Association between neonatal morbidities and head growth from birth until discharge in very-low-birthweight infants born preterm: a population-based study.

AIM: To evaluate the possible association between major neonatal morbidities and poor head growth from birth to discharge home in very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants born preterm. METHOD: Population-based observational study comprising 12 992 infants (6340 male, 6652 female) of 24 to 32 weeks' gestation, and birthweight ≤1500g. Severe head growth failure (HGF) was defined as a decrease in head circumference z-score >2 z-scores, and moderate HGF as a decrease of 1 to 2 z-scores. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was applied to determine morbidities associated with HGF. RESULTS: Severe

Fetal size in a rural melanesian population with minimal risk factors for growth restriction: an observational ultrasound study from Papua New Guinea.

We conducted a prospective longitudinal study of fetal size in rural Papua New Guinea (PNG) involving 439 ultrasound-dated singleton pregnancies with no obvious risk factors for growth restriction. Sonographically estimated fetal weights (EFWs; N = 788) and birth weights (N = 376) were included in a second-order polynomial regression model (optimal fit) to generate fetal weight centiles. Means for specific fetal biometric measurements were also estimated. Fetal weight centiles from a healthy PNG cohort were consistently lower than those derived from Caucasian and Congolese populations, which o

Maternal lipid profile in early pregnancy is associated with foetal growth and the risk of a child born large-for-gestational age: a population-based prospective cohort study : Maternal lipid profile in early pregnancy and foetal growth.

BACKGROUND: Lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides play an important role in both maternal and foetal energy metabolism. Little is known about maternal lipid levels in pregnancy and their effect on foetal growth. The aim of this study was to assess maternal lipid levels, foetal growth and the risk of small-for-gestational age (SGA) and large-for-gestational age (LGA). METHODS: We included 5702 women from the Generation R Study, a prospective population-based cohort. Maternal lipid levels (total cholesterol, triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-c]) were measured in

Case-Control Genotyping of the c.788C>T Variant of Transforming Growth Factor-Beta 1 Gene in Otosclerosis in the South Indian Population.

BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is a common conductive hearing loss resulting from abnormal bone metabolism. The c.788C>T variant in the transforming growth factor-beta 1 gene is associated with otosclerosis in all studied populations, except the Indian population. In this study, we predicted the functional effects of reported variants in transforming growth factor-beta 1 and analyzed the c.788C>T variant in a case-control cohort from India and in the genomes present in public databases. METHODS: Clinically confirmed otosclerosis cases (n=120) and controls (n=120) were recruited and genotyped by pol

Towards understanding the effects of oceanic plastic pollution on population growth for a South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis australis) colony in Chile.

Entanglement of pinnipeds with plastic debris is an emerging conservation and animal welfare issue worldwide. However, the origins and long-term population level consequences of these entanglements are usually unknown. Plastic entanglement could produce a combination of wounds, asphyxiation, or inability to feed that results in the death of a certain percentage of individuals from the total population. In this research, we report on the consequent effect of plastic entanglement on population growth demographics in a South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis australis) colony on Guafo Is

Effects of high di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure due to tainted food intake on pre-pubertal growth characteristics in a Taiwanese population.

On May 23, 2011, a major scandal involving the illegal use of phthalates as clouding agents in food products was reported. Specifically, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was purposefully added to foods as a substitute emulsifier. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of DEHP exposure on the growth characteristics of the child victims of this scandal. Eighty-eight victims, originating from northern, central, and southern Taiwan and ranging in age from 6.0 to 10.5 years, were invited to participate in this study during clinic visits. The participants underwent follow-up health ex

Beta cell count instead of beta cell mass to assess and localize growth in beta cell population following pancreatic duct ligation in mice.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic-tail duct ligation (PDL) in adult rodents has been reported to induce beta cell generation and increase beta cell mass but increases in beta cell number have not been demonstrated. This study examines whether PDL increases beta cell number and whether this is caused by neogenesis of small clusters and/or their growth to larger aggregates. METHODOLOGY: Total beta cell number and its distribution over small (<50 µm), medium, large (>100 µm) clusters was determined in pancreatic tails of 10-week-old mice, 2 weeks after PDL or sham. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: PDL increased total

Density dependence in establishment, growth and worm fecundity in intestinal helminthiasis: the population biology of Trichuris muris (Nematoda) infection in CBA/Ca mice.

The results are presented of an experimental study of the population biology of chronic Trichuris muris (Nematoda) infection in cortisone-treated CBA/Ca mice. Attention is focused upon both the validity of the common use of faecal egg counts to demonstrate density dependence in helminth fecundity, and the identification of other possible density-dependent mechanisms that may regulate worm numbers in chronic trichuriasis. The results show that faecal egg counts, although demonstrating high daily variation, are not an artefact of host faecal output but a significant density-dependent function of

Reduction of stillbirths in England from 2008 to 2017 according to uptake of the Growth Assessment Protocol: 10-year population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Antenatal detection of small-for-gestational age (SGA) can reduce significantly the risk of stillbirth. The Growth Assessment Protocol (GAP) was developed to address the problem that most SGA fetuses are missed antenatally. We set out to analyze the effect that the GAP program has had on stillbirth rates in England. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2008 (the year before roll-out of the GAP program) to 2017 (latest available Office for National Statistics (ONS) unit-based data). The program consists of five elements: training, evidence-based guidelines for risk assessment and surveill

Screening Performance of Placental Growth Factor for the Prediction of Low Birth Weight and Adverse Intrapartum and Neonatal Outcomes in a Term Low-Risk Population.

INTRODUCTION: Fetuses who fail to reach their genetic growth potential are thought to have sub-optimal placental function. Low placental growth factor (PlGF) levels have been shown to be predictive of placentally mediated conditions, such as pre-eclampsia or fetal growth restriction. We investigated the screening performance of PlGF for the prediction of low birth weight (<10th centile for gestation) and adverse intrapartum and neonatal outcomes in apparently low-risk term pregnancies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maternal PlGF levels were measured fortnightly in a blinded, prospective, observation
