This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of various metabolic blockers on the Na-K-pump activity and ATP content of frog erythrocytes. To eliminate K-Cl cotransport, the frog erythrocytes were incubated in nitrate media at 20 degrees C. The respiratory O2 consumption of vegetative, non-necrotic, Lewis lung carcinoma cells was found to be very low compared with that of non-tumor tissues and was highly resistant to cyanide. RATIONALE: High-temperature, conversion-reduction (HTC) systems convert hydrogen and oxygen in materials into H2 and CO for δ(2)H and δ(18)O measurements by isotope ratio mass spectrometry. HTC of nitrogen- and sulfur-bearing materials produces unintended byproduct gases that could affect isotope analyses by: (1) allowing isotope exchange reactions downstream of the HTC reactor, (2) creating isobaric or co-elution interferences, and (3) causing deterioration of the chromatography. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) or intravenous hydroxocobalamin (OHCob) both abolish cyanide (CN)-induced surges in interstitial brain lactate and glucose concentrations. The effects of sodium selenite on the neuromuscular junction of the phrenic nerve-diaphragm of the mouse were studied. Nerve-evoked twitches of the diaphragm of the mouse, the frequency of miniature endplate potentials, the quantal content of endplate potentials and the compound action potentials of the axon were measured.
