By means of a model of the external and the middle ear it is possible to simulate various, exactly defined pathological conditions of the middle ear and to describe their influence on ear canal resonance. Starting point of the investigations are fresh postmortem preparations of 8 human temporal bones with an intact ear drum and a retained skin of the ear canal. The compliance of the middle ear does not significantly differ from the clinical data of probands with healthy ears. After antrotomy it is possible to simulate pathological conditions of the middle ear one after the other at the same te

Multisensory interactions have been documented within low-level, even primary, cortices and at early post-stimulus latencies. These effects are in turn linked to behavioral and perceptual modulations. In humans, visual cortex excitability, as measured by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) induced phosphenes, can be reliably enhanced by the co-presentation of sounds. This enhancement occurs at pre-perceptual stages and is selective for different types of complex sounds. However, the source(s) of auditory inputs effectuating these excitability changes in primary visual cortex remain dispute

INTRODUCTION: Subjects with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) report difficulties in speech understanding in noise. Speech-evoked auditory brainstem response (S-ABR) provides cues for temporal and spectral encoding of speech in the brainstem. S-ABR recording in noise increases its sensitivity in evaluating the auditory processing and related disorders.
OBJECTIVES: Study speech encoding at the level of brainstem when the auditory system relies on one ear and to study the effect of noise on this encoding.
SUBJECTS AND METHOD: This study included two groups: control group consisted of 15 adults wit

The familiar buzz of flying mosquitoes is an important mating signal, with the fundamental frequency of the female's flight tone signaling her presence. In the yellow fever and dengue vector Aedes aegypti, both sexes interact acoustically by shifting their flight tones to match, resulting in a courtship duet. Matching is made not at the fundamental frequency of 400 hertz (female) or 600 hertz (male) but at a shared harmonic of 1200 hertz, which exceeds the previously known upper limit of hearing in mosquitoes. Physiological recordings from Johnston's organ (the mosquito's "ear") reveal sensiti

The nature of the auditory processing deficit of disabled readers is still an unresolved issue. The quest for a fundamental, nonlinguistic, perceptual impairment has been dominated by the hypothesis that the difficulty lies in processing sequences of stimuli at presentation rates of tens of milliseconds. The present study examined this hypothesis using tasks that require processing of a wide range of stimulus time constants. About a third of the sampled population of disabled readers (classified as "poor auditory processors") had difficulties in most of the tasks tested: detection of frequency

Approaches were examined for reducing acoustic noise levels heard by subjects during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a technique for localizing brain activation in humans. Specifically, it was examined whether a device for isolating the head and ear canal from sound (a "helmet") could add to the isolation provided by conventional hearing protection devices (i.e., earmuffs and earplugs). Both subjective attenuation (the difference in hearing threshold with versus without isolation devices in place) and objective attenuation (difference in ear-canal sound pressure) were measured. I

Exposure limits to noise in the workplace have been set merely to prevent disabling hearing loss. Consequently, even in workplaces where a limit of 85 dBA-8 h is strictly enforced, the sound environment is very poorly matched to human auditory capabilities. In fact, ergonomists have been led to characterize this feature of the industrial work environment as an 'extreme condition' that is being imposed on a major segment of the workforce. This type of sound environment seriously restricts the possibilities of making use of auditory temporal, spatial, and frequency resolution, and often reduces

Three patients, a mother and her two sons, with mutilating palmoplantar keratoderma (Vohwinkel's syndrome) were successfully treated with oral etretinate (Tigason). All of them had keratotic constriction furrows of one or more digits (pseudo-ainhum) with threatening spontaneous amputation. Oral treatment with etretinate brought about disappearance of the pseudo-ainhums and normalization of the digital blood circulation. The hyperkeratotic skin became thinned and pliable with a dose-dependent trend towards redness and atrophy. Continued long term etretinate medication has made it possible for t

Oculomotor deficits, vestibular impairments, and persistent symptoms are common after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI); however, the relationship between visual-vestibular deficits, symptom severity, and dynamic mobility tasks is unclear. Twenty-three individuals (mean age 55.7 ± 9.3 years) with persistent symptoms after mTBI, who were between 3 months to 2 years post-injury were compared with 23 age and sex-matched controls. Oculomotor deficits [depth perception, near-point convergence, baseline visual acuity (BLVA), perception time], vestibular deficits (dynamic visual acuity in the pitc

