Precision residential greenspace, urban environmental exposures, and incident dementia among older adults in Sweden: A 16-year cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Residential greenspace is linked to mental and cardiometabolic health, but longitudinal studies on detailed greenspace and dementia incidence are limited. METHODS: We followed 2993 dementia-free participants in the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care Kungsholmen for 16 years; 477 developed clinically diagnosed dementia. Greenspace was assessed using normalized difference vegetation index within 100-, 250-, and 500-m residential buffers. Cox models estimated hazard ratios (HRs) per interquartile-range greenspace increment and tested effect modification by air pollution, road

The value of a park in crises: Quantifying the health and wellbeing benefits of green spaces using exogenous variations in use values.

Most people consider parks important for their quality of life, yet systematic causal evidence is missing. We exploit exogenous variations in their use values to estimate causal effects. Using a representative household panel with precise geographical coordinates of households linked to satellite images of green spaces with a nationwide coverage, we employ a spatial difference-in-differences design, comparing within-individual changes between residents living close to a green space with those living further away. We exploit Covid-19 as an exogenous shock. We find that green spaces raised overa

Long-term impacts of co-designed sustainable park improvements on physical activity and other wellbeing behaviours: a 7-year natural experimental study in a deprived urban area.

BACKGROUND: Creating or improving urban parks is a promising intervention for promoting physical activity (PA). However, robust natural experimental evidence of effectiveness remains limited, particularly regarding long-term impacts. We previously showed that co-designed, sustainable urban park improvements in a deprived UK area increased walking and other wellbeing-related behaviours up to 15 months post-intervention. We now examine whether these effects were sustained five years post-intervention (seven years after baseline). METHODS: Two intervention sites were matched to two comparison sit

Socioeconomic status influences the relationship between residential green space and the risk of osteoporosis among rural adults: a large-scale population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Residential green space has been associated with a range of chronic health outcomes. However, its relationship with osteoporosis remains understudied. This study aimed to investigate the association between residential green space exposure and the prevalence of osteoporosis, and further to examine the combined effects of socioeconomic status (SES) on this relationship. METHODS: This study involved 6,544 participants from the Henan Rural Cohort study. Residential green space was measured via normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). SES was a

Acute Gastroenteritis Outbreak Among Colorado River Rafters and Backpackers in the Grand Canyon, 2022.

INTRODUCTION: From April 1 to May 31, 2022, Grand Canyon National Park received increased acute gastroenteritis reports. Pooled portable toilet specimens identified norovirus genogroups I and II. We sought to determine outbreak transmission contributors and individual risk factors while rafting or backpacking in the park. METHODS: Grand Canyon rafters and backpackers were surveyed online from June 13-July 8, 2022, and a Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify predictors associated with illness and adjusted for potential confounding factors. RESULTS: Among 762 surveys, 119 cases a

The effects of green space and physical activity on muscle strength: a national cross-sectional survey with 128,759 Chinese adults.

BACKGROUND: Muscle strength is closely related to chronic noncommunicable diseases; specifically, a decline in handgrip strength (HS) is predominant globally. Exposure to green space-built environment components used for health intervention-reportedly decreases the risk of certain diseases and all-cause mortality. However, evidence in this area is limited. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the association between green space exposure and muscle strength and ascertain the combined effect of physical activity and green space exposure on muscle strength. METHOD: Data from 128,759 participants (age

Locations of Adolescent Physical Activity in an Urban Environment and Their Associations with Air Pollution and Lung Function.

Rationale: Physical activity while being exposed to high concentrations of air pollution may lead to greater inhalation of pollutant particles and gases. Thus, owing to features of the built city environment, specific locations where physical activity take place may put individuals at increased risk for harmful inhaled exposures leading to decrements in lung function. Objectives: The objectives were to determine locations throughout an urban landscape where children engage in moderate to vigorous activity (MVA). We hypothesized that outdoor activity would be associated with increased exposure t

The Association between Residential Green Space in Childhood and Development of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Access to green space has been hypothesized to have a beneficial impact on children's mental well-being and cognitive development. The underlying mechanisms of the mental health benefits of green space are not fully understood, but different pathways have been suggested, such as the psychologically restoring capacities of green space, the ability to facilitate physical activity and social cohesion, and the mitigation of exposure to air pollution. OBJECTIVES: In this nationwide cohort study, we investigated associations between residential green space in early childhood and a clini

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Serra da Canastra National Park in Minas Gerais, Brazil: species, abundance, ecological and seasonal aspects with notes on rickettsial infection.

The Cerrado Biome is the second largest in Brazil covering roughly 2 million km2, with varying features throughout its area. The Biome is endangered but it is also source of animal species for rural, green urban and degraded rainforest areas. Ticks are among Cerrado species that establish at anthropogenic sites and although information about them is steadily increasing, several features are unknown. We herein report tick species, abundance and some ecological relationships within natural areas of the Cerrado at higher altitudes (800-1500 m) within and around Serra da Canastra National Park, in

Environmental DNA clarifies impacts of combined sewer overflows on the bacteriology of an urban river and resulting risks to public health.

