patients during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with H1N1 influenza: implications for future pandemics.

BACKGROUND: Veno-venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (V-V ECMO) in management of refractory respiratory failure due to viral respiratory infections has increased with recent pandemics. AIMS: The aim was to compare clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients requiring ECMO support during an evolving pandemic with COVID-19, with patients during the H1N1-influenza pandemic and subsequent seasonal epidemics, where adjunct therapy and vaccination was available. METHODS: Medical records of inpatients at an ECMO referral centre diagnosed with COVID-19 between March 2020 and October 202…

Innovative survival modeling in pandemics with a novel family of distributions: a comparative study of UK and Mexico pandemic data.

Statistical approaches have broad applications in almost all areas of life, especially education, hydrology, reliability, administration, and healthcare. Statistical investigation and data forecasting are critical components of medical decision-making and outcome improvement. This article introduces an innovative generator based on the inverted trigonometric function, especially the Arccosecant Φ family of distributions, with the Burr distribution as the foundation model. This technique establishes the distributional features and adaptability of the Arccosecant-Burr distribution (for reference

Disparate viral pandemics from COVID19 to monkeypox and beyond: a simple, effective and universal therapeutic approach hiding in plain sight.

The field of antiviral therapeutics is fixated on COVID19 and rightly so as the fatalities at the height of the pandemic in the United States were almost 1,000,000 in a twelve month period spanning parts of 2020/2021. A coronavirus called SARS-CoV2 is the causative virus. Development of a vaccine through molecular biology approaches with mRNA as the inducer of virus spike protein has played a major role in driving down mortality and morbidity. Antivirals have been of marginal value in established infections at the level of hospitalization. Thus, the current focus is on early symptomatic infect

Preventive Measures against Pandemics from the Beginning of Civilization to Nowadays-How Everything Has Remained the Same over the Millennia.

As of 27 March 2022, the β-coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected more than 487 million individuals worldwide, causing more than 6.14 million deaths. SARS-CoV-2 spreads through close contact, causing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); thus, emergency lockdowns have been implemented worldwide to avoid its spread. COVID-19 is not the first infectious disease that humankind has had to face during its history. Indeed, humans have recurrently been threatened by several emerging pathogens that killed a substantial fraction of the population. Histo

Vulnerabilities in pandemic responses.

The next pandemic will likely be caused by a respiratory virus, due to the presence of many such viruses at the human-animal interface, their high rate of mutation (most being RNA viruses), and their high transmissibility. Despite the experience of the last pandemic, some problems will always be present when large populations encounter a novel respiratory virus for the first time.

Teachings from the Pandemic.

The COVID-19 disease, presenting with complex immune dysregulation and leading to life-threatening organ dysfunction, represents a paradigm of viral sepsis. As heterogeneity of clinical presentation is contained in COVID-19 (one pathogen, one source of infection) related to bacterial sepsis, and due to the urgency of the pandemic for immediate responsive research networks, many trials have been conducted providing beneficial patient outcomes and changing the natural course of disease. In this review, we summarize lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic related to immunotherapy, management of

Otolaryngology in the face of A pandemic.

Although infrequent, pandemics are serious public health concerns with unpredictable courses. The COVID-19 pandemic began over 2 years ago and is far from over. This pandemic has spread rapidly throughout the world and led to several million deaths, making it commonly compared to the deadly Spanish influenza pandemic. Policy and safety measures are constantly being adapted to reduce transmission rates. The pandemic places stress on all healthcare workers, but especially otolaryngology providers due to their direct contact with airway connected cavities. This puts them at high risk for infectio…
