Antibiotic resistance evolution driven synergistically by antibiotics and typical organic pollutants in antibiotic production wastewater.

A major concern regarding the risk of antibiotic production wastewater (APW) for the transmission of antibiotic resistance (AR) stems from the residual antibiotics. However, APW also contains high concentrations of organic pollutants, many of which have severe biological toxicity and joint toxicity with antibiotics. The contribution of these organic pollutants to the development of AR in the APW treatment system is unknown. In this study, a wild-type Escherichia coli strain was exposed to six typical organic pollutants in APW individually and synergistically with the antibiotic ampicillin (AMP

Effects of methoxychlor on broiler gut microbiota and liver and its residue accumulation risk to human health.

Methoxychlor as a persistent organic pollutant poses significant risks to human health and the environment. Most toxicological studies focus on high-dose exposures, which do not reflect typical chronic and low-dose human exposure, necessitating the examination of the cumulative effects of chronic exposure to persistent organic pollutants. Our study exposed broilers to different concentrations of p,p'-methoxychlor (0.01-5 mg/kg) in feed, reflecting the doses commonly used in agricultural practices. The results show that even at low doses, methoxychlor causes liver damage, metabolic disturbances…

Hepatic AhR Activation by TCDD Induces Obesity and Steatosis via Hepatic Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1).

Exposure to persistent organic pollutants such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (TCDD) increases metabolic disorder risk. In this study, we show that a single intraperitoneal injection of TCDD (10 μg/kg) in C57BL/6J mice induced body weight gain, lipid accumulation in the liver and adipose tissue, macrophage infiltration, and elevated hepatic and serum triglyceride levels after 12 weeks. Despite serum aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligand levels normalizing by 12 weeks, the persistent effects suggest TCDD sequestration in fat tissue. TCDD inhibited the expression of mitochondrial proteins …

Immunotoxicological effects of insecticides in exposed fishes.

Biologically active compounds used in agriculture that develop near aquatic environments easily spill into rivers or lakes. As a result, ins … s remain in aquatic organisms. The immune system is the first defense mechanism against exposure to persistent organic pollutants or pesticides that have been released into the aquatic environment. Many insecticides have been reported to cause immunotoxicity, which is represented by alteration of phagocytic and lysozyme activity. Recent studies show that immunotoxicity by inse …

Ecology of the cardiovascular system: Part II - A focus on non-air related pollutants.

An integrated exposomic view of the relation between environment and cardiovascular health should consider the effects of both air and non-a … n of noise exposure. Moreover, throughout the alimentation, the cardiovascular system is exposed to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) as dioxins or pesticides, and plastic associated chemicals (PACs), such as bisphenol A. Epidemiological studies show positive associations of exposures to POPs and PACs with diabetes, arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease incidence. POP …

A comparative study of coagulation, granular- and powdered-activated carbon for the removal of perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoate in drinking water treatment.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are persistent organic pollutants in the environment and their occurrence causes toxicological effects on humans. We examined different conventional coagulant treatments such as alum, ferric chloride and polyaluminium chloride in removing these compounds. These were then compared with a natural coagulant (Moringa oleifera). We also investigated the powdered-activated carbon (PAC) and granular-activated carbon (GAC) for removing these compounds. At an initial dose of 5 mg/L, polyaluminium chloride led to a higher reduction of PFOS/P…

Occurrence and levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in deep-sea sharks from Suruga Bay, Japan.

Few studies have investigated the prevalence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in deep-sea sharks. In this study, the levels and profiles of PBDEs were determined in liver samples of eight different species of deep-sea sharks collected in Suruga Bay, Japan. Widespread contamination of PBDEs in the deep-sea environment was reconfirmed in this study as these persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were detected in all specimens analyzed. Mean ΣPBDE levels in the deep-sea sharks ranged from 7 to 517 ng/g of lipid weight. The distribution patterns of BDE homologues were similar in all species…

Advances in the biomonitoring of flame retardants in human matrices.

Flame retardants (FRs) represent a class of typical persistent organic pollutants extensively employed in industrial applications, yet they confer significant biological toxicity and pose substantial health risks. The quantitative determination of FRs and their metabolites in human specimens furnishes critical data for evaluating exposure levels and concomitant health risks. The selection of appropriate sample pretreatment and detection methods depends on the specific FR class and the physicochemical characteristics of the biological matrix. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of co…

Nanoplastics enhance F-53B uptake and synergistically induce colonic inflammation via activation of the B cell receptor pathway.

Nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants that act as carriers for persistent organic contaminants such as 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (F-53 B). This study investigated the biodistribution of orally administered 20 nm NPs and 2 μm MP, their interaction with F-53 B, and the intestinal toxicity of combined exposure. NPs showed higher bioavailability than MPs, with the intestine as the major accumulation site. In vitro, co-exposure to NPs and F-53 B exerted synergistic cytotoxicity in Caco-2 cells, whereas MPs showed no such effect,

Carbon-Modified SnS2/g-C3N4 S-Scheme Heterostructure with Enhanced Interfacial Charge Transfer for Efficient Photocatalytic Reduction of Cr(VI) and 4-Nitrophenol.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) are persistent and highly toxic water pollutants that require efficient treatment under mild conditions. In this work, L-cysteine-derived carbon-modified SnS2 (SnS2-C) was prepared hydrothermally and combined with urea-derived g-C3N4 to form a 2D/2D heterostructure. CHNS analysis confirmed that SnS2-C contained 0.53 ± 0.01 wt.% carbon, while ToF-SIMS depth profiling showed a stronger carbon signal than pristine SnS2, confirming successful carbon modification. Carbon modification induced lattice distortion and strain without altering the hex

Synergistic Transformation of Microplastics and Benzo(a)pyrene under Simulated Sunlight Irradiation: The Role of Chromophores and Reactive Oxygen Species.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons and microplastics are common atmospheric pollutants, but their interaction processes and influence on one another under sunlight irradiation are unknown. Herein, the synergistic transformation of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MP) adsorbed with benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) was studied upon exposure to simulated sunlight. During this process, B[a]P accelerated the photoaging process of PS-MP. UV-visible near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectrometer (UV-vis RDS) analysis of the PS-MP/B[a]P complex revealed that B[a]P and its photodegradation products containing chromophore gr