There is no reference of microbiological water quality in the European Union's Water Framework Directive, adapted into English law, and consequently microbial water quality is not routinely monitored in English rivers, except for two recently designated bathing water sites. To address this knowledge gap, we developed an innovative monitoring approach for quantitative assessment of combined sewer overflow (CSO) impacts on the bacteriology of receiving rivers. Our approach combines conventional and environmental DNA (eDNA) based methods to generate multiple lines of evidence for assessing risks

Use of sunglasses in public outdoor recreation settings in Honolulu, Hawaii.

PURPOSE: Approximately, 20.5 million Americans (17.2%) older than 40 years have a cataract in at least one eye, and rates are expected to rise to over 30 million by 2020. Wearing sunglasses, especially early in life, may reduce the risk of cataracts. Meanwhile, little is known about the prevalence of wearing sunglasses in the United States, especially in areas with high ultraviolet radiation. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and predictors of wearing sunglasses in public outdoor recreation settings. METHODS: Systematic observations were made at beaches, parks and outdo

A disrupted human shield: the COVID lockdown alters carnivore dynamics in favour of a dominant competitor.

A 'human shield' effect occurs when a species associates with humans to avoid predators or competitors. Understanding how this effect shapes species interactions is critical as anthropogenic pressures increase globally. Despite broad theoretical support for this effect, its context-dependency remains unclear, especially in urban systems. We used the COVID-19 lockdowns as a natural experiment to separate the effects of the (static) human footprint and (dynamic) human recreational activity increases during lockdowns to test hypotheses related to a 'dynamic human shield' in a competitive species

First detection of enteric adenoviruses genotype 41 in recreation spring areas of Taiwan.

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are DNA viruses found in recreational water, such as water parks and swimming pools. Human adenovirus 41 (HAdV-41) is the most common serotype detected and is a leading cause of acute diarrheal disease. The focus of this study is to determine the prevalence of HAdVs in hot springs. Of 57 samples collected from four different geological sites, 16 samples have shown evidence of HAdVs (28.1%). HAdV-41 and porcine adenovirus 5 (PAdV-5) were the two types isolated, with a greater frequency of HAdV-41, which in other settings has been associated with acute diarrhea. The hi

Are Lockdowns More Effective Than Voluntary Measures in Checking Mobility During a Pandemic?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relative effectiveness of voluntary social distancing appeals versus mandated lockdowns in reducing population mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic, using India as a developing country case study. METHODS: This study analyzed daily mobility data from Google's Community Mobility Reports across six location categories between February 16 and May 31, 2020. A geographic-level regression model was employed to isolate voluntary mobility changes during India's 14-hour voluntary Janta Curfew prior to the mandatory nationwide lockdown. The model controlled for pandemic seve

Solar UV Measured under Built-Shade in Public Parks: Findings from a Randomized Trial in Denver and Melbourne.

Reducing exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) is crucial for preventing UV-induced diseases of the skin and eyes. Shade may offer significant protection from UV. More empirical research to quantify the UV protection offered from built shade is needed to guide disease prevention practices and confidence in investment in shade. This study quantified UV levels under built-shade relative to unshaded passive recreation areas (PRAs) over summer months in parks in two cities. In a randomized controlled trial, n = 1144 UV measurements were conducted at the center and periphery of PRAs in a total sam

Recreation reduces tick density through fine-scale risk effects on deer space-use.

Altered interactions between pathogens, their hosts and vectors have potential consequences for human disease risk. Notably, tick-borne pathogens, many of which are associated with growing deer abundance, show global increasing prevalence and pose increasing challenges for disease prevention. Human activities can largely affect the patterns of deer space-use and can therefore be potential management tools to alleviate human-wildlife conflicts. Here, we tested how deer space-use patterns are influenced by human recreational activities, and how this in turn affects the spatial distribution of th

Differential effects of forest environmental perception on psychological well-being: the moderating role of perceived stress in national parks.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid urbanization and exposure to unnatural environments has helped to escalate global mental health problems. Interventions involving forests have been demonstrated to be therapeutic, but current studies are mostly concerned with direct effects, not taking into consideration environmental perception and individual differences. Specifically, the moderating effects of stress in determining the psychological well-being benefits of forest settings are not well studied. This study therefore examined whether perceived stress moderates the association between forest environmental

Differential Associations of Residential Greenspace and Built-Up Exposure With Children's Executive Function Components: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Research increasingly links neighborhood environments to children's cognition; however, whether residential greenspace and built-up exposure show different associations across executive function (EF) components in middle childhood remains unclear. Using a cross-sectional design, we examined these associations in 1446 Chinese children aged 8-11 years. Residential greenspace and built-up exposure were quantified within 300-m residential buffers using land-cover data. EF was assessed using tasks indexing working memory (span and updating), response inhibition, conflict inhibition, and cognitive f
