[Increase in intentional paracetamol poisoning in Chile (2019-2023): A study from the UC Toxicology Information Center].

UNLABELLED: Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is one of the most widely used analgesics and antipyretics in the world. It's easy acquisition, however, has frequently involved it in accidental and intentional poisonings, which, depending on the dose ingested, could lead to liver damage. To counteract this problem, several countries and agencies have regulated the sale and use of paracetamol. Even so, recent studies have shown an increase in suicidal intoxications using paracetamol or other drugs, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. AIM: Characterize the variation in the number of paracetamol poi

Patterns of acute poisoning for children during outbreak of Corona virus in Makkah region Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Poisoning occurs when a person is exposed to an external substance at a too high dose for them. It is possible for young children to be exposed to chemicals. Lungs, the heart, CNS, the digestive tract, and kidneys can be poisoned. In 2004, over 45,000 children and teenagers died from acute poisoning, representing 13% of all accidental poisoning deaths worldwide. Poisoning patterns vary by exposure type, age group, poison type, and dose. AIM: This study assessed the pattern of acute poisoning with drugs, chemicals, and natural toxins among children (<12 years old). The study was do

Diagnosis and management of the poisoned child.

Pediatric toxic ingestions are treated commonly by pediatricians and emergency physicians. Significant injury after these ingestions is infrequent, but identifying the dangerous ingestion is sometimes a difficult task. By performing a detailed history, focused physical examination, and directed laboratory evaluation, an estimation of risk can be developed. This article introduced the term "toxic triage" to describe this process. The toxic triage estimation allows the clinician to make thoughtful decontamination and treatment decisions. Familiarity with the literature supporting or refuting eac

Poisoning of mice by Baccharis coridifolia: an experimental model.

The poisonous plant Baccharis coridifolia causes necrosis in lymphoid tissues and the gastrointestinal tract of cattle, horses, sheep and rabbits. An experimental poisoning of mice was undertaken to establish an experimental model in a laboratory animal specie. A single 5 to 8-g/kg dose of a suspension of the plant was administered by gavage to 11 mice. To 3 other control mice, the same volume of water was administered. Plant-dosed mice manifested clinical effects after 12 h: tachipnea, trembles, dehydration and prostration. Most of the dosed mice died 14 to 33 h after plant administration--3

Acute colchicine poisoning: prediction of in-hospital mortality at hospital admission using a nomogram. A bicenter retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Acute colchicine poisoning is associated with high mortality. Early identification of high-risk patients is crucial for timely intervention. The prognostic value of plasma colchicine concentration (ColC) has not been previously studied. The objective was to develop a nomogram for predicting in-hospital mortality in acute colchicine poisoning using admission ColC and time elapsed since ingestion. METHODS: We conducted a bicenter retrospective cohort study (2000-2020). Patients with colchicine poisoning from a French toxicology critical care service and an Italian poison control cent

Assessment of respiratory rate-oxygenation index (ROX), HACOR score and the C-reactive protein for prediction of mechanical ventilation and mortality in acutely intoxicated patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory toxicity is a common presenting emergency in acutely poisoned patients. Unpredictable respiratory deterioration can occur regardless of the on-admission patients' stable state, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the respiratory rate-oxygenation (ROX) index, heart rate, acidosis, consciousness, oxygenation and respiratory rate (HACOR) score and C-reactive protein (CRP) as predictors of mechanical ventilation (MV) in poisoned patients. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on poisoned patients with acute respiratory f

[Drug poisonings in childhood at a regional poisons unit].

BACKGROUND: Drug poisonings in childhood account with about one fourth for the most important group of poisonings in this age group. METHOD: From 1995 to 2004 the inquiries to a poison centre regarding drug poisonings of children < or = 6 years of age were analyzed. Additionally, a standardized questionnaire was sent for follow-up information. RESULTS: During the study period a total number of 17 553 cases of drug poisonings in childhood was determined and follow-up information was obtained for 8 590 cases (48.9 %). Boys were more likely to be affected (53.4 %) and most children were between

Epidemiology from 1988 to 2020 of domestic and drug poisonings: analysis of the CIGUE database of Lille Poison Control Centre.

BACKGROUND: Poisonings are a common reason for consultation, yet long-run large-scale French epidemiology is scarce. The Lille Poison Control Centre's historic CIGUE database, curated from 1988 to 2020, offers a 33-year window on exposures across ages and contexts. AIM: To improve primary care prevention by characterising trends, risk groups, and substances in cases reported to the Centre, using indicators aligned with international studies. METHOD: Retrospective descriptive analysis (1988-2020) of the CIGUE (Centrale d'Informations et de Gestion en Urgences des Empoisonnements) database (SQ

Management of toxic alcohol poisoning in New South Wales: a retrospective study.

CONTEXT: Toxic alcohol poisoning causes significant morbidity and mortality, especially when treatment is delayed. We describe the epidemiology, management and outcomes of clinically significant toxic alcohol poisonings in New South Wales. We also evaluate the frequency and choice of antidotal therapies (fomepizole versus ethanol) and complications of poisoning and treatment. METHODS: We searched databases of the New South Wales Poisons Information Centre, and six tertiary clinical toxicology services. We included toxic alcohol poisonings referred to a clinical toxicologist, which met the ind

The outcome of North American pediatric unintentional mushroom ingestions with various decontamination treatments: an analysis of 14 years of TESS data.

The optimum empiric decontamination therapy for unintentional pediatric mushroom ingestion is not known. We sought to determine case outcomes for unintentional mushroom ingestions in children by decontamination therapies utilized. The 1992-2005 American Association of Poison Control Centers Toxic Exposure Surveillance System was queried for cases of unintentional acute mushroom ingestions in children age <6 years. Cases were excluded if outcome was unknown, if exposure was coded as unrelated to the symptoms, or if there was co-ingestion of a non-mycoid substance. The treatment subgroups analyz…

Identifying and quantifying exposures involving counterfeit opioid analgesic products.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing presence of counterfeit opioid drugs in the United States can contaminate data collection systems and confound estimates derived from surveillance of the opioid epidemic. Data sources and analyses that can quantify the contribution of counterfeit opioid products are needed to provide accurate and timely data to inform public health responses. We describe a novel approach to identify and quantify intentional abuse and misuse exposures involving suspected counterfeit opioid products in United States poison center data. METHODS: An ecological study was performed usin
