Contextual variations in associations between measures of aggression and withdrawal and functioning with peers: A replication study.

Data from 790 older school-age (Mage = 10.2 years, SD = 1.2 years) girls (N = 427) and boys from Barranquilla, Colombia (N = 449) and Montré … erence, (b) measures of withdrawal and sociometric preference, and (c) withdrawal and friendship in peer groups that were high in collectivism. These findings are interpreted as largely replicating the deep structure of the findings from the Valdivia et al. study. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

Physical and relational aggression as predictors of children's friendship experiences: Examining the moderating role of preference norms.

Aggressive behavior is generally detrimental to children's friendships, both in terms of having friends and in terms of keeping friends. Des … ting that friends provide a type of norm more significant to new friend selection than norms of the peer group and individual aggressive behavior. Overall, our results suggest that physical and relational aggression are not necessarily detrimental to children's friendship experiences and may even be beneficial in specific social contexts.

Peer loss: Posttraumatic stress, depression, and grief symptoms in a traumatized adolescent community.

In our prospective study, 168 adolescents exposed directly or indirectly to the same traumatic event-a fatal school bus accident-in which seven students were killed instantly, were assessed for post-traumatic stress, depression and grief symptoms at 2- and 18-months post-accident. Prevalence rates of likely PTSD and depression were noted across all types of physical proximity exposure: 77.6% and 48.1% respectively in the indirectly exposed group, 79.4% and 47.1% respectively in the directly in-the-area exposed group, and 77.8% and 42.1% respectively in the directly in-bus exposed group. Youth with disabilities are more likely than their peers to engage in hazardous child labour.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the extent to which children and adolescents with disabilities are exposed to child labour. OBJECTIVE: To estimate prevalence rates and adjusted rate ratios of exposure to child labour among children and adolescents with/without disability in middle- and low-income countries and to determine whether these rates vary between functional limitations associated with disability. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Nationally representative samples involving 142,499 children aged 5-14 from 15 countries. METHODS: Secondary analysis of data collected in UNICEF's Multiple Ind

The Effects of Brief Social Exclusion on Pain Perception and Pain Memory in Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Peer relationship problems are associated with pain complaints; however, experimental data linking the two are lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether brief social exclusion influences pain processing in healthy adolescents. METHODS: A total of 40 adolescents were randomly assigned to a social exclusion or social inclusion/control condition; they then completed a cold pressor task and provided pain ratings. Two weeks later, participants provided ratings for their memory for pain during the cold pressor (nanalyzed = 33). RESULTS: Social exclusion had no immediate

Interactive Effects of Instagram Foodies' Hashtagged #Foodporn and Peer Users' Eating Disorder on Eating Intention, Envy, Parasocial Interaction, and Online Friendship.

Drawing from social comparison theory, parasocial interaction (PSI) theory, and the literature on envy, a randomized experiment addressed the dynamics of body image, fame, and envy in the context of foodies' foodporn posting on Instagram. Using a 2 (foodie's body type: fat vs. thin) × 2 (foodie's Instagram popularity: unpopular vs. popular) between-subjects design, this experiment (N = 141) examined the effects of an Instagram foodie's body shape and popularity level on peer Instagram users' eating intention, envy, and PSI with the Instagram foodie. The results showed main effects of an Instag

What Does the Implementation of Peer Care Training in a U.K. Prison Reveal About Prisoner Engagement in Peer Caregiving?

The number of aging and chronically ill prisoners continues to rise within the United Kingdom prison demography; consequentially, many institutions face health and social care crises of immense proportions. The needs of this group are both complex and costly, and in the United Kingdom, this is set to a backdrop of overcrowding, increasing violence, and public spending cuts in line with government austerity targets. In this context, the development of prisoner peer caregiving is proposed as an approach to mitigating the effects of aging, disability, and illness. A qualitative study was implemen

The Spectrum of Hazing and Peer Sexual Abuse in Sports: A Current Perspective.

CONTEXT:: Hazing and peer sexual abuse in sport are a critical issue, brought into public scrutiny with increasing frequency due to various forms of media, resulting in major causes of numerous avoidable mental health issues, and in some cases, even death. While the exact incidence of these activities is extremely difficult to quantify, trends indicate that the problem is very likely underreported. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION:: PubMed, Google, various legal journals/statutes, books on hazing and peer abuse in sport, and newspaper periodicals/editorials were all searched. Sources range in date from 1

The Transmission of Gun and Other Weapon-Involved Violence Within Social Networks.

