Patterns of adversity childhood experiences from family, peers, and teachers in Chinese adolescents and emerging adults.

Family, peers, and teachers are significant influences in the lives of most individuals. This study examines the differential associations of adversity childhood experiences from family, peers, and teachers with complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) symptoms and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in Chinese adolescents and emerging adults. This study involved a total of 5,477 adolescents and 3,995 emerging adults in China, surveyed on two occasions. Participants completed questionnaires assessing family adversity, peer victimization, and teacher maltreatment at T1, as well as CPTSD symptoms an

Lend to a friend, lose a friend? Guilt, shame, and the emotional costs of informal borrowing.

BACKGROUND: Informal borrowing from friends and acquaintances is a common financial practice in contexts where formal credit is limited, yet it carries significant emotional and relational implications. AIMS: This study investigates how moral emotions, specifically guilt and shame, influence borrowing behavior, repayment decisions, and post-borrowing relationship quality. METHODS: Drawing on prospect theory and cognitive dissonance theory, we conducted a cross-sectional survey (N = 384) among individuals with past peer-borrowing experiences and used regression model to analyze the data. Children and Adolescents' Perception of Parental and Peer Support for Meeting Physical Activity Recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal factors such as family and friends strongly influence children's and adolescents' physical activity (PA). How these young people in Chile perceive parental and peer support for PA practice remains little explored. Therefore, this study aims to determine the association between perceived parental and peer support with PA levels and to compare both types of support with PA recommendation compliance in Chilean children and adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 641 schoolchildren (47% girls, 9-17 y old) from Valparaíso and Araucanía regions of

Peer Navigation for HIV-Associated Kaposi Sarcoma in Kenya: The Power of the Survivor's Voice.

PURPOSE: Sub-Saharan Africa bears a disproportionate share of the global burden of HIV- associated Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), with high morbidity and mortality rates influenced by stigma, delayed diagnosis, and limited access to care. This study examines Peer Navigation, through both personal and clinical perspectives, as a potential intervention to improve outcomes for those living with KS in western Kenya. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study centers on the lived experience of one KS survivor who became a Peer Navigator in western Kenya. The narrative captures his journey from diagnosis to treatmen

MYPATH: A novel mindfulness and yoga-based peer leader intervention to prevent violence among youth experiencing homelessness.

Young adults experiencing homelessness (YAEH) are at elevated risk for violence victimization and perpetration. However, there are no evidence-based violence prevention interventions for homeless populations. This study is an evaluation of a novel mindfulness-based peer-leader intervention designed to reduce violence and improve mindfulness in YAEH. A social network of YAEH receiving services at a drop-in agency was recruited in Summer 2018 (n = 106) and peer-leaders identified at baseline (n = 12). Peer leaders were trained in mindfulness and yoga skills during a 1-day intensive workshop and

Peer-based Social Support for Young-People with Juvenile Arthritis: Views of Young People, Parents/Carers and Healthcare Professionals within the UK.

PURPOSE: A deeper understanding was sought of what peer-based social support means to young people with juvenile arthritis within the UK and ways in which it could be best provided. DESIGN AND METHODS: A secondary analysis of underused, descriptively rich data relating to peer-based support contributed by young people with juvenile arthritis, their parents/carers and healthcare professionals from a qualitative study (seeking their views on a potential self-management mobile-app) was carried out using methods suggested by Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. RESULTS: Peer-based support can

The antecedents and consequences of racial/ethnic discrimination during adolescence: does the source of discrimination matter?

In the current study, we examined the precursors and consequences of discrimination for 876 Latino, African American, and Asian American adolescents (Mage = 16.9 years, SD = 0.43). The race/ethnic characteristics of schools and neighborhoods influenced adolescents' perceptions of the race/ethnic climates of these contexts. In turn, adolescents who viewed climates more negatively were more likely to perceive discriminatory treatment by school personnel, peers, and societal institutions. Discrimination from these 3 sources exerted differential influence on developmental outcomes: Greater discrim

Peer learning in birth units: Experiences of preceptors, student coordinators and managers.

AIM: To explore managers', student coordinators' and preceptors' experiences of implementing and using peer learning in birth units. BACKGROUND: Clinical learning in birth units is influenced by multiple factors and may be challenging for both midwifery students and preceptors. To complement traditional one-to-one supervision, the Birth Unit Peer Learning model was developed and implemented in Swedish birth units. The model aims to promote student-centred learning, collaboration, reflection and active participation in clinical practice while maintaining the quality of learning and care. DESI

Perceptions of Sexual Risk, PrEP Services, and Peer Navigation Support among HIV-Negative Latinx and Black Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) Residing in Western Washington.

INTRODUCTION: HIV PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is underutilized among Latinx and Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. Although peer navigation approaches may increase PrEP uptake and adherence, it remains unclear what strategies work best for MSM of color. METHODS: From July 2017 to August 2018, we conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 25 purposively sampled Latinx and Black cisgender MSM to evaluate how the intersectionality of race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other identities influenced men's views on PrEP in general and on peer navigation speci

Perceived Parental Comparison, Authenticity and School Adjustment in Adolescence: A Cross-Lagged Panel Network Analysis.

