Does Childhood Psychological Abuse Contribute to Intimate Partner Violence Victimization? An Investigation Using the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Interview.

Although psychological abuse is recognized as a particularly insidious form of child abuse, research on the impact of this type of abuse related to intimate partner violence (IPV) is scant. This study examined the contribution of childhood psychological abuse to IPV in female victims and non-victims. Furthermore, it investigated the role of cumulative abuse in predicting IPV. The study included 38 women victims of IPV and 40 non-IPV women. All participants were investigated using the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Interview (CECA); the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2) and the IPV

Are visual analogue scales valid instruments to measure psychological pain in psychiatric patients?

OBJECTIVE: The Psychological-Physical-Pain Visual Analogue Scale (PPP-VAS) was thought to probably help in identifying patients at risk of suicide. However, no data on its validity to measure psychological pain was available. Our main aim was to investigate the convergent validity of the PPP-VAS using two well-validated scales of psychological pain, the Orbach and Mikulincer Mental Pain scale (OMMP) and the Holden et al. Psychache Scale. METHODS: This multicentre study recruited a total of 1618 adult psychiatric inpatients and outpatients in Italy. Psychological pain was evaluated using the O

Quality of engagement with in-the-moment digital CBT during periods of distress: A study of patients with suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Practicing CBT skills outside of therapy sessions is a core component of effective treatment, yet meaningful engagement can be difficult during periods of elevated psychological distress. Smartphone-based ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) offer a promising approach to support real-time skill use, but most research has focused on frequency rather than quality of engagement. This study examined the quality of CBT skills practice in a 28-day smartphone-based EMI following inpatient discharge and explored its associations with internal context and intervention effectiveness. Twenty-three a

The GP Survival Kit: an educational tool to support trainees during the transition from hospital to community-based training.

The transition from hospital-based training to community general practice is a challenging period for GP trainees, characterised by clinical uncertainty, increased responsibility, and a high emotional and cognitive load. There is limited literature describing practical educational tools designed specifically to support trainees during this transition. This paper describes the development, educational rationale, pilot implementation and potential applications of the GP Survival Kit. The GP survival kit is a box containing 13 everyday items, each symbolising a core concept relevant to safe and e

Substantiating the need for primary care-based sexual health promotion interventions for ethnic minority adolescent women experiencing health disparities.

PURPOSE: Assess the context of psychological distress, violence, and substance use among African- and Mexican-American adolescent women with a history of STI, violence, or high sexual risk behavior. These adolescents experience multiple health disparities, limited access to care, and are at particularly high risk of adverse sexual health outcomes. The results will inform sexual health promotion interventions provided by advanced practice nurses in primary care-based settings for women experiencing these disparities. METHODS: Analysis of self-report data obtained at study entry from African- a

A review of neuropsychological services in the United Kingdom for patients being considered for epilepsy surgery.

We report a review of the current practice of neuropsychologists working within epilepsy surgery services. The aim of the review was to examine areas of diversity and consensus across current national service provision and to examine progress in service delivery since a previous survey in 1994. Sixteen centres provided information via a questionnaire on three areas of clinical practice: pre- and post-surgery neuropsychological protocols; the intracarotid sodium amytal protocol; patient and family expectations and psychological health, in addition to examining aspects of the context of clinical

Resilience, Pain Self-efficacy and Health-related Quality of Life in Greek Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Regardless of the recent advances in Chronic Kidney Disease stage 5 (CKD-5) management people on dialysis face significant changes in their quality of life. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between psychological resilience and quality of life in patients undergoing in-center hemodialysis. METHODS: An initial sample of 150 adult patients on hemodialysis for more than 6 months was selected from hospitals in a Southern European country. The study used the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ), and the Kidney Disease

Live nondirected uterus donors: Psychological characteristics and motivation for donation.

Emerging research suggests that uterus transplantation is a viable option for women without a uterus who want to become pregnant and carry a child to term. Currently, no knowledge exists regarding nondirected uterus donors. This study (NCT 02656550) explored the baseline psychological characteristics of nondirected uterus donors at a single study site. Of the 62 potential donors who underwent initial screening, 6 nondirected donors were chosen and participated in uterus donation. Participants received a comprehensive evaluation, which included clinical history and psychological assessments. Th

Does immediate imitation influence long-term memory for observed actions?

