[Mitral valve prolapse and autonomic activity in normal women].

We examined relationships between mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and circadian rhythm of autonomic activity using spectral analysis of heart rate variability and echocardiography in 31 normal women. The heart rate variability was calculated from 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiogram by Fourier transformation. The power spectra were quantified at 0.04-0.15 Hz (low frequency power (LF) 1n (ms2)) and 0.15-0.40 Hz (high frequency power (HF) 1n (ms2)). The HF component and the ratio of LF/HF were used as indices of parasympathetic and sympathetic activity, respectively. MVP was present in 22.6%. There

Sympathetic--parasympathetic interaction and sudden death.

The effects of the autonomic nervous system on malignant arrhythmias, particularly in the setting of ischemic heart disease, have been widely investigated and described. Specifically, it has been shown that while sympathetic hyperactivity is arrhythmogenic, an increased vagal activity often exerts a beneficial effect. New insights on the relationship between autonomic activity and sudden cardiac death have been obtained in conscious dogs in which a healed myocardial infarction, acute myocardial ischemia, and exercise are combined. In this chronic animal model it was shown that myocardial infar

Synchronization of cardiac autonomic neural discharge with epileptogenic activity: the lockstep phenomenon.

Autonomic dysfunction has been implicated in the sudden, unexplained deaths which account for 5-17% of mortality in persons with epilepsy. This study was designed to determine if epileptogenic activity is associated with changes in the pattern of autonomic cardiac neural discharge and the development of arrhythmias. Nine cats, anesthetized with alpha-chloralose, received pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 2000 mg/kg, i.v. at 10 min intervals. Cardiac postganglionic sympathetic and vagal nerve discharges were correlated with the interictal spikes, brief ictal discharges (bilateral

New approaches to regulation of fluid secretion in airways.

Physiologic, morphologic, biochemical, and immunologic methods have been used to study cholinergic and adrenergic regulation of airway submucosal gland secretion. Using a newly developed micropipette method, we can now measure the rate of fluid flow from each individual gland duct and we can harvest these secretions for specific chemical analysis. Stimulation of both the cholinergic and adrenergic systems affect gland secretions. The vagus nerves are the pathways for many reflexes affecting secretion: laryngeal, gastric and carotid body chemoreceptor stimulation accelerate the fluid production

Recent studies of the actions of cholinomimetic drugs on adrenergic nerves and their implications for the cholinergic link hypothesis.

This review analyzes the results of recent studies of the actions of cholinomimetic drugs on adrenergic nerve terminals and their implications for the cholinergic link hypothesis. Thus far, evidence suggests that the only possible action of endogenous acetylcholine (ACh) present near noradrenaline (NA) stores is an inhibition of the release of NA from the adrenergic nerve terminals and that NA is released only when the action of acetylcholinesterase is inhibited. Nicotinic agents have been shown to act on adrenergic nerve terminal membranes, a finding that casts doubt on the proposed intraneur

Influence of left versus right hemibody onset Parkinson's disease on cardiovascular control.

Whereas the left hemisphere is involved in regulating the parasympathetic nervous system, the right hemisphere regulates the sympathetic. Given the asymmetrical onset of motor symptoms and neuropathology in PD, differences in cardiovascular functions might be expected between PD patients with left hemibody onset (LHO) versus right hemibody onset (RHO). A total of 66 PD patients served as participants, including 31 LHO patients and 35 RHO PD patients. All participants had their resting heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) recorded. Although the LHO group had lower systolic BP, it had higher …

Heart-brain interactions in cardiac arrhythmias: role of the autonomic nervous system.

The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the genesis of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Evidence is substantial for a neural component in sudden cardiac death. Sympathetic nerve sprouting and regional myocardial hyperinnervation following myocardial injury promote cardiac arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death through several potential mechanisms. Modulating autonomic tone is a potential method to reduce the risk of ventricular arrhythmias. Thoracic spinal cord stimulation is showing promise as a treatment for refractory angina. In addition, spinal cord stimulatio

The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway: an innovative treatment strategy for respiratory diseases and their comorbidities.

Over the past few decades, it has been clarified that the nervous system and immune system have overlapping distributions and their interactions are critical in the regulation of immunological and inflammatory responses. The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, including the parasympathetic nerve systems and humoral factors orchestrate the immune responses to protect the body during infection and tissue injury. Recent investigations have attempted to clarify how the parasympathetic nerve systems attenuate the systemic inflammatory responses and identified the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine recep

Disorder of autonomic nervous system and its vulnerability to external stimulation in functional dyspepsia.

To elucidate the role of autonomic nervous system in functional dyspepsia patients, we examined 24-h heart rate variability: the basal levels, responses after lunch, cold pressor and mental arithmetic tests, and the efficacy of an autonomic drug (tofisopam). The high-frequency component (HF: 0.15-0.40 Hz) and the ratio of HF to the low-frequency component (LF: 0.04-0.15 Hz; LF/HF ratio) were used as indicators of parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nervous system function. The HF component in the 24-h, daytime, and nighttime was low in 86.7%, 97.8%, and 66.7% of patients (n = 45) and the

Central nervous system involvement in the autonomic responses to psychological distress.