In increasingly competitive educational contexts, parents often evaluate and compare their children's performance, which may shape adolescents' self-related experiences and adjustment. Little is known about how different forms of perceived parental comparison are dynamically associated with adolescents' psychological functioning and school adjustment. Using a cross-lagged panel network approach, this study examined the dynamic associations among perceived parental comparison, authenticity and school adjustment. Four hundred forty-nine adolescents in China (Mage = 15.81 ± 0.61; 51.9% female) pa

Disentangling the mental health impact of childhood abuse and neglect: A replication and extension study in a Brazilian sample of high-risk youth.

Childhood maltreatment is a key predictor of mental health problems across the life span. Yet, how maltreatment types independently and jointly influence the risk for psychiatric problems remains unclear. The aim of the study was two-fold: first, to replicate recent findings regarding the impact of maltreatment types on youth psychiatric symptoms, based on a Brazilian sample of high-risk adolescents (n = 347; age range = 11-17 yrs), and second, to extend existing findings by examining whether this relationship is mediated by bullying victimization and/or perpetration. Measures included self-re

When Generosity Backfires: Children's Evaluation of Sharing With Negative Social Consequences.

Generosity is widely regarded as one of the most praiseworthy virtues. However, when individuals engage in generous acts, such behavior can sometimes lead to unintended consequences, such as overshadowing the reputations of others. Across two studies (N = 512), we examined how 8- to 12-year-old children and adults evaluate generous sharing when it undermines a peer's reputation, and whether this evaluation is moderated by the social relationship between the individuals involved. Participants were presented with a vignette in which an actor shared more than a peer-who was either a friend or a s

Friend influence and susceptibility to influence on emotions towards math: The role of adolescent temperament.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Peer relationships during adolescence play an important role in shaping academic outcomes. The present study examined friend influences on emotions towards math, as well as the role of temperament in these influences. SAMPLE: The sample consisted of 350 Finnish students (mean age 13.29 years; 64% girls) who were involved in stable friendship dyads from fall to spring of Grade 7. METHODS: In this two-wave study, information on adolescents' temperament (i.e., negative emotionality, extraversion, effortful control) and on seven emotions towards math (i.e., enjoyment, hope,

Acculturation as a Moderator of HIV Risk Behavior Correlates Among Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Acculturation is associated with increased sexual risk behaviors among heterosexual Latinos, but its influence among Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) remains less clear. Elements of acculturation may create distinct lived experiences among sexual minority Latinos, moderating how beneficial and adverse influences contribute to their sexual risk behaviors. Latino MSM living in New York City (n = 412) were recruited using a modified time-space venue- and web-based sampling method. Negative binomial regression models estimated associations between indicators of accul

Mapping the physical condition, peer and parental support, and MVPA: a network analysis in schoolchildren from the ACTIBESE project.

BACKGROUND: Active behaviour denotes any type of movement that enhances overall physical well-being, a trend that has seen a gradual decline among schoolchildren globally. This study aimed to examine the complex interplay between physical condition, peer and parental support, and moderate and vigorous physical activity, both inside and outside school, using network analysis in a sample of Chilean children and adolescents. METHODS: The sample includes 655 schoolchildren aged 8 to 16. Instruments used include a questionnaire for sociodemographic and physical activity (PA) variables, assessing f

Relationships between childhood maltreatment, peer victimization and depressive symptoms in youth: a network approach on the cycle of victimization.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as childhood maltreatment and peer-related problems, are among the most influential risk factors contributing to the development of depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. Using a network approach, this study investigated the relationships between diverse forms of ACEs and distinct depressive symptoms in children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders. METHODS: A total of 464 psychiatric outpatients diagnosed with a range of psychiatric disorders (278 females; mean age = 14.2 years, standard deviation = 2.1 years) were includ

Outreach in natural settings: the use of peer leaders for HIV prevention among injecting drug users' networks.

OBJECTIVE: Guided by a social influence and empowerment framework, peer leaders in the injecting drug user (IDU) community were trained to promote human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention among their contacts within and beyond their sex and drug networks. METHODS: From 1994 to 1995 in Baltimore, Maryland, 36 peer leaders who participated in the 10-session training program were administered pretest and posttest surveys. Evaluation included leaders' self-reported HIV-related behaviors and outreach activities. Survey data also were collected from 78 of the leaders' risk network members. RE

Enhancing Recruitment of Adolescents Aged 16-18 Years in a Web-Based Peer Network Study Through Financial Reimbursements: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Peers are known to influence the health behaviors and attitudes of adolescents, yet recruitment of these networks is challenging. Previous studies have used web-based respondent-driven sampling methods to recruit this population, yet none have experimentally investigated the impact of financial reimbursements. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) compare the effectiveness of two financial reimbursement strategies for recruiting adolescents and their peer networks and (2) explore factors associated with successfully recruiting peers. METHODS: A parallel-design randomized controlled

Structural conditions, social networks, and the HIV vulnerability among Indonesian male labour migrants and motorbike taxi drivers.

BACKGROUND: The Indonesian National AIDS report reveals that the percentage of HIV cases in the country is significantly higher in men compared to women, which is contrary to global AIDS data. Using a conceptual model of how social networks impact health, this paper describes how structural conditions, such as poverty, lack of job opportunities, and lack of income shaped the social networks of Indonesian men. It also describes how these social networks created opportunities for various social mechanisms, including social influence, peer pressure, and intimate contact, that facilitated HIV infe