Chronic tinnitus is the persistent sensation of hearing a sound that exists only inside the head. The prevalence of tinnitus in adults in the United States is estimated at 10 to 15%. For about 20% of these individuals the tinnitus is significantly bothersome. Although myriad therapies for tinnitus are offered (often at significant cost), most are not evidence based. Difficulty in the assessment and further development of interventions for tinnitus stems from the limitations of techniques used to evaluate these interventions. Questionnaires are widely available to "measure" (tinnitus can only b

Speech perception is thought to rely on a cortical feedforward serial transformation of acoustic into linguistic representations. Using intracranial recordings across the entire human auditory cortex, electrocortical stimulation, and surgical ablation, we show that cortical processing across areas is not consistent with a serial hierarchical organization. Instead, response latency and receptive field analyses demonstrate parallel and distinct information processing in the primary and nonprimary auditory cortices. This functional dissociation was also observed where stimulation of the primary a

Experiments using diverse paradigms, including speeded discrimination, indicate that pitch and visually-perceived size interact perceptually, and that higher pitch is congruent with smaller size. While nearly all of these studies used static stimuli, here we examine the interaction of dynamic pitch and dynamic size, using Garner's speeded discrimination paradigm. Experiment 1 examined the interaction of continuous rise/fall in pitch and increase/decrease in object size. Experiment 2 examined the interaction of static pitch and size (steady high/low pitches and large/small visual objects), usin

For assessment of safety, it is necessary to measure the maximum possible force exerted by a bone conduction device coupled to the human head. Calibration of bone conduction hearing aids and vibrators in the audiometric range is based on measurement of acceleration and force using an artificial mastoid. Extending the measurement to the high audio range was accomplished using a live head. To assess safety of the UltraQuiet tinnitus treatment system, as an example, acceleration was measured from 5 to 20 kHz on a live human head as compared with calibrated levels at 6 kHz on an artificial mastoid

Simultaneous-masked psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) were obtained from normal-hearing and sensorineural hearing-impaired listeners. The 20-ms signal was presented at the onset or at the temporal center of the 400-ms masker. For the normal-hearing listeners, as shown previously [S. P. Bacon and B. C. J. Moore, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 80, 1638-1645 (1986)], the PTCs were sharper on the high-frequency side for a signal in the temporal center of the masker. For the hearing-impaired listeners, however, the shape of the PTC was virtually independent of the temporal position of the signal. These data

Purpose: This study measured and compared the short-term impact of pitch elevation training (PET) and articulation-resonance training (ART) in transgender women, on self-perception, satisfaction and masculinity-femininity perceptions of listeners. Methods: A randomized controlled study with cross-over design was used. Thirty transgender women were included and received fourteen weeks of speech training. All participants started with sham training (four weeks), after which they were randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group continued with PET (five weeks), followed by ART (five weeks),

Existing evidence supports the notion that feedback-based attentional instructions can modulate vocal sensorimotor control mechanisms. Here, we investigated whether such instructions can improve the neural and behavioral functions for vocal auditory feedback control in individuals with aphasia. A total of 66 participants with post-stroke aphasia and 64 age-matched controls performed steady vocalizations of the speech vowel sound /a/ while their real-time auditory feedback was randomly altered by ±100 cents pitch-shift stimuli during electro-encephalography (EEG) recordings. Two conditions were

Frequency modulation (FM) detection was examined in Mandarin Chinese-speaking listeners with congenital amusia, including pure amusics and tone agnosics (without and with lexical tone deficits, respectively). Thresholds were measured across modulation rates, carrier frequencies, and stimulus durations. Amusics exhibited elevated FM detection thresholds relative to controls, with no difference between pure amusics and tone agnosics. No significant interactions were observed between listener group and acoustic parameters, suggesting the group difference did not vary reliably across modulation ra

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, children with developmental dyslexia (DD) have been found to exhibit alterations in auditory sampling within the delta/theta and low-frequency gamma bands in auditory cortical areas during the initial processing stages, which affects the development of phonological skills. It has been suggested that auditory frequency discrimination measures sensory processing in language disorders such as DD. However, it is unclear how the pure-tone frequency discrimination task can detect abnormalities in functional connectivity in DD.
METHODS: We investigated local and glob

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive stimulation technique for modulating brain activity. However, selecting optimal control protocols to account for their neural and non-neural effects remains a challenge. To this end, the present event-related potential (ERP) study investigated the behavioral and neural effects of three commonly used control protocols, namely, sham stimulation and real stimulation with continuous theta burst stimulation (c-TBS) over the vertex and primary visual cortex (V1), on a given task manipulating pitch in voice auditory feedback. The results showed