Fatal and nonfatal injuries resulting from gun violence remain a persistent problem in the United States. The available research suggests that gun violence diffuses among people and across places through social relationships. Understanding the relationship between gun violence within social networks and individual gun violence risk is critical in preventing the spread of gun violence within populations. This systematic review examines the existing scientific evidence on the transmission of gun and other weapon-related violence in household, intimate partner, peer, and co-offending networks. Ou

Using video self- and peer modeling to facilitate reading fluency in children with learning disabilities.

The authors compared the effects of video self-modeling and video peer modeling on oral reading fluency of elementary students with learning disabilities. A control group was also included to gauge general improvement due to reading instruction and familiarity with researchers. The results indicated that both interventions resulted in improved fluency. Students in both experimental groups improved their reading fluency. Two students in the self-modeling group made substantial and immediate gains beyond any of the other students. Discussion is included that focuses on the importance that positi

Characteristics of binge drinkers in Europe.

Binge drinking has been shown to be associated with considerable social harm and disease burden. This review aims to give an overview from a European perspective of the socio-demographical, individual, and social factors that affect binge drinking and to identify effective interventions to reduce binge drinking. To this end, a computer-assisted search of relevant articles was conducted. Results showed that males tended to binge drinking more frequently than females. Binge drinking was most prevalent among adolescents and young adults, and prevalence levelled off later in life. Socio-economic c

Examining the role of social bonds on prescription misuse among adolescents in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Prescription misuse (PM) among adolescents in the United States is a significant public health issue, with a reported prevalence of 4.9% in 2022. Understanding the role of social bonds such as parental attachment, peer influence and school engagement is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies. METHODS: Data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health comprised 11,997 adolescents aged 12-17 years. PM was measured as a binary variable, and social bonds were assessed through scales measuring school bonds, parental bonds and community engagement. Binary logis

Implicit peer versus maternal influence on adolescents' preferences: Differences by age and gender.

Adolescence is a formative time for identity development. A key component of identity development involves weighing the explicit opinions of close others when forming one's preferences. Little is known about how more subtle forms of social input may influence adolescents' formation of their own preferences. In the present study, we used a novel social influence paradigm to assess shifts in adolescents' preferences after viewing implicitly delivered social influence cues provided from both an adolescent's mother and a real-life friend. In a sample of 100 adolescents (aged 10-17 years), recruite

Resistance to peer influence, smoking friends, cigarette and betel nut use, and gender among Pacific Islander youth.

The present study examined the relationships between resistance to peer influence and cigarette and betel nut use, as well as the potential mediating role of friends who use cigarettes and betel nut, among boys and girls in Guam. This study included 673 ethnically diverse students (49% female; M age = 12.7, SD = 0.89) from eight public middle schools. The mediation analysis demonstrated that higher resistance to peer influence for both cigarette and betel nut use was associated with lower cigarette and betel nut use directly and that this association was mediated by friends who used cigarette

Social help or harm? An egocentric network analysis of college peer influence on body dissatisfaction and eating pathology.

Previous research has shown that peers influence college women's body attitudes and behaviors. However, many of these studies have examined similarities among peer dyads or specific groups and have not evaluated peer behaviors that may be particularly influential (e.g., appearance-focused social media use). The current study used an egocentric social network approach (i.e., participants identify and report on their social networks) to examine the collective influence of college social networks on body dissatisfaction and eating pathology. College students (N = 94; 94% identified as a cisgender

"Being a light at the end of the tunnel": Peer mentor experiences on supporting adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVE: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a stigmatized and impairing chronic disease frequently diagnosed during adolescence. Adolescents with IBD may benefit greatly from psychosocial support, with early literature indicating effectiveness of formal mentorship programs for mentee-related outcomes. However, limited research has examined the mentor experience within IBD populations. The present study qualitatively examined the perspectives of young adult mentors participating in a peer mentorship program for adolescents with IBD. METHOD: Young adults with IBD participated as mentors in t
