Changing homelessness services: revanchism, 'professionalisation' and resistance.

This paper argues that the increasing international salience of homelessness can be partially explained by reference to the revanchist thesis (involving processes of coerced exclusion and abjection), but the situation on the ground is more complex. It reports on interviews with 18 representatives of 11 homelessness service providers in one city in England. As Cloke et al. found, these providers tended to be either larger, more 'professional', 'insider' services or smaller, more 'amateur', 'outsider' services. However, this does not mean that the former were necessarily more revanchist and the

Understanding sadomasochism: an empirical examination of four perspectives.

Three studies assessed current understandings of sadomasochism (SM). In Study 1 questionnaires testing four academic views of SM were administered to individuals who self-defined as involved in SM. The psychoanalytic, psychopathology/medical model, radical feminist and escape-from-self perspectives were not supported. Study 2 examined "virtual" sadomasochism as a source of information about sadomasochists in the real life world. Cluster analyses indicated that real-life and virtual sadomasochists share unique sexual proclivities. Study 3 examined an alternative view that identifies power as th

Jealousy induction as a predictor of power and the use of other control methods in heterosexual relationships.

26 male and 87 female college students filled out Stets' Psychological Aggression Scale, Stets' Interpersonal Control Scale, Straus' Physical Violence Scale, and Fisch and Brainerd's Use and Approval of Jealousy-inducing Behaviors Scale. Use and approval of jealousy-inducing behaviors were good predictors of high need for interpersonal control and the use of psychological aggression. The use of jealousy-inducing behaviors but not the approval of these behaviors was a strong predictor of physical aggression in romantic relationships.

Life stage differences in resident coping with restart of the Three Mile Island nuclear generating facility.

A study of residents who remained in the vicinity of Three Mile Island (TMI) immediately following the restart of the nuclear generating plant revealed that older residents employed a more emotion-focused coping style in the face of this event than did younger residents. Coping style was, however, unrelated to the level of psychological symptoms for these older residents, whereas demographic variables were related. Among younger residents, on the other hand, coping style was related to the level of psychological symptoms, whereas demographic variables were not. Among younger residents, emotion

Daily Fluctuations in Adolescents' Perceived Friend Dominance and Friendship Clout: Associations with Mood and the Moderating Role of Anxiety.

Emerging evidence suggests that whereas occupying high peer status promotes adolescents' well-being, feeling dominated by friends confers psychological costs. However, little is known about day-to-day power dynamics of adolescents' friendships or their acute affective consequences. This 14-day intensive longitudinal study introduced novel daily assessments of friend dominance and friendship clout, examined their associations with mood, and tested anxiety as a moderator. Participants were 195 11th-graders (Mage = 16.48, SDage = 0.35; 66% female). Multilevel models revealed that adolescents expe

Orpha and Creativity-Alda Merini: Poet of Trauma.

My study is inspired by the clinical and meta-psychological contributions of Sándor Ferenczi, an underexplored voice, in the psychoanalytic understanding of creative processes. Ferenczi discusses fragmentation and reconstruction in the realm of creativity, and the creative reconstructive power of Orpha (Ferenczi, 1932a), a force against psychic death, following traumatic experience. To illustrate the creative process, I refer to the discourse on trauma and creativity, in the diary of the Italian poet Alda Merini (1986), fuelled by her post-traumatic narrative of her history of physical, psycho

Quality of statistical reporting in developmental disability journals.

Null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) dominates quantitative data analysis, but its use is controversial and has been heavily criticized. The American Psychological Association has advocated the reporting of effect sizes (ES), confidence intervals (CIs), and statistical power analysis to complement NHST results to provide a more comprehensive understanding of research findings. The aim of this paper is to carry out a sample survey of statistical reporting practices in two journals with the highest h5-index scores in the areas of developmental disability and rehabilitation. Using a checkl

Continuing to acknowledge the power of dehumanizing environments: Comment on Haslam et al. (2019) and Le Texier (2019).

