Social phobia: a debilitating disease that needs treatment.

Social phobia is a recognized clinical condition and is at least as well defined as other psychiatric disorders in which no brain damage has been identified. There are both qualitative and quantitative differences between pathological and normal anxiety. The separation of social phobia from normal shyness is clear from the distress suffered, the impact on daily activities, the duration of the condition and the qualitative difference of the anxiety experienced in social phobia.

A review of social phobia.

Social phobia is a disabling disorder that has only recently become a focus of investigation. Epidemiological studies have shown social phobia too be far more common than previously thought. These studies have also found that social phobia is frequently associated with other comorbid psychiatric disorders ranging from specific phobia and substance abuse to major mood disorders. Studies of functional morbidity have found that social phobia is associated with significant educational and economic incapacitation. The confluence of recent biological data supports the contention that social phobia i

[Tension-type headache and mental disorders in children].

Based on the analysis of current literature, the authors reviewed diagnostic aspects and the relationship between tension-type headache (TH) and mental disorders in 78 children, aged from 7 to 15 years, admitted to a neurological unit in 2004-2007 and in 45 children admitted to a psychiatric hospital. The latter group included 22 patients with depressive episodes, 11 with anxiety-phobic disorder and 12 with schizotypal personality disorder. The comparison of clinical features of headache in these groups revealed that TH was associated with mental disorders and chronic TH in most cases was a sy

Is early separation anxiety a specific precursor of panic disorder-agoraphobia? A community study.

The present study aimed to examine memories of early separation anxiety symptoms in a community sample of women at heightened risk to neurotic disorder. The chief finding was that subjects with a lifetime history of panic disorder-agoraphobia (PD-Ag) returned statistically higher scores on a retrospective measure of early separation anxiety compared to subjects with either generalized anxiety or other phobic disorders, a result which was not accounted for by differences in neuroticism or General Health Questionnaire scores. Although limited by its retrospective design and the problem of co-mor…

Among anxiety disorders, phobic disorders have been shown to often precede the onset of opiate dependence. The identification of substance-induced versus independent anxiety disorder has important treatment implication. The monitoring of anxiety symptoms after several weeks of abstinence ma …

How does attention training work in social phobia: disengagement from threat or re-engagement to non-threat?

Social phobics exhibit an attentional bias for threat in probe detection paradigms. Attention training, whereby probes always replace non-threat in a display presenting both threat and non-threat, reduces attentional bias for threat and social anxiety. However, it remains unclear whether therapeutic benefits result from learning to disengage attention from threat or learning to orient attention towards non-threat. In this experiment, social phobics were randomly assigned to one of four training conditions: (1) disengagement from threat, (2) engagement towards non-threat, (3) disengagement from

Agoraphobia: a follow-up study four years after treatment.

Seventy agoraphobic out-patients were followed up prospectively for four years after treatment; the improvements manifested during treatment were found to be maintained and partly augmented. At the end of follow-up, 75% of the patients had improved on the main phobia. No clear relationship was found between external control, social anxiety, depression and duration of the complaint at the beginning of treatment on the one hand and the results at follow-up on the other. The disorders remained phobic, no other neurotic symptoms having developed during the follow-up period.

Modulation of the neural network involved in the processing of anger prosody: the role of task-relevance and social phobia.

Individuals with social phobia display neural hyperactivation towards angry facial expressions. However, it is uncertain whether they also show abnormal brain responses when processing angry voices. In an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we investigated brain responses to neutral and angry voices in 12 healthy control participants and 12 individuals with social phobia when emotional prosody was either task-relevant or task-irrelevant. Regardless of task, both phobic and non-phobic participants recruited a network comprising frontotemporal regions, the amygdala, the in

"If I feel anxious, there must be danger": ex-consequentia reasoning in inferring danger in anxiety disorders.

It has been suggested that neurotic patients engage in 'emotional reasoning', i.e. draw invalid conclusions about a situation on the basis of their subjective emotional response. The present experiment investigated whether anxiety patients infer danger on the basis of their anxious response, whereas normals infer danger only on the basis of objective information. Four groups of anxiety patients (52 spider phobics, 41 panic patients, 38 social phobics, and 31 other anxiety patients) and 24 normal controls made ratings of the danger they perceived in scripts in which information about objective

Features of minor depressive disorder subtypes in conditions of COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The continuous research on minor depressive disorder is one of the pressing issues in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We studied the features of minor depressive disorder subtypes in conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two patients were observed with the administration of clinical follow-up research method. RESULTS: The following major subtypes of minor depressive disorder were identified: Asthenic, hysterical, hypochondriacal, apathetic, and minor depressive disorder with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic lead

Panic disorder and major depression. A tale of two syndromes.

Considerable research has been conducted to clarify relationships between panic disorder and major depression. From a number of perspectives, it now appears that panic disorder and major depression are not identical illnesses. While many patients with panic disorder are likely to experience an episode of major depression at some point during their lives, the timing of this occurrence is highly variable. While depression may be an expected and understandable result of having to live with chronic anxiety and phobic avoidance, the available evidence suggests that such a hypothesis is not particul

Personality disorders and features in social phobia and panic disorder.

The hypothesis that there is a specific relationship between social phobia (SP) and avoidant personality disorder (APD) was investigated. Using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders, we screened 32 patients with SP and 85 patients with panic disorder (PD) for the presence of personality disorders. Avoidant features were found significantly more often in SP than in PD, although the diagnosis of APD could not be established significantly more often. On the item level, APD Criterion 6 (fears being embarrassed) discriminated the strongest. Social phobics appeared to

Early Trauma Subtypes are Differentially Related to Anxiety Symptomatology and Suicidal Ideation in Panic Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Early trauma significantly affects the severity of panic disorder (PD) symptoms and suicidal ideation. However, few studies have explored the specific effects of different early trauma subtypes on PD. This study analyzed how childhood trauma subtypes, including general, physical, emotional, and sexual, influence panic and phobia levels and suicidal ideation in adults with PD and healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: In total, 455 adults with PD and 149 HCs participated in this study. The independent variables were sociodemographic and clinical variables such as coping strategies and ear

BACKGROUND: We report the results from a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, fixed-dose study designed to evaluate the relationship between daily dose and efficacy of adinazolam-SR in patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia. Secondary depression in panic disorder and agoraphobia. II. Dimensions of depressive symptomatology and their response to treatment.

Secondary depressive symptomatology in 435 subjects with panic disorder and phobic avoidance was studied before and after alprazolam treatment. No subject who had a primary affective disorder was included. Calculation of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale factor scores revealed that the agitation/anxiety, sleep disturbance, and somatization factors accounted for approximately 75% of the HAM-D total score; these all showed significant improvement with alprazolam treatment. There were few differences in dimensions of depressive symptomatology between those subjects with and those without major dep
