Superficial Venous-Associated Inflammation from Direct IV Administration of RRx-001 in Rats.

RRx-001 is a small molecule NLRP3 inflammasome inhibitor with anti-CD47 and antiangiogenic/vascular normalization properties in a Phase 3 clinical trial that has been designated as a drug-device combination by the FDA. In the Phase 1 first-in-man dose escalation clinical trial, where RRx-001 was given by direct intravenous (IV) infusion, the main adverse event was a sterile painful infusion phlebitis (IP). Less pain was experienced when RRx-001 was infused at a slower rate over multiple hours which was impractical on an outpatient basis. In Phase 2, for reasons of convenience and safety, RRx-0…

Double-chamber syringe versus classic syringes for peripheral intravenous drug administration and catheter flushing: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of catheter-related complications is nowadays an important topic of research. Flushing catheters is considered an important clinical procedure in preventing malfunction and several complications such as phlebitis or infection. Considering the latest guidelines of the Infusion Nurses Society, the flushing should be carried out both pre- and post-drug administration, requiring different syringes (with associated overall increased times of preparation/administration of intravenous medication by nurses, and also increasing the need for manipulation of the venous catheter…

Comparative pathogenesis of human WA1 and Babesia microti isolates in a Syrian hamster model.

The pathogenesis of a newly recognized, molecularly and antigenically distinct human babesial isolate (WA1) and Babesia microti, the common … nuclear inflammatory cells that occasionally occluded small to medium veins, pulmonary leukoclastic phlebitis, thrombosis, and multifocal coagulative necrosis in the heart, spleen, lung, and liver. No vascular lesions or areas of coagulative necrosis were detected in any B. microti-infected or control hamsters. The results of this study suggest that marked …

Surgery in acute and chronic venous disease.

This report describes a favorable experience with 140 cases of surgical intervention in deep venous disease of the lower extremity, divided between acute and chronic problems. Of these, 107 were treated for acute phlebitis and 33 for deep venous insufficiency. Seventy-seven cases of acute iliofemoral phlebitis underwent thrombectomy. Preoperative venography was done in all, and postoperative venography was done in 57 patients. Of these, 75% had patent iliofemoral segments after a modified surgical approach. A positive correlation has been found between the degree of adherence of the iliofemora…

Intramural mesenteric venulitis. A new cause of intestinal ischaemia.

Venous damage is an uncommon cause of intestinal ischaemia. We report on a 44-year-old woman who presented signs and symptoms of acute intes … t one extreme (the microscopic variant or intramural phase) of the spectrum comprising entero-colic phlebitis and mesenteric inflammatory veno-occlusive disease. The immunohistochemical evidence of a marked preponderance of T phenotype in the perivenular lymphocytes suggests lymphocyte-mediated vascular damage as the pathogenesis of the lesion.

[A case of Mondor's disease of the penis].

A case of Mondor's disease of the penis in a 40-year-old man is reported. The patient complained of a small subcutaneous induration (0.5 x 1.0 cm) with slight tenderness in the dorsal region of the penile shaft. On examination, the linear cord was palpated running both distally and proximally from the induration. This lesion was removed under local anesthesia, and the induration and the cord were found to be part of the superficial dorsal vein of the penis. The venous wall was thick and the thrombus was packed in it. Histological findings showed the proliferation of connective tissue of the ve

Sparing of saphenous vein during inguinal lymphadenectomy for vulval malignancies.

OBJECTIVE: This work was set out to investigate the effect of saphenous vein preservation during inguinal lymphadenectomy for patients with … ing group and 44 patients (66.7%) in the excision group (P<0.01). Still, short-term lower extremity phlebitis was observed with 7 patients (11.3%) in the sparing group while 17 developed phlebitis (25.8%) in the excision group (P<0.05). However, there was no statistical difference in postoperative fever, acute cellulites, seroma, or lymphocyst formation. (3 …

Combined aortic and inferior vena caval coarctation --an unknown association.

Atypical coarctation of the aorta refers to narrowing (discrete or diffuse) that involves the thoracic or abdominal segments. Such a phenomenon has never been reported in the inferior vena cava. This is a report of combined coarctation of the abdominal aorta and inferior caval vein in a still birth with sirenomelia, ambiguous genitalia, and other extracardiac anomalies. The maternal serum was positive for Toxoplasma and CMV. Evidence of phlebitis was present in the inferior caval vein.

Hepatic veno-occlusive disease in a renal transplant patient receiving azathioprine.

Central vein phlebitis and occlusion developed in a patient who was receiving immunosuppressive therapy with azathioprine (Imuran) and prednisone after renal transplantation. He had been well for 1 year before evidence of liver disease was noted; once begun, it progressed to hepatocellular failure in spite of a change in immunosuppressants from azathioprine to cyclophosphamide. Several known causes of venoocclusive disease and the possible causes in this patient are discussed.

Limited form of Wegener granulomatosis. Eye involvement as a major sign.

Bilateral uveitis was the initial manifestation of a limited form of Wegener granulomatosis in a 47-year-old man. Diagnosis was established by biopsy of a pulmonary nodule. Subsequently, evidence of lesions developed in the patient's central and peripheral nervous systems, but renal lesions were absent. Pulmonary lesions regressed on therapy with azathioprine and prednisone. Blindness ultimately resulted from retinal phlebitis, vitreous hemorrhages, and neovascular glaucoma.

NeuroImages: IgG4-related disease with meningeal and parenchymal involvement on MRI and histopathology.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) rarely involves the CNS parenchyma. We report a 44-year-old man with left facial numbness and seizures. MRI showed right frontal-parietal dural thickening and parenchymal edema. Biopsy revealed IgG4 + plasma cells (> 50/HPF) with obliterative phlebitis, confirming IgG4-RD. This case highlights the need to consider IgG4-RD in meningo-parenchymal lesions mimicking tumors or infections. Glucocorticoids should be initiated promptly after histopathologic confirmation.

Percutaneous intervention to correct central venous port catheter malposition.

The use of central venous port access is increasing due to the requirements of multimodal intravenous therapy.1 However, catheter malposition in smaller veins can lead to vein thrombosis, phlebitis and pain. Herein, we report our experience with the use of percutaneous interventions to correct migrated port catheter malposition. Minimally invasive percutaneous interventional correction of malposition could be an alternative to extraction and re-implantation of malpositioned port catheters.
