Environmental enrichment as a strategy: Attenuates the anxiety and memory impairment in social isolation stress.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation (SI) early in life produces behavioral and cognitive abnormalities. On the contrary, environmental enrichment (EE) offers beneficial effects on brain plasticity and development. This study was designed to examine how EE affects memory functions, anxiety level, and the expression levels of memory/anxiety-related genes such as NR2A, NR2B, BDNF, and cFos in the hippocampus of socially isolated rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wistar albino male rats (n = 40) were separated into the five groups: Standard cage (SC), SI, EE, SI + SC, and SI + EE group. For each group, eight

Validity and clinical interpretability of Overall Anxiety Severity And Impairment Scale (OASIS).

BACKGROUND: The Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale is a brief generic measure for anxiety that encompasses frequency and intensity as well as behavioral and functional aspects of anxiety. This study was conducted to elucidate aspects of reliability, validity, and interpretability, such as equivalence of factor loadings across non-clinical and clinical populations, convergence and discriminance of related variables, and performance of detecting diagnostic and medical status of anxiety disorders. METHODS: Non-clinical and clinical Japanese populations were taken from a panelist pool

Interventions for children and adolescents with specific learning disability and co-occurring disorders.

Interventions for individuals with specific learning disabilities (SLD) largely focus on performance within a single performance domain (e.g., reading). However, it is more the rule than the exception that individuals with SLD will experience difficulties that span multiple domains (e.g., reading and mathematics), and that co-occur with other disorders (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). In this article, we discuss what has been learned about supporting children and adolescents with SLD affecting multiple performance domains (i.e., reading and mathematics), and with common co-occ

Attentional Control in Bilingualism: An Exploration of the Effects of Trait Anxiety and Rumination on Inhibition.

Bilingual individuals have been reported to show enhanced executive function in comparison to monolingual peers. However, the role of adverse emotional traits such as trait anxiety and rumination in bilingual cognitive control has not been established. Attentional Control Theory holds that anxiety disproportionately impacts processing efficiency (typically measured via reaction time) in comparison to accuracy (performance effectiveness). We administered eye tracking and behavioural measures of inhibition to young, healthy monolingual and highly proficient bilingual adults. We found that trait

Efficacy of transformational breath for anxiety management in professional voice users.

Music Performance Anxiety, a subset of social anxiety disorder (SAD), can significantly impede the lives of professional voice users (PVUs). This pilot cohort study evaluates the efficacy of Transformational Breath (TBr), a facilitated conscious breathing technique that employs high ventilation breathing, as a therapeutic intervention for anxiety management in PVUs. We recruited PVUs diagnosed with mild to moderate SAD and randomly assigned them to an intervention group (n = 12) that completed three TBr sessions with a certified practitioner, or to a waitlist control group (n = 12). Both group…

Odor-elicited anxiety-to-eat is heightened and independent of odor liking, intensity, and identification in anorexia nervosa.

The ability of olfactory food cues to evoke reward- and approach-related responses has been extensively studied. However, no prior study has assessed whether food odor cues elicit anxiety-to-eat, which may be directly relevant to food avoidance observed in anorexia nervosa (AN). Given that conditioned anxiety responses to food are a key driver of dietary restriction and persistence of illness in AN, we created a novel olfactory food cue paradigm featuring odors representing higher energy dense (HED) foods, lower energy dense (LED) foods, and nonfoods to assess odor-elicited anxiety-to-eat and

Anxiety Impacts Cognitive Inhibition in Remitted Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are complex psychiatric disorders, associated with alterations in neural and cognitive functioning. Research suggests inhibition and set-shifting deficits in anorexia nervosa (AN), but less is known about the persistence of these deficits after recovery, or their relationship to comorbid psychiatric symptoms. METHOD: Women aged 19-45 remitted from AN (RAN, N = 47) and controls (CW, N = 24) completed the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System Color-Word Interference Test. It was hypothesized that RAN, and those with higher anxiety or depression, would demonstrate wo

Peripheral and central inflammatory markers associated with anxiety in epilepsy: A combined biomarker model.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is a common psychiatric comorbidity in epilepsy and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Emerging evidence suggests that inflammatory processes may contribute to its pathophysiology; however, the relationship between peripheral and central inflammatory markers and anxiety in epilepsy remains unclear. METHODS: This retrospective study included 184 patients with epilepsy, classified into those with anxiety symptoms (EP-A, n = 107) and without anxiety (EP-nA, n = 77) based on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. Clinical data and inflammatory markers from peripheral bl

Factor solutions of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) in a Swedish population.

Culturally validated rating scales for social anxiety disorder (SAD) are of significant importance when screening for the disorder, as well … yses (EFA) of the joint structure of the scales in the total population yielded a two-factor model (performance anxiety and social interaction anxiety), whereas EFA in the clinical sample revealed a three-factor solution, a social interaction anxiety factor and two performance anxiety factors. The SPS and SIAS showed good to excellent internal consistency, and discri …

Testing pre-task expressive writing as an emotional-offloading strategy in evaluative L2 writing.

Choking under pressure occurs when evaluative concerns consume limited cognitive resources and weaken attentional control during demanding tasks such as L2 writing. Pre-task expressive writing (EW) may externalize task-related worries, but its value in evaluative L2 writing remains uncertain. This 2 × 3 factorial study examined intervention type (EW vs. active neutral writing [NW]) and language modality among 207 EFL university students who completed a timed argumentative task after a 20-minute pre-task activity. Open-ended responses formed an embedded qualitative component. Confirmatory analy

Shame as a predictor of post-event rumination in social anxiety.

Evidence shows that people with high social anxiety levels ruminate about distressing social events, which contributes to the maintenance of social anxiety symptoms. The present study aimed to explore the role of shame in maintaining post-event rumination (PER) following a negative social event (an impromptu speech with negative feedback) in a student sample (N = 104). Participants reported negative rumination related to the event one day and one week after the speech. PER measured one day after the speech was not associated with social anxiety symptoms and state anxiety. One week later, parti

Gaming to relieve tension or anxiety and associations with health functioning, substance use and physical violence in high school students.

Gaming is popular among youth and gaming disorders have been introduced recently into psychiatric nomenclature systems. Motivations underlying gaming may include involvement to reduce negative emotional states and thus may link to psychiatric and overall health. Thus, the extent to which adolescents engage in gaming to relieve anxiety warrants additional investigation. Data from 2005 Connecticut high-school students were used to examine how adolescents who reported gaming to relieve tension or anxiety differed from those who reported gaming but not to relieve tension or anxiety on measures of

Blushing in early childhood: Feeling coy or socially anxious?

Blushing has adaptive social functions. However, blushing is also assumed to be a hallmark of social anxiety and shyness. For the first time, blushing and its relation to the expressions of shyness and social anxiety was examined in early childhood. Four-and-a-half-year-old children (N = 102) were asked to perform (singing in front of an audience) and watched back their performance in the presence of that audience. Physiological blushing (blood volume pulse, blood volume, and cheek temperature) was measured, and positive (gaze and/or head aversion with smiling) and negative expressions of shyn

Exposure reduces negative bias in self-rated performance in public speaking fearful participants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals with public speaking anxiety (PSA) under-rate their performance compared to objective observers. The present study examined whether exposure reduces the discrepancy between self and observer performance ratings and improved observer-rated performance in individuals with PSA. METHODS: PSA participants gave a speech in front of a small audience and rated their performance using a questionnaire before and after completing repeated exposures to public speaking. Non-anxious control participants gave a speech and completed the questionnaire one time only. Obje
