The temporal dynamics of metacognition: Dissociating task-related activity from later metacognitive processes.

In recent years, neuroscience research spent much effort in revealing brain activity related to metacognition. Despite this endeavor, it remains unclear exactly when metacognitive experiences develop during task performance. To investigate this, the current study used EEG to temporally and spatially dissociate task-related activity from metacognitive activity. In a masked priming paradigm, metacognitive experiences of difficulty were induced by manipulating congruency between prime and target. As expected, participants more frequently rated incongruent trials as difficult and congruent trials

Sound therapy (masking) in the management of tinnitus in adults.

BACKGROUND: This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in The Cochrane Library in Issue 12, 2010.Tinnitus is described as the perception of sound or noise in the absence of real acoustic stimulation. Numerous management strategies have been tried for this potentially debilitating, heterogeneous symptom. External noise has been used as a management tool for tinnitus, in different capacities and with different philosophical intent, for over a century. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of sound-creating devices (including hearing aids) in the management of tinnitus in adults. P

Estimates of compression at low and high frequencies using masking additivity in normal and impaired ears.

Auditory compression was estimated at 250 and 4000 Hz by using the additivity of forward masking technique, which measures the effects on signal threshold of combining two temporally nonoverlapping forward maskers. The increase in threshold in the combined-masker condition compared to the individual-masker conditions can be used to estimate compression. The signal was a 250 or 4000 Hz tone burst and the maskers (M1 and M2) were bands of noise. Signal thresholds were measured in the presence of M1 and M2 alone and combined for a range of masker levels. The results were used to derive response f

Auditory masking in three pinnipeds: aerial critical ratios and direct critical bandwidth measurements.

This study expands the limited understanding of pinniped aerial auditory masking and includes measurements at some of the relatively low frequencies predominant in many pinniped vocalizations. Behavioral techniques were used to obtain aerial critical ratios (CRs) within a hemianechoic chamber for a northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris), a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina), and a California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). Simultaneous, octave-band noise maskers centered at seven test frequencies (0.2-8.0 kHz) were used to determine aerial CRs. Narrower and variable bandwidth masking no

Growth of low-pass masking of pure tones and speech for hearing-impaired and normal-hearing listeners.

Tonal thresholds and consonant recognition were measured in low-pass maskers as a function of masker bandwidth and spectrum level. Thresholds and consonant-recognition scores were obtained for normal-hearing subjects, and for pairs of normal-hearing subjects (who listened in threshold-equating background noise) and hearing-impaired subjects. Consonant-recognition scores were compared to scores predicted by a modified articulation index. Mean thresholds measured in low-pass maskers were higher for hearing-impaired than for normal-hearing subjects for signal frequencies above the masker. Slopes

Signal detection in complex comodulated backgrounds by normal-hearing and cochlear-impaired listeners.

Comodulation masking release (CMR) was investigated in normal-hearing and cochlear-impaired listeners. The narrow-band masker centered on the tonal signal was flanked by a series of other narrow noise bands, some of which had temporal envelopes that were the same as that of the on-signal band (comodulated bands) and some of which had different temporal envelopes (codeviant bands). Previous research using such stimuli with normal-hearing listeners indicated that CMR was often substantially reduced when two codeviant bands were present at spectral locations close to the signal frequency, but tha

Inner hair cell responses to tonal stimulation in the presence of broadband noise.

The effects of broadband noise (BBN) on the tone-evoked de receptor potential from inner hair cells of guinea pigs were measured. The effects of the noise were: suppression of the receptor potential, no net change, or greater depolarization relative to the tone alone, evoked receptor potential. The effects appear to be consistent with a two-tone suppression hypothesis. The time course of the suppression effect is immediate and constant in time. This observation suggests no obvious involvement of a local feedback loop in outer hair cells or one depending on the efferent nerves. Inner hair cell

Effects of aging on response criteria in speech-recognition tasks.

This study examined whether young and elderly listeners exhibit different response criteria on speech-recognition tasks. Young and elderly listeners with normal hearing and with matched mild hearing losses were evaluated on Northwestern University Test No. 6 (Tillman & Carhart, 1966) and the California Consonant Test (Owens & Schubert, 1977) presented at 80 dB SPL and 95 dB SPL. The level of the multitalker babble background was adjusted individually to the signal-to-babble ratio at which the listener achieved 50% criterion performance. Significant differences between the performances of young

Release from first-formant masking in presbyacusis.

Using synthetic vowels, the effects of first-formant masking on discrimination of the presence of a transition in the second formant were measured under conditions of first-formant attenuation and dichotic presentation. The subjects were 26 listeners between the ages of 61 and 91 with borderline to moderate sensorineural hearing losses. Results indicated: (1) dichotic presentation was significantly superior to monotic presentation; (2) attenuation of the first formant did not result in significant improvement of second-formant transition discrimination. Improved performance in the dichotic con

Rise-fall time effects on the brainstem auditory evoked response: mechanisms.

Experiments were conducted to assess the contribution of place mechanisms to the effect of rise--fall time on wave V of the human brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER). Noise bursts of 4- and 10-ms duration were presented at various rise-fall times (0, 1, 2, and 5 ms). Subtractive high-pass masking techniques were used to determine the effect of rise time as a function of derived-band frequency. In general, increasing rise time prolonged wave V latency but did not affect amplitude. Rise-time effects did not depend on derived-band frequency and similar effects were seen in the unmasked cond

Temporal resolution in hard-of-hearing patients.

