BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic is pushing healthcare systems to their limits. Dramatic reductions in the adult elective surgery are ubiquitous, but corresponding changes in pediatric services are not well described. The Swedish Perioperative Registry contains data on all anesthetic procedures in Sweden, and therefore, provides a unique opportunity to analyze the effect of the pandemic on the pediatric anesthesia capacity on a national level. We hypothesized that there would be a significant reduction in pediatric elective procedures. The aim was to determine the effects on pediatric surgica…

STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the current practice patterns with cuffed tracheal tubes (CTT) in neonates, infants, and children among members of the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA).
DESIGN AND SETTING: An electronic mail survey was distributed using Survey Monkey to members of SPA between December 2013 and February 2014. Each member was permitted one response.
PATIENTS/INTERVENTION/MEASUREMENTS: Not applicable as this is a practice survey study.
MAIN RESULTS: A total of 805 (28%) of the 2901 members of the SPA responded. Of the respondents, 88% were from the US, 83…

Williams syndrome is a complex syndrome characterized by developmental abnormalities, craniofacial dysmorphic features, and cardiac anomalies. Sudden death has been described as a very common complication associated with anesthesia, surgery, and procedures in this population. Anatomical abnormalities associated with the heart pre-dispose these individuals to sudden death. In addition to a sudden and rapid downhill course, lack of response to resuscitation is another significant feature seen in these patients. The authors report a five-year-old male with Williams syndrome, hypothyroidism, and a

BACKGROUND: Studies that have attempted to define the incidence of aspiration or pulmonary complications during sedation/anesthesia of children with respect to nil per os (NPO) status or other factors are difficult because of the relatively infrequent rate of these complications.
METHODS: The Pediatric Sedation Research Consortium consists of 42 participating institutions with elective sedation services that submit consecutive patient encounter information to a central database. The authors evaluated aspiration episodes and a combined outcome of major adverse events (defined as aspiration, de

PURPOSE: Caudal block remains a standard regional anesthesia technique for pediatric lower abdominal and lower limb surgeries. The conventional weight-based Armitage formula does not consider patient body habitus, which can lead to under- or over-dosing-especially in lean or obese children. Ultrasound guidance permits visualization of epidural spread and may facilitate individualized dosing.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective single-center study, anesthetic records of 25 pediatric patients (age 10-106 months) undergoing ultrasound-guided caudal blocks for lower abdominal or lower ext

BACKGROUND: Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a well-known complication after the treatment of hematologic malignancies, often occurring after cytotoxic therapy, with Burkitt lymphoma demonstrating a relatively high incidence of TLS. However, perioperative TLS is a rare phenomenon, typically associated with tumor dissection, biopsy procedures, and anesthesia induction.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old Korean male patient was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, presenting with a left neck mass. The patient underwent chemoport insertion after starting chemotherapy on the day prior to surgery. The chem

INTRODUCTION: Second-generation supraglottic airway devices, such as the laryngeal tube suction disposable (LTS-D) and i-gel, are widely used in pediatric anesthesia due to advantages such as improved sealing and gastric drainage. This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy and safety of the LTS-D and i-gel in non-paralyzed pediatric patients under general anesthesia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty ASA I children aged 2-8 years (12-25 kg), scheduled for short elective surgical procedures, were randomized to the LTS-D (n = 40) or i-gel (n = 40) group. Primary outcomes were oxygen satu…

BACKGROUND: Remimazolam (Rm) is a novel ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine used in general anesthesia. However, its application in pediatric general anesthesia remains limited. This study aims to compare the efficacy, safety, and postoperative emergence profiles of remimazolam and propofol (Pf) in pediatric surgical anesthesia.
METHODS: Children (aged 3-12 years) undergoing strabismus correction surgery were randomly assigned to the Group Rm or the Group Pf. The Group Rm and Group Pf received an induction dose of 0.3 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg, respectively. For emergence, the Group Rm was administered

Background/Objectives: Few studies have investigated the perioperative adverse events following intraoperative hypothermia in pediatric patients with preserved functional capacity. We aimed to assess associations between intraoperative hypothermia and adverse outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing anesthesia. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included children under 12 years of age who underwent anesthesia in 2020 at Songklanagarind Hospital, Thailand. Intraoperative hypothermia was defined as the occurrence of one or more episodes of a core temperature drop to <36 °C during anesthes

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the rate of caries-related dental treatments under general anesthesia (GA) in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities in Alberta, Canada, between 2010 and 2019.
METHODS: This retrospective, population-based study included all children ( < 12 years of age) living in Calgary (non-fluoridated) and Edmonton (fluoridated) who underwent caries-related dental treatments under GA at publicly funded facilities. Demographics and dental data were extracted from health administrative databases for three time periods of 2010/11 (pre-cessation), 2014/15, and 2018/19 (post

OBJECTIVES: Inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) does not always provide adequate pulpal anesthesia, and supplemental techniques have been investigated in adults. This study aimed to pre- and intraoperatively evaluate the success of pulpal anesthesia following supplemental mandibular buccal infiltration (SMBI) after failure of IANB in permanent mandibular molars with deep caries of pediatric patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following IANB, preoperative pulpal anesthesia was assessed using the cold test, and success was defined when there was a negative response. In cases with failed IANB, SMB

The pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block is a regional anesthesia technique that targets the articular branches innervating the anterior hip capsule, offering effective analgesia with minimal motor blockade. While its utility in hip surgery is established, its solitary use in pediatric pelvic osteotomies leaves the cutaneous incision site uncovered. We report the case of a 21-month-old male with significant cardiopulmonary comorbidities undergoing a unilateral pelvic osteotomy. To minimize respiratory and hemodynamic risks associated with opioids, a multimodal, opioid-sparing analgesic strate

This study compared perioperative dental treatment outcomes under general anesthesia (GA) between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and neurotypical peers, focusing on treatment duration, complication rates, and clinical predictors. This retrospective comparative study analyzed records of 160 children aged 5 to 12 years who underwent dental treatment under GA at a university hospital in Turkey (January 2023-May 2025). The ASD group (n = 80) included patients diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), while the control gro
