Hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis is the rarer of the two forms of potassium-associated familial paralysis. We report a family with hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis with paramyotonia and the anaesthetic management of four affected members. In three of these, paralytic episodes had been precipitated by previous anaesthesia, but this was avoided in the anaesthetics described. We conclude from our experiences that with depletion of potassium before surgery, prevention of carbohydrate depletion, avoidance of potassium-releasing anaesthetic drugs and maintenance of normothermia, patients with hyperk

The eyes of 214 foetuses and newborns and 3 children of the 1st year of life dying from asphyxia, skull trauma during the delivery, perinatal infections, chromosomal diseases and newborn haemolytic disease were studied morphologically. Main pathogenetic factors of the premature infant retinopathy are presented. The results of the study indicate that the eye is involved in the pathologic process in various pathology of the perinatal period this implying the necessity of the eye morphological study in those dying perinatally and routine ophthalmologic examination of newborns.

Oxygen is toxic because it produces oxygen radicals. One important oxygen radical generating system is hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase. Hypoxic newborn babies who have elevated concentrations of hypoxanthine in tissues and body fluids and simultaneously are treated with supplementary oxygen, may therefore produce oxygen radicals in excess overwhelming the body's natural defence systems against free radicals. Further, the capacity of many of these defence systems are probably reduced in the preterm baby. A series of conditions in neonates may, at least partly, be caused by oxygen radicals, e.g. b

Postoperative patients have difficulty maintaining thermal balance for several reasons. Normal thermoregulation is suppressed by anesthesia, neuromuscular blocking agents, and other drugs, and cool environmental conditions and exposure contribute to heat loss. Specific patient groups at high risk for hypothermia include infants, the elderly, and the neurologically impaired. Temperature drift, afterfall, shivering, malignant hyperthermia, and fever are among the temperature-related conditions requiring vigilant assessment and nursing action during the postoperative period.

The ever-changing complexion of iatrogenic perinatal disease dictates the following: 1. Neonatologists and pediatric pathologists must be aware of the current spectrum of these lesions and ever alert to the appearance of new ones. 2. The neonatologist and pediatric pathologist within any given institution should be in regular, systematic communication with each other concerning lesions of this type. 3. There must be a national network for rapid dissemination or exchange of information among institutions regarding these lesions. The Study Group for the Complications of Perinatal Care (SGCPC), e

The concept and taxonomy of periodic psychosis still remains in controversy for the past 100 years. In China, it was first reported by Ji, and thereafter various rinds of terminology and views were given by different authors. In the presentation, clinical investigation and follow up were carried out in 62 cases. In many of these cases, the so-called "periodic psychosis" or "phasophrenia" was early clinical features of schizophrenia or manic-depression. In those cases with apparent symptoms and signs of diencephalic function, differential diagnosis should be carried out from organic brain syndr

Cefotiam (CTM), a new cephem antibiotic with high activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, has been investigated for use in 60 mothers in perinatal period, and following results were obtained. The concentration of CTM in maternal serum was 38 micrograms/ml at 0.5 hour after an intravenous administration of 1 g. A good transport of CTM into umbilical cord serum and amniotic fluid was observed after the intravenous administration into the mother. No adverse effect appeared in the neonates. The CTM is highly useful antibiotic in perinatal infections, and the safe dose of CTM to

Four members of a Chinese family who had thyrotoxicosis and periodic paralysis are described. Two of these patients had "hashitoxicosis' (Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis) as evidenced by the presence of thyroid antibodies in addition to elevated thyroxine (T4) levels. The other two patients were not available for testing. The association of the familial occurrence of "hashitoxicosis' and periodic paralysis does not appear to have been reported previously.

The effect of a laparotomy on postoperative motility in the colon has been studied in dogs. Movement has been recorded by an electrical impedance method each day after a standard laparotomy. Mean values of movement in the descending colon were reduced, not abolished, for 3 days after operation (preoperative: 34.0%; day 1: 17.9%; day 2: 22.1%; day 3: 23.9%). In contrast, there was no reduction in motility in the transverse colon but a rise in activity on the first postoperative day (preoperative: 39.1%; day 1: 63.3%). It is concluded that a laparotomy does not abolish colonic movement postopera

A case of bacterial endocarditis in a newborn without any congenital heart disease is reported. The clinical diagnosis was suspected on evolutive heart failure by mitral dysfunction with sepsis. T.M. mode echocardiography could detect only the valvular defects. Correlations between anatomic and echocardiographic findings allowed to discuss the limits of the method. Neonatal bacterial endocarditis is a rare event. Its diagnosis is difficult and its prognosis very poor. This affection must be prevented.