Decades after it was conducted, the Stanford Prison Experiment endures as a classic, dramatic demonstration of the potentially destructive psychological dynamics that can be created when one group of people is given nearly total power over a group of derogated others in a powerful, dehumanizing environment such as prison. The authors of the study value the intellectually engaged alternative perspectives that continue to be used to discuss its unsettling results but reject those that are ad hominem, misleading, inaccurate, and unscientific. Condom negotiation among adolescent mothers in a resource-constrained setting: a COM-B analysis with implications for sexual and reproductive health.

Condom negotiation among adolescents is a critical component of sexual and reproductive health, yet significant gaps persist between knowledge and behaviour. Traditional interventions focus on awareness and place less emphasis on how environmental pressures and internal emotional factors interact to disrupt negotiation. This qualitative study explores the behavioural determinants of condom negotiation among adolescent mothers, specifically examining how capabilities, opportunities, and motivations influence sexual health choices within the COM-B framework. Data collection focused on assessing

EEG-ERP Correlates of Cognitive Dysfunction in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) has been shown to affect the psychological and cognitive status of a woman. However, amidst various conflicting reports in this regard, very few studies attempted to assess these aspects objectively using electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potential (ERP). PURPOSE: To assess changes in neurocognitive and psychological parameters of PCOS women without any other comorbidities. METHODS: PCOS women aged 18 years to 35 years, diagnosed from obstetrics and gynecology OPD who are otherwise free of any other comorbidities, were assessed for

The phenomena of auditory hallucination as described by Indonesian people living with schizophrenia.

This study was a phenomenological inquiry of the experience of auditory hallucinations as described by 13 Indonesian people diagnosed with schizophrenia. The interviewees included 6 men and 7 women and they were aged between 19 and 56 years. Four themes emerged from this study: feeling more like a robot than a human being; voices of contradiction--a point of confusion; tattered relationships and family disarray; and normalizing the presence of voices as part of everyday life. The findings of this study have the potential to contribute to new understandings of how people live with and manage au

Beyond bullying: Aggravating elements of peer victimization episodes.

This study sought to identify features of peer victimization that aggravate negative outcomes in children. The features that were assessed include "power imbalance," a commonly used criterion in defining bullying, and 5 other characteristics: injury, weapon involvement, Internet involvement, sexual content, and bias content. Three outcomes were assessed: level of fear, missing school, and trauma symptoms. A nationally representative sample of 3,164 children and youth ages 6-17 (51.8% male; 68.4% white, 12.5% black, 13.5% Hispanic, 5.7% other race) was obtained through Random Digit Dial and sup

Patient knowledge in inflammatory bowel disease: the Crohn's and Colitis Knowledge Score.

In the UK, key professional organizations have joined to provide inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) standards to be delivered by the NHS, highlighting the importance of patient education and support. The Crohn's and Colitis Knowledge Score (CCKNOW) is a validated multiple-choice questionnaire on the subject of IBD that is able to objectively quantify the level of patient knowledge. The aim of this study was to summarize the findings of the CCKNOW, in particular, the current level of patient knowledge and the implications clinically. Literature search was conducted using Medline, Google Scholar a

Commentary: a patient-centered theory of satisfaction.

The Primary Provider Theory holds that patient satisfaction occurs at the nexus of provider power and patient expectations. More specifically, patient satisfaction is principally the function of an underlying network of interrelated satisfaction constructs--satisfaction with the primary provider, waiting for the provider, and satisfaction with the provider's assistant(s). Hierarchically linked to patient-centered expectations of provider value, the Theory specifies that primary providers offer the greatest clinical utility to patients. The Theory is operationalized by patient-centered measures

Power without limits: exploring emotional regulation, moral authority, and psychiatric overreach through the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatry has never had more tools to relieve psychological suffering. Psychopharmacology, neuromodulation, early intervention, digital monitoring, and preventive approaches have expanded what clinicians can do. Yet this growing technical capacity also raises an uneasy question: when does care become control? Cultural narratives can offer spaces for examining such tensions, particularly when they dramatize power, vulnerability, suffering, and moral authority. AIM: This narrative review uses the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as a conceptual lens to examine emotional regulation,
