PSMA PET/CT as a predictive tool for subregional importance estimates in the parotid gland.

Objective. Xerostomia and radiation-induced salivary gland dysfunction remain a common side effect for head-and-neck radiotherapy patients, and attempts have been made to quantify the heterogeneity of the dose response within parotid glands. Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) ligands have demonstrated high uptake in salivary glands, which has been shown to correlate with gland functionality. Here we compare several models of parotid gland subregional relative importance with PSMA positron emission tomography (PET) uptake. We then develop a predictive model for Clarket al's relative impo

Distribution, nature, and origin of CXCL14-immunoreactive fibers in rat parotid gland.

The distribution and nature of CXCL14-immunoreactive nerve fibers in salivary glands, especially the parotid gland was immunohistochemically investigated. Furthermore, the origin of parotid CXCL14-immunoreactive nerve fibers was determined by retrograde tracing experiments. CXCL14-immunoreactive nerve fibers were localized in the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands, particularly in the parotid gland. Double staining using identical sections revealed that a subpopulation of cells neuropeptide Y (NPY)-containing fibers was immunopositive for CXCL14 in the parotid gland. In the peripher

Bilateral oncocytoma in the parotid gland.

Oncocytomas are rare tumors in the head and neck region. They occur commonly in salivary glands, especially in parotid glands. The prevalence is 0.5% to 1.2% in parotideal neoplasms. Oncocytomas rarely occur bilaterally. To our knowledge, only 20 cases were reported in the literature. A case with bilateral oncocytoma was presented with clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings and treatment options in this study.

Metastatic Cancer to the Parotid.

In many regions of the world, the most common type of parotid malignancy is metastatic malignancy. Metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and metastatic melanoma are the most common pathologies that metastasize to the parotid gland and cervical lymph nodes. Other more rare metastatic malignancies from cutaneous primary sites include Merkel cell carcinoma, pleomorphic sarcoma (previously called malignant fibrous histiocytoma) and metastatic basal cell carcinoma. Systemic metastases can also occur from tumors such as renal cell carcinoma. This review will focus on the management of the two

Prudent management of the mid-cheek mass: revisiting the accessory parotid gland tumor.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The head and neck surgeon's fascination with parotid surgery arises from the gland's spectrum of histopathological presentations, as well as the diversity of its morphological features. A mass arising in the mid-cheek region may often be overlooked as a rare accessory lobe parotid neoplasm. This report serves to revisit the topic of accessory parotid gland neoplasms to emphasize proper management, particularly the surgical aspects, so that consequences of salivary fistula, facial nerve paralysis, and recurrence are avoided. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective review o

Kasabach-Merritt Phenomenon of the Parotid Gland: Case Report and Literature Review.

Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP) is a rare but life-threatening condition characterized by consumptive coagulopathy associated with a vascular tumor. This phenomenon usually presents in early infancy and commonly reported sites of tumor include extremities, trunk, and neck. We report a newborn with KMP, presenting with parotid gland hemangioma and associated vascular complications. This case report and literature review, aim to describe the imaging features of KMP in an infant, along with a compilation of cases from the literature, with a particular focus on the radiological findings of the v

Primary amelanotic malignant melanoma of parotid and submandibular salivary gland: A rare case report.

Primary amelanotic malignant melanomas (AMMs) of the parotid and submandibular salivary glands are extremely rare with only a few reported cases due to its low incidence and misdiagnosis. Malignant melanoma (MM) has a high predilection for the head-and-neck region and majority of the cases in the parotid gland reported as association with metastasis in and around the gland from a cutaneous primary tumor. Immunohistochemistry is solely needed for confirmation of diagnosis and MMs give positive reactivity for melan-A, HMB-45, and S-100. Prognosis for AMM in the mucosal or salivary gland regions

Synchronous primary parotid tuberculosis and EBV-associated primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma.

A 48-year-old gentleman presented with complaints of neck swelling in the parotid region for 2 years. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy and video laryngeal stroboscopy were normal, and positron emission tomography scan showed no other primary lesion. The lesion with tail of parotid was excised and sent for histopathological examination. Part of the tissue was also sent for diagnosis of tuberculosis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as it is a very common disease in South Asian countries. At this point, differentials considered were undifferentiated primary carcinoma, metastatic undifferentiated naso…

Diagnostic dilemma of parotid lipomas: imaging versus fine needle aspiration cytology.

