A concise genetic and clinical guide to multiple endocrine neoplasias and related syndromes.

Several familial neoplastic syndromes are associated with endocrine gland oncogenesis. The main ones are: multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1), which affects primarily the pituitary, pancreas, and parathyroid glands; MEN 2A and MEN 2B, which involve mainly the thyroid and parathyroid glands and the adrenal medulla; familial medullary thyroid carcinoma (FMTC), which affects only the thyroid gland; and, finally, Carney complex, which affects the adrenal cortex, pituitary, thyroid gland, and the gonads. Carney complex is also associated with pigmentation abnormalities and myxoid and other

Pigmented purpuric dermatosis persistent over 20 years treated with an ozone nanobubble water oral rinse: A case study.

Pigmented purpuric dermatosis is a rare, unique purpuric skin disorder, most commonly located on the lower extremities and characterized by petechiae with tiny red rashes and brown pigmented patches. The precise etiology and a reliable treatment have not been established. This case report presents a 72-year-old female with repeating purpuric, tiny rashes and persistent extensive brown pigmented patches with pigmented purpuric dermatosis on both lower extremities for the past 20 years. Ozone nanobubble (ONB) water is a new sterilizing agent containing dissolved nanosized ozone gas bubbles in wa

Mucocutaneous pigmented spots and oral myxomas: the oral manifestations of the complex of myxomas, spotty pigmentation, and endocrine overactivity.

The complex of myxomas, spotty pigmentation, and endocrine overactivity is a recently recognized syndrome, transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. The most serious component of the disorder is cardiac myxoma, which has caused the death of one fourth of the affected patients and serious disability in an equal number. It is, therefore, important to recognize patients at risk from the syndrome and, in particular, to test them for cardiac myxoma. Fortunately, in many patients the myxoma complex has a clearly visible marker: mucocutaneous pigmentation. Among 58 patients with the syndrome, spott

Loss of EMP2 Inhibits Melanogenesis of MNT1 Melanoma Cells via Regulation of TRP-2.

Melanogenesis is the production of melanin from tyrosine by a series of enzyme-catalyzed reactions, in which tyrosinase and DOPA oxidase play key roles. The melanin content in the skin determines skin pigmentation. Abnormalities in skin pigmentation lead to various skin pigmentation disorders. Recent research has shown that the expression of EMP2 is much lower in melanoma than in normal melanocytes, but its role in melanogenesis has not yet been elucidated. Therefore, we investigated the role of EMP2 in the melanogenesis of MNT1 human melanoma cells. We examined TRP-1, TRP-2, and TYR expressio…

Promelanogenic Effects by an Annurca Apple-Based Natural Formulation in Human Primary Melanocytes.

INTRODUCTION: Melanocytes are engaged in synthesis, transport, and release of pigments at the epidermal-melanin units in response to the fin … ation. CONCLUSION: Disposal of skin pigmenting agents would be attractive for the treatment of hypopigmentation disorders, to postpone skin photoaging or simply for fashion, so that discovery and development of melanogenesis stimulators, especially from natural sources, is nowadays a dynamic area of research.

The Emerging Role of Visible Light in Melanocyte Biology and Skin Pigmentary Disorders: Friend or Foe?

Electromagnetic radiation, notably visible light (VL), has complicated effects on human skin, particularly pigmentation, which have been largely overlooked. In this review, we discuss the photobiological mechanisms, pathological effects, clinical applications and therapeutic strategies of VL at varying wavelengths on melanocyte biology and skin pigmentary disorders. Different VL wavelengths may impose positive or negative effects, depending on their interactions with specific chromophores, photoaging, ROS production, circadian rhythm and other photon-mediated reactions. Further in vivo and in

Changes in facial signs due to age and their respective weights on the perception of age, on a tired-look or a healthy glow among differently aged Chinese men.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the respective weights of certain facial signs on the assessment of perceived age, tired-look and healthy glow on Chinese men of different ages. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Photographs were taken of the faces of 420 Chinese men of different ages, under standardized conditions. These photographs allowed to focus and define 15 facial signs, which were then graded by 15 experts and dermatologists, using standardized scales provided by a reference Skin Aging Atlas. The facial signs were dispatched into 5 clusters, namely wrinkles/texture, ptosis/sagging, pigmentation disorders, …

Successful treatment of laser induced hypopigmentation with narrowband ultraviolet B targeted phototherapy.

