Limited value of ultrasound assessment in patients with poor outcome after carpal tunnel release surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the value of ultrasonography in the assessment of patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and poor outcome after carpal tunnel release. METHODS: A total of 88 consecutive patients with CTS (104 hands) underwent open surgical release of the median nerve. Ultrasound (US) examination was performed blind to any patient's data. The median nerve area at tunnel inlet and outlet, the retinaculum distance, and the flattening ratio were measured. The main outcome variable was the patient's overall satisfaction using a five-point Likert scale (1 = worse, 2 = no chan

Absence of efficacy of oral isotretinoin in hidradenitis suppurativa: a retrospective study based on patients' outcome assessment.

BACKGROUND: In analogy to acne, oral isotretinoin has been considered in the treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of oral isotretinoin according to patients. METHODS: From 1999 to 2006, 358 consecutive HS patients were interviewed and examined. A standardized record of the data was performed for each patient during the first consultation. Patients were questioned regarding the effect of previous treatment with oral isotretinoin: patients had to grade the effect as either 'improved', 'no effect' or 'worse'. RESULTS: Fourteen patients (16.1%) declared

[An assessment of outcome prediction in patients with severe brain damage with auditory brainstem response and blink reflex].

Results of auditory brainstem response (ABR) and electrically elicited blink reflex (BR) recorded from 43 patients with severe brain damage within three days after the onset of illness were analyzed to assess the prognostic value of ABR and BR with respect to patient outcome evaluated by the criteria proposed by Jennett and Bond. It was possible to recognize, in recordings obtained from patients with severe brain damage, three basic patterns of BR as well as five patterns of ABR within three days after the onset. Three basic patterns of BR were composed of Type I, which closely approximated th

Critical appraisal of patient-reported and clinician-reported outcome measures assessing functional outcomes in lower extremity bone sarcoma patients-a COSMIN-based systematic review.

PURPOSE: Local therapy for bone sarcoma often significantly impacts patients' physical abilities and participation in daily life, which underscores the need for accurate assessment of these outcomes to guide optimal care. This study aims to 1) evaluate the measurement properties of eight patient- and clinician-reported outcome measures identified in a recent systematic review (2024) as being used more than once in this population, and 2) recommend the most suitable instruments for evaluation in clinic and research. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE and Embase in July 2024 for studies assessing the

Robot-assisted gynecologic surgery in elderly patients: perioperative outcomes and risk assessment in patients aged 70 years and older.

Robot-assisted surgery has become widely accepted as a minimally invasive approach. However, its safety and feasibility in older women undergoing gynecologic procedures remain insufficiently explored. This retrospective study compared perioperative outcomes between two older age groups and evaluated surgical risks by using the E-PASS and POSSUM scoring systems. A total of 61 women aged ≥ 70 years who underwent robot-assisted gynecologic surgery at our institution were analyzed. Endometrial cancer cases involved hysterectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy, while procedures for pelvic organ pro

A Novel Preoperative Patient Survey Predicts Adverse Patient Outcomes-Implementation and Preliminary Results of the Tennessee Preoperative Assessment Tool.

BACKGROUND: Accurate preoperative risk stratification remains elusive. Existing tools are often missing important patient-reported and functional factors. We sought to implement a novel tool, with dynamic functional data and comorbidity variables, to define factors which predict postoperative outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We expanded a previously validated functional questionnaire to create the Tennessee Preoperative Assessment Tool (TPAT). Unique elements included change in functional status, usual and best activity tolerance, and development of new conditions. The survey was administered

Integration of Patient-reported Outcomes Assessment Into Routine Care for Patients Receiving Residential Treatment for Alcohol and/or Substance Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: More than 3 million individuals receive treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and/or substance use disorder each year, yet there exists no standardized method for measuring patient success in treatment. Quantifying a more comprehensive assessment of treatment outcomes could identify the relative efficacy of different treatment strategies for individuals with AUD/substance use disorders, and help patients to identify, in advance, appropriate treatment options. METHODS: This study developed and embedded patient-reported outcome measures into the routine clinical operations of a r

Development of novel patient-reported outcome instruments to assess atopic dermatitis-associated dyspigmentation and xerosis in patients with skin of colour.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and burden of atopic dermatitis (AD) are disproportionately high in people with skin of colour. Previous research has shown that the risk of xerosis and/or dyspigmentation is heightened in this population and may be more bothersome. However, no patient-reported instruments have been developed specifically for these disease sequelae in patients with skin of colour. OBJECTIVES: To develop and perform content validation of patient-reported outcome (PRO) questionnaires to assess AD-related xerosis and dyspigmentation in patients with skin of colour. METHODS: A targeted

Psychometric validation of a patient-reported outcome questionnaire (Qualipsosex) assessing the impact of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis on patient perception of sexuality.

Psoriasis (Pso) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) frequently have a negative impact on patients' sexual health. We have developed a specific questionnaire assessing the impact of Pso and PsA on patient perception of sexuality: the QualipsoSex Questionnaire (QSQ). The aim of the present study was to further validate this questionnaire by checking its psychometric properties including validity, reliability, and responsiveness.A cross sectional observational study with a longitudinal component for responsiveness and test-retest reliability was performed in 12 centers in France including 7 dermatologi

The Need for Accurate Risk Assessment in a High-Risk Patient Population: A NSQIP Study Evaluating Outcomes of Cholecystectomy in the Patient With Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cholecystectomy is considered a low-risk procedure with proven safety in many high-risk patient populations. However, the risk of cholecystectomy in patients with active cancer has not been established. METHODS: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) database was queried to identify all patients with disseminated cancer who underwent cholecystectomy from 2005 to 2016. Postcholecystectomy outcomes were defined for patients with cancer and those without by comparing several outcomes measures. A multivariate model was used to estima

Comparison of two- and three-dimensional assessment methods of nasolabial appearance in cleft lip and palate patients: Do the assessment methods measure the same outcome?

OBJECTIVE: For the assessment of the nasolabial appearance in cleft patients, a widely accepted, reliable scoring system is not available. In this study four different methods of assessment are compared, including 2D and 3D asymmetry and aesthetic assessments. METHODS: The data and ratings from an earlier study using the Asher-McDade aesthetic index on 3D photographs and the outcomes of 3D facial distance mapping were compared to a 2D aesthetic assessment, the Cleft Aesthetic Rating Scale, and to SymNose, a computerized 2D asymmetry assessment technique.