Temporal resolution is, next to frequency resolution, the most important ability of the ear for perceiving speech. A simplified method for measuring temporal resolution clinically is described. It is based on masking period patterns, but measures only their maximum and minimum through the use of continuous and square-wave amplitude-modulated masking noises. Test tones and filtered masking noises are presented at 500, 1 500, and 4 000 Hz. Temporal resolution data of a normally hearing group and of seven pathological groups are given: Patients with conductive hearing loss show normal resolution;

Review of four new indices of susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss.

The potential use of four new measures of susceptibility to acoustic trauma has been discussed. Each has the advantage, unlike TTS methodology, of not requiring a prior exposure stimulus. The use of an exposure sound has proven to be the major drawback to verification of Temkin's original hypothesis. A disadvantage inherent to the speech discrimination procedures involves the use of difficult-to-standardize speech materials and techniques. Consequently, one of the first three techniques, aural overload, threshold of octave masking, and brief-tone audiometry, is more desirable with aural overlo

Unmasking the contribution of low-level features to the guidance of attention.

The role of low-level stimulus-driven control in the guidance of overt visual attention has been difficult to establish because low- and high-level visual content are spatially correlated within natural visual stimuli. Here we show that impairment of parietal cortical areas, either permanently by a lesion or reversibly by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), leads to fixation of locations with higher values of low-level features as compared to control subjects or in a no-rTMS condition. Moreover, this unmasking of stimulus-driven control crucially depends on the intrahemispheri

Central auditory processing disorder: a case study.

We carried out extensive audiologic, electrophysiologic, and neuropsychologic testing on a young woman who complained that she had difficulty hearing in her educational environment. Conventional audiometric results, including pure-tone, speech, and immittance audiometry, were all within normal limits. The subject performed normally on tests involving the processing of rapidly changing temporal information, interaural time and intensity difference detection, and both absolute and relative sound localization. Early, middle, late and task-related auditory evoked potentials were essentially normal

OCTFlow: Unified conditional generation for balanced classification and annotated segmentation in retinal OCT.

The scarcity of annotated medical images, compounded by severe class imbalance and labor-intensive pixel-wise annotation, fundamentally constrains the development of robust diagnostic systems in retinal OCT analysis. To address these challenges, we propose OCTFlow, a unified conditional synthesis framework for retinal OCT augmentation under class-label or segmentation-mask guidance. Unlike conventional Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) that use Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) for perceptual compression, OCTFlow operates in the representation space of a frozen ophthalmic foundation model such as R

Brain substrates of perceived spatial separation between speech sources under simulated reverberant listening conditions in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia recognize speech poorly under multiple-people-talking (informational masking) conditions. In reverberant environments, direct-wave signals from a speech source are perceptually integrated with the source reflections (the precedence effect), forming perceived spatial separation (PSS) between different sources and consequently improving target-speech recognition against informational masking. However, the brain substrates underlying the schizophrenia-related vulnerability to informational masking and whether schizophrenia affects the unmasking effect of PSS

Impairment of holistic face perception following right occipito-temporal damage in prosopagnosia: converging evidence from gaze-contingency.

Gaze-contingency is a method traditionally used to investigate the perceptual span in reading by selectively revealing/masking a portion of the visual field in real time. Introducing this approach in face perception research showed that the performance pattern of a brain-damaged patient with acquired prosopagnosia (PS) in a face matching task was reversed, as compared to normal observers: the patient showed almost no further decrease of performance when only one facial part (eye, mouth, nose, etc.) was available at a time (foveal window condition, forcing part-based analysis), but a very large

Investigating the effect of rTMS over the temporoparietal cortex on the Right Ear Advantage for perceived and imagined voices.

A Right Ear Advantage (REA) is well-established in perceptual tasks but it has been found also during imagery. It is ascribed to the left temporoparietal activity for language, and it can be absent/reversed in some clinical conditions including auditory hallucinations. We applied 1-Hz repetitive TMS over TP3/TP4 (left/right language areas) identified through neuronavigation in 18 healthy participants, before administering a modified white noise (WN) speech illusion paradigm: a voice was presented at one ear, at the same or lower intensities with respect to binaural WN. In some trials the voice

A model for the prediction of breathiness in vowels.

The perception of breathiness in vowels is cued by multiple acoustic cues, including changes in aspiration noise (AH) and the open quotient (OQ) [Klatt and Klatt, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 87(2), 820-857 (1990)]. A loudness model can be used to determine the extent to which AH masks the harmonic components in voice. The resulting "partial loudness" (PL) and loudness of AH ["noise loudness" (NL)] have been shown to be good predictors of perceived breathiness [Shrivastav and Sapienza, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 114(1), 2217-2224 (2003)]. The levels of AH and OQ were systematically manipulated for ten synthet

Low-frequency oscillations reflect aberrant tone restoration during the auditory continuity illusion in schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia (ScZ) often show impairments in auditory information processing. These impairments have been related to clinical symptoms, such as auditory hallucinations. Some researchers have hypothesized that aberrant low-frequency oscillations contribute to auditory information processing deficits in ScZ. A paradigm for which modulations in low-frequency oscillations are consistently found in healthy individuals is the auditory continuity illusion (ACI), in which restoration processes lead to a perceptual grouping of tone fragments and a mask, so that a physically interrupted s
