[Congenital malformations of the abdominal wall].

Congenital malformations of the abdominal wall consist of a combination of a parietal opening and visceral abnormalities. The most frequent are omphalocele and laparoschisis. Embryological analysis of the formation of the abdominal wall distinguishes omphalocele, due to absence of differentiation of the lateral folds of the embryo, from laparoschisis, due to absence of differentiation of the mesenchyma at one point of the somatopleural lining. Clinically, omphalocele consists of an opening of the abdominal wall, lined by a double layer (peritoneum and external layer of the amniotic membrane),

Impact of Gender-Affirming Surgery on Craniofacial Exposure for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Training: A Preliminary, Single-Institution Study.

OBJECTIVE: Current available plastic surgery positions in craniofacial surgery are not commensurate with the growing number of trained plastic surgery residents and fellows interested in the field. Despite this, there is growing demand for surgery in other areas of the craniofacial field, such as facial gender-affirming surgery (GAS), in which academic plastic surgery programs can increase resident and fellow case exposure. The present study sought to characterize the increase in craniofacial surgery exposure with the introduction of a GAS rotation among plastic surgery residents at one academ

Welfare and Self-Assessment in Patients after Aesthetic and Reconstructive Treatments.

In the last decade, there has been a noticeable increase in the interest in aesthetic and corrective surgery regardless of a patient's age. Both aesthetical and practical considerations are a motivation for patients undergoing plastic surgery. The goal of this study is to analyze dependencies between welfare, self-assessment and body self-perception in patients that qualified for plastic and aesthetic surgical procedures. The study group included 164 female patients, of whom 124 patients filled out a questionnaire before and after surgery. The questionnaire included demographic data and scales

What is the role of plastic surgery for incisional closures in pediatric spine surgery? Results from a pediatric spine study group survey.

Current best practice guidelines recommend a plastics-style multilayer wound closure for high-risk pediatric spine surgery. However, plastic surgery closure of spinal incisions remains controversial. This study investigates surgeon perceptions and practice patterns regarding plastic surgery multilayered closure (PMC) in pediatric spine surgery. All surgeons in an international pediatric spine study group received a 30-question survey assessing incisional closure practices, frequency of plastic surgery collaboration, and drain management. Relationship to practice size, setting, geographic regio

Reduction Mammaplasty in a Patient with Kniest Dysplasia: Case Report and Literature Review.

Collagen plays a fundamental role in wound healing and consequently defective collagen can impair normal wound healing processes. Kniest dys … n mammaplasty. A review of the literature was performed, and there were no published reports of any plastic surgery procedures in patients with KD. The patient proceeded with surgery and healed without any complications. Given that wound healing appears normal in this patient population, it is reasonable to consider elective plastic surgical procedures in patients with KD.

Vascular Anomalies: A Comprehensive Review of Etiology, Complications, and Management Strategies.

Vascular anomalies encompass a group of disorders involving abnormalities of blood and lymphatic vessels, ranging from benign cutaneous lesions to complex, life-threatening conditions. These anomalies are broadly classified into vascular tumors and malformations based on underlying pathophysiology. Despite their clinical prevalence, the management of vascular anomalies remains challenging due to their diverse presentations, variable progression, and potential for significant functional and aesthetic morbidity. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the etiology, clinical presentation

A 5-Step Simplification of the Fisher Anatomical Subunit Cleft Lip Repair.

Unilateral cleft lip repair methods have evolved from straight-line repairs to geometric procedures, rotation advancement, and contemporary hybrid techniques. The Fisher anatomical subunit repair is a versatile, effective, and highly reproducible technique. It uses mathematical precision in design, avoids multipoint closure, minimizes scar burden, and does not compromise horizontal lip length for vertical height in various deformities. Despite these benefits, the repair has been criticized for its complexity. The authors describe a 5-step distillation of the repair to clarify the procedure and

[Plastic surgical treatment of neurofibromatosis type 1].

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1, formerly Recklinghausen's disease) is a genetic tumor predisposition syndrome in which the mutation of a tumor suppressor gene (neurofibromin) leads to the development of mostly benign neurofibromas of the skin and the central and peripheral nervous systems and malformations or tumors of other organ systems. Patients with NF1 should receive lifelong interdisciplinary care in specialized centers and important treatment decisions should be made by a regularly meeting interdisciplinary panel of experts. Plastic surgery plays an important role in the multidisciplinar

Immediate Lymphatic Reconstruction and the Current Value Problem.

Immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) may prevent lymphedema and decrease costs. Nationwide data suggest that current relative value unit (RVU) allocation undervalues ILR, thus introducing inefficiency into breast cancer operations when coupled with ILR. The RVUs assigned to ILR should be reevaluated in order to protect patient access to this procedure.

Classifications of Prominent Mandibular Angle and Surgical Considerations for Mandibuloplasty.

Contouring surgery is an operation that makes a smooth, oval-shaped face by removing protruding parts of the face. In particular, mandibuloplasty is a procedure that softens the shape of the mandible and is a popular procedure among Asians with a dominant mesocephalic profile. In this study, we tried to discuss the considerations before surgery by dividing the mandibular shape into morphologic aspects in the lateral and frontal views and anatomic considerations. In the lateral view, it is essential to consider the posterior ramal height and mandibular body length of each patient. These factors

Patient's Perceptions of Importance of Discontinuing Antithrombotic Medication Before Oculoplastics Surgery.

This study aims to analyze patients' perspectives to ultimately gain insight into the patients understanding in 3 broad categories: their understanding of how their medications, supplements, and over-the-counter drugs work, their understanding of the risks these agents pose in a surgical setting, and their preferences for the continued use of the agents during and after oculoplastic surgery. To obtain these data, the authors prospectively surveyed 129 patients who had an oculoplastic surgery clinical evaluation at our tertiary care academic facility. Because no previously validated questionnai

[Methods of surgical reconstruction of the conjunctiva].

Reconstruction of the conjunctiva is required for restoration of damaged ocular surface and is an essential part of that process. Traumas, chemical and thermal burns, multiple surgical intervention can seriously damage the integrity of conjunctival tissue and promote the growth of fibrous tissue, scarring of contractures and their shortening, as well as other complications such as trichiasis, erosion and ulcers on the cornea. When a larger area is affected, there may not be enough donor tissue to replace the defect, in which case the tissue grafts are required to be large enough. Modern modifi

[Surgical repair of complex ureteral injuries: three clinical cases and analysis of different technical approaches.].

There are many causesof ureteral injury being the main one iatrogenic. The reconstruction depends on the injury´s locationand length. In some complex cases, we must do ureteralreconstructions using bowel segments. Thesetechniques are a challenge for the surgeon and arenot exempt of short and long-term complications. Our purpose is to present three complex ureteralinjury cases, and to analyze the main technical variants. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We present threeclinical cases with long length ureteral injuries treatedin our hospital. RESULTS: None of the cases presented had complicationsin the immed