Q-switched 1064 nm neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Qs 1064 nm Nd: YAG) laser plays an important role in the treatment of pigmentary skin disorders, including tattoos. Although it has high efficacy and safety, adverse effect like hypopigmentation may occur causing anxiety to patients. We present a case report of Qs 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser induced hypopigmentation which was successfully treated with ultraviolet B targeted phototherapy, with rapid and satisfactory re-pigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Facial and neck pigmentations are significant cosmetic problems. They are common in middle-aged women, related to endogenous (hormones) and exogenous factors (cosmetics, perfumes, sun exposure), and often represent paramount causes of emotional distress. Although melasma is the most common cause of facial pigmentation, there are many other forms including drug-induced and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. We review pathogenesis, clinical and histopathological data, effect on quality of life, and treatment options in facial hyperpigmentation disorders.

Idiopathic lenticular mucocutaneous pigmentation (Laugier-Hunziker syndrome): a report of a case.

Laugier-Hunziker syndrome (LHS) is an acquired, benign, macular hyperpigmentation of the lips and oral mucosa, often associated with pigmentation of the nails. It is a rare disorder thought to be more common than the number of reported cases would suggest. It is important to include this condition in the differential diagnosis of diffuse oral pigmentation. Here we report the first case of the Laugier-Hunziker syndrome in Scandinavia. Other conditions causing diffuse or multifocal pigmented oral lesions are discussed.

Unilateral linear capillaritis.

We present four cases of a distinctive type of pigmented purpuric eruption occurring in a striking linear and pseudo-dermatomal distribution in young males. Whilst these cases share some of the clinical and histological features of other pigmented purpuric dermatoses, they are not readily classified with any of the entities so far defined in this group of disorders. We believe these cases represent a distinct group not previously described. Four patients with an unusual pigmented purpuric eruption are presented.

Atypical chromhidrosis: a case report of orange sweat.

Chromhidrosis is a rare sweat gland disorder that produces pigmented sweat. The etiology of this disorder often is unknown and the clinical presentation can vary. We describe a previously asymptomatic patient who presented with bronzing of the skin and complained of orange stains on her clothing. The patient's symptoms began after a prophylactic hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy. She is the first reported patient with orange-pigmented sweat in chromhidrosis. She also is the first postmenopausal patient with chromhidrosis.

Bilateral hip arthroplasty for ochronotic arthropathy.

Ochronosis is a musculoskeletal manifestation of alkaptonuria, a rare hereditary metabolic disorder characterised by the absence of the enzyme homogentisic acid oxidase and associated with various systemic abnormalities related to the deposition of homogentisic acid pigment (ochronotic pigment). In this report, we describe a 53-year-old, HLA-B27(+) woman with ochronotic arthropathy. In addition to the typical clinical features of the disorder, she had bilateral hip involvement, which was improved by cementless total hip prosthesis.

Microneedles: A novel clinical technology for evaluating skin characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Current methods for evaluating efficacy of cosmetics have limitations because they cannot accurately measure changes in the dermis. Skin sampling using microneedles allows identification of skin-type biomarkers, monitoring treatment for skin inflammatory diseases, and evaluating efficacy of anti-aging and anti-pigmentation products. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two studies were conducted: First, 20 participants received anti-aging treatment; second, 20 participants received anti-pigmentation treatment. Non-invasive devices measured skin aging (using high-resolution 3D-imaging in the ant

Capturing the Diversity of Dermatology-What's in a Name?

As research related to skin of color (SOC) in dermatology continues to grow, it is increasingly important to precisely define terminology. The terms 'SOC', 'race', and 'ethnicity' are frequently used to analyze differences in dermatologic disease onset, severity, and outcomes. These terms are used interchangeably, are ill-defined across research studies, and frequently conflate biologic and socially constructed categories. SOC has been thought to represent differing degrees of pigment or melanin in the skin, however skin pigment is quite variable among races and ethnicities. Furthermore, certa

Epidemiological survey of the quantity and anatomical position of facial pigmented spots in relation to age in 454 Japanese women.

Facial pigmented spots are one of the phenotypes of skin aging, but no quantitative analysis of spot features such as color intensity, size, anatomical position, and number on the cheek has yet been performed. In the current study, we conducted an epidemiological survey of 454 Japanese women in their 20s to 70s and analyzed age-related changes and site differences of facial pigmented spots. Using image analysis of high-resolution digital facial photographs, 4912 individual pigmented spots were quantified according to color, size, anatomical position, and total number on the cheek. As a result