Psychological distress can trigger acute coronary syndromes and sudden cardiac death in vulnerable patients. The primary pathophysiological mechanism that plays a role in stress-induced cardiac events involves the autonomic nervous system, particularly disproportional sympathetic activation and parasympathetic withdrawal. This article describes the relation between psychological distress and autonomic nervous system function, with a focus on subsequent adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The role of the central nervous system in these associations is addressed, and a systematic review is presente

The presence of antiautonomic membrane receptor antibodies do not correlate with brain lesions in Chagas' disease.

UNLABELLED: We previously demonstrated correlation between parasympathetic dysfunction and brain white matter lesions in chronic chagasic patients. OBJECTIVE: To correlate serum functional circulating antibodies with beta adrenergic (Ab-beta), muscarinic (Ab-M) or muscarinic and beta adrenergic (Ab-Mbeta) activity, the autonomic system function and brain lesions in chronic chagasic patients. METHOD: In fifteen consecutive chagasic patients, the autonomic nervous system was evaluated and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed. The sera of all patients were tested to the presence

[Autonomic neuropathy in diabetes mellitus and advanced age].

The reactions of cardiac frequencies of 10 diabetic persons, seven of them dependent on insulin, aged 45.5 +/- 11.8 years, having had diabetes for 12.5 +/- 7.2 years, were investigated with the aid of provocations by a tilting table under selective pharmacological blockades of 1) the parasympathetic system (atropine 0.04 mg/kg body-weight), 2) sympathetic system (propranolol 0.2 mg/kg body-weight), and 3) of both systems (autonomic blockade). These reactions were compared with the reactions of 13 healthy subjects of comparable age (31.6 +/- 9.4 years), as well as with a group of elderly but he

Long-term effect of parasympathetic or sympathetic denervation on intestinal epithelial cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Intestinal epithelial tissue is constantly regenerated as a means to maintain proper tissue function. Previous studies have demonstrated that denervation of the parasympathetic or sympathetic nervous system to the intestine alters this process. However, results are inconsistent between studies, showing both increases and decreases in proliferation after denervation of the parasympathetic or sympathetic. The effect appears to correlate with (1) the timing post-denervation, (2) denervation-induced changes in food intake, (3) the denervation technique used, and (4) which intestinal segment is inv

Vagus nerve contributes to metabolic syndrome in high-fat diet-fed young and adult rats.

What is the central question of this study? Different nerve contributes periods of life are known for their differential sensitivity to interventions, and increased parasympathetic activity affects the development and maintenance of obesity. Thus, we evaluated the involvement of the vagus nerve by performing a vagotomy in young or adult rats that were offered an obesogenic high-fat diet. What is the main finding and its importance? Although the accumulation of adipose tissue decreased in both younger and older groups, the younger rats showed a greater response to the effects of vagotomy in gen

Cardiac Autonomic Dynamics Differentially Shape Cognitive and Affective Theory of Mind: Evidence From Respiratory Manipulation.

Theory of Mind (ToM) is a fundamental component of social cognition that enables individuals to infer others' mental states and predict their behavior. Although ToM may be shaped by cardiac autonomic dynamics, the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying its cognitive (CToM) and affective (AToM) components remain unclear. Prior research has predominantly emphasized cardiac parasympathetic (PNS) modulation, whereas the role of cardiac sympathetic (SNS) activation-particularly under experimental manipulation-remains underexplored. The present study experimentally manipulated cardiac autonomic s

The brain-heart-immune axis: a vago-centric framework for predicting and enhancing resilient recovery in older surgery patients.

Nearly all geriatric surgical complications are studied in the context of a single organ system, e.g., cardiac complications and the heart; delirium and the brain; infections and the immune system. Yet, we know that advanced age, physiological stress, and infection all increase sympathetic and decrease parasympathetic nervous system function. Parasympathetic function is mediated through the vagus nerve, which connects the heart, brain, and immune system to form, what we have termed, the brain-heart-immune axis. We hypothesize that this brain-heart-immune axis plays a critical role in surgical …

Neural control of choroidal blood flow.

The choroid is richly innervated by parasympathetic, sympathetic and trigeminal sensory nerve fibers that regulate choroidal blood flow in b … n, and possibly by retinal temperature. The former two appear to be mediated by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, via central circuits responsive to retinal activity and systemic blood pressure, but adjustments for ocular perfusion pressure also appear to be influenced by local autoregulatory myogenic mechanisms. Adaptive choroidal responses to temperature ma …

Constitutive secretion of kallikreins in vivo from rat submandibular glands.

In parasympathetic saliva from rat submandibular glands the relative proportions of the various tissue kallikreins differ from those in sympathetic saliva. Kallikreins in sympathetic saliva arise from exocytosis of prepackaged granules in granular tubules, so the kallikreins in parasympathetic saliva must come from a non-granular pool, and are likely to be secreted through a constitutive vesicular route. During periods devoid of stimulation in anaesthetised rats, the kallikreins have been found to accumulate progressively in glandular lumina in parasympathetic-like proportions. As this transpo
