A comparative study of visual evoked potentials and of retinal nerve fiber layer photography in neuropathies of the optic nerve.

The degree of retinal nerve fiber loss within the papillomacular bundle in optic neuropathies was evaluated from red-free fundus photographs. Visual evoked potentials were obtained from pattern reversal with variable check sizes. A semiquantitative scale was used for the estimation of nerve fiber loss and amplitude reduction of the visual evoked potentials. A significant correlation was found between both. However, a few patients showed rather well-preserved visual evoked potentials with an atrophic nerve fiber layer. Possibly a small number of invisible remaining fibers are able to sustain ne

Comparison of magnification corrected optic disc size by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: Optic disc size measurement is essential for determining landmarks, lesions, and distances of the retina. Due to the size variability in nature and when measured with different instruments, newer methods to compare sizes between different instruments are needed. We aimed to determine the comparability of slit lamp, fundus photography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements of optic disc size after correcting for both ocular and instrument magnification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective, observational study, optic disc size was measured by slit-lamp biomicroscop

Deep learning prediction of steep and flat corneal curvature using fundus photography in post-COVID telemedicine era.

Recently, fundus photography (FP) is being increasingly used. Corneal curvature is an essential factor in refractive errors and is associated with several pathological corneal conditions. As FP-based examination systems have already been widely distributed, it would be helpful for telemedicine to extract information such as corneal curvature using FP. This study aims to develop a deep learning model based on FP for corneal curvature prediction by categorizing corneas into steep, regular, and flat groups. The EfficientNetB0 architecture with transfer learning was used to learn FP patterns to pr

Novel utilisation of ultrawide-field fundus photography for detecting retinal nerve fibre layer defects in glaucomatous eyes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Evaluation of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) is important for identifying glaucomatous damage. Ultrawide-field fundus photography (UWP) imaging is increasingly used in the ophthalmological field; however, it is unknown whether it can be used for detecting RNFL defects (RNFLDs). We investigated whether RNFLD can be detected with UWP images and compared the clinical effectiveness of three types of images for detecting RNFLD: conventional red-free RNFL photography (RFP), non-mydriatic UWP and digitally converted green separation of non-mydriatic UWP (G-UWP). METHODS: Eyes

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV), also known as bunion deformity, is one of the most common forefoot deformities. Early diagnosis and proper evaluation of HV are important because timely management can improve symptoms and quality of life. Here, we propose a deep learning estimation for the radiographic measurement of HV based on a regression network where the input to the algorithm is digital photographs of the forefoot, and the radiographic measurement of HV is computed as output directly. The purpose of our study was to estimate the radiographic parameters of HV using deep learning, to classi