Lipomas are common soft tissue neoplasms; however, they are found rarely in the parotid gland region. The purpose of this study was to analyze the diagnostic challenges of this rare condition. We performed a retrospective analysis of 11 patients with parotid lipomas, treated from November 2009 to February 2014. The mean age at diagnosis was 46.6 ± 2.9 years, and the study population included 8 males and 3 females. Computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed in radiological diagnosis. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) was performed in all cases (including two time

Primary amelanotic malignant melanoma of the parotid gland: a case report.

Amelanotic malignant melanoma in the oral region is extremely rare and has not previously been reported in the parotid gland. This present case report describes an amelanotic malignant melanoma in the parotid gland, with no other primary lesion detectable. The medical history, pathology and immunohistochemical analysis of the case are described and the relevant literature is reviewed in order to help in the recognition of this uncommon tumour. Amelanotic malignant melanoma is a melanoma subtype with little or no pigmentation and, because of this lack of pigmentation and its wide-ranging clinic

Parotid sparing irradiation for the head and neck cancers.

Several authors have shown that xerostomia restricts nutritional intake and limits the ability of patients to maintain normal weight. When both parotids are irradiated, patients never fully regain their normal weight, however if one parotid is irradiated the patients are able to fully recover their weight with in the year. There are certain sites in the head and neck where small and lateralized cancers with diminished risk of contralateral neck metastases can be treated with parotid sparing techniques, i.e., oral cavity, retromolar trigone, anterior tonsillar pillar, tonsillar fossa, and true

First Bite Syndrome: A Rare Post-Surgical Complication Following a Carotid Body Tumor Excision.

First bite syndrome (FBS) is characterized by intense pain in the parotid area that starts with the first bite of food spontaneously. FBS is an uncommonly observed surgical complication of head and neck surgery. A 36-year-old male patient reported extreme pain after surgical excision of a carotid body tumor (CBT) in the ipsilateral parotid gland region at the first bite of each food intake, which improves gradually with continued mastication. Several factors are believed to be responsible for this phenomenon, including injury or amputation of the cervical sympathetic trunk. Loss of sympathetic

First Case Report of Bilateral Parotid Lymphoepithelial Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The parotid is the largest salivary gland and is located anteriorly to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and laterally to the ramus of the mandible. Neoplasms in this gland are relatively rare, with 80% being benign and 20% malignant, primarily represented by mucoepidermoid carcinoma. In the head and neck region, lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) accounts for 0.4% of malignant salivary gland tumors. CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old man with no previous comorbidities was admitted to a Head and Neck Surgery Specialty Service for a painless right cervical mass of uncertain growth. Extensiv

[Tuberculosis of the parotid gland].

The different tumours of the parotid gland can be divided in benign or malignant tumours, regional inflammations and enlarged lymph nodes. We report on a 26-year-old male from Uganda with a slowly growing tumour of the right parotid gland for several months. The CT scan showed a poorly defined intraparotideal tumour. Ultrasonography revealed multiple enlarged cervical lymph nodes. Suspecting a neoplasm of the parotid gland we decided to perform a superficial parotidectomy for histological examination. The pathological analysis revealed a caseous necrosis and epitheloid granulomata containing L

Carcinosarcoma of the parotid gland: report of a case with immunohistochemical findings.

OBJECTIVES: Carcinosarcoma (true malignant mixed tumor) of the parotid gland is an extremely uncommon tumor composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. An understanding of this manifestation is crucial to guide management and treatment of this disease. METHODS: A patient who presented with facial nerve weakness and a painful mass of the parotid gland underwent fine needle aspiration, laboratory testing, and computed tomography of the neck that demonstrated a large parotid malignancy. The patient underwent surgical treatment followed by radiotherapy. Histologic and immunohistoch

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma metastatic to parotid-area lymph nodes.

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic spread to parotid-area lymph nodes (PALN) occurs in 1% to 3% of patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Presented herein is the University of Florida experience using radiation therapy (RT) to treat patients with PALN metastases from a skin primary. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From November 1969 to February 2005, 121 parotids in 117 patients received irradiation for nonmelanotic skin carcinoma metastatic to PALN. Patients were staged by the O'Brien staging system. Of the 121 parotids receiving RT, 17 (14%) were treated preoperatively, 87 (72%)