Long-term memory for object-related information acquired observationally was studied among younger and older toddlers under two conditions of acquisition and retention: direct imitation followed by reproduction after a 10 min delay (delayed imitation), and deferred imitation. A principal aim was to determine whether direct imitation fosters a form of enactive representation that improves long-term memory, or whether such memory is influenced more by visual encoding factors. Tasks consisted of five simple action combinations or separations. Results indicated that post-test scores were higher un

Prevalence of psychological symptoms among adults with sickle cell disease in Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Previous research revealed high prevalence of psychological symptoms among sickle cell disease (SCD) patients in the West and Europe. In some Black SCD populations such as Nigeria and Jamaica, anxiety and depression had low prevalence rates compared to Europe. With difficulty locating research data on the prevalence of psychological symptoms in Ghana, this study aimed at exploring psychological symptoms among adults with SCD in a Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. METHODS: Two hundred and one participants (males 102 and females 99) who were HbSS (n = 131) and HbSC (n = 70), aged 1

Respiratory Symptoms and Psychological Distress in Farmers Living With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

BACKGROUND: Farmers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often face both respiratory issues and psychological distress, which can exacerbate their condition. However, no prior research has examined how the frequency of respiratory symptoms is associated to psychological distress in these individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to explore this relationship among U.S. farmers living with COPD. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involved 101 participants, a mix of on-site and online recruits, assessing respiratory symptoms and psychological distress in farmers with COPD. The study em

Psychology's Contributions to Anti-Blackness in the United States Within Psychological Research, Criminal Justice, and Mental Health.

The mass incarceration of Black people in the United States is gaining attention as a public-health crisis with extreme mental-health implications. Although it is well documented that historical efforts to oppress and control Black people in the United States helped shape definitions of mental illness and crime, many psychologists are unaware of the ways the field has contributed to the conception and perpetuation of anti-Blackness and, consequently, the mass incarceration of Black people. In this article, we draw from existing theory and empirical evidence to demonstrate historical and contem

Using Videoconferencing to Deliver Individual Therapy and Pediatric Psychology Interventions with Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Because of the widening access gap between need for individual and pediatric psychology services and child specialist availability, secure videoconferencing options are more needed than ever to address access challenges across underserved settings. METHODS: The authors summarize real-time videoconferencing evidence to date across individual therapy with children and pediatric psychology interventions using videoconferencing. The authors summarize emerging guidelines that inform best practices for individual child therapy over videoconferencing. RESULTS: The authors present three

Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Measuring health-related quality of life (HRQOL) gained relevance in research and clinical practice in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis. The physical discomfort and social and psychological consequences of this food-related disease substantially affect HRQOL. Determinant of an impaired HRQOL include symptom severity, disease duration, biological disease activity, and psychological factors. Patients prioritize symptom relief and improved HRQOL as treatment objectives. Available treatment options can address these goals; however, there is a suboptimal adherence to treatment. There is a nee

Psychological factors affecting medical condition: a new proposal for DSM-V.

The DSM category of "psychological factors affecting medical condition" had virtually no impact on clinical practice. However, several clinically relevant psychosomatic syndromes have been described in the literature: disease phobia, persistent somatization, conversion symptoms, illness denial, demoralization, and irritable mood. These syndromes, in addition to the DSM definition of hypochondriasis, can yield clinical specification in the category of "psychological factors affecting medical condition" and eliminate the need for the highly criticized DSM classification of somatoform disorders.

The rise and fall of the lyme disease vaccines: a cautionary tale for risk interventions in American medicine and public health.

CONTEXT: Two vaccines to prevent Lyme disease (LD) were developed and tested in the 1990s. Despite evidence of their safety and efficacy in clinical trials and initial postmarketing surveillance, one vaccine was withdrawn before the regulatory review and the other after only three years on the market. An investigation of their history can illuminate (1) the challenges faced by many new risk-reducing products and practices and (2) the important role played by their social and psychological, as distinct from their biomedical or scientific, efficacy in how they are used, and their ultimate market

Schema Therapy for Individuals With Subthreshold Autistic Traits and Recurrent Depressive Disorder: A Case Study.

Schema therapy (ST) is a therapeutic approach to address chronic and complex psychological difficulties. ST is also used to treat mental health problems that individuals on the autism spectrum have. However, no practical reports exist on its application to cases involving subthreshold autistic traits with associated psychological difficulties. This report describes schema therapy for a woman with subthreshold autistic traits and raised in an abusive environment. The intervention was based on schema therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum and consisted of a total of 42 sessions. The effe

What's "normal": female genital mutilation, psychology, and body image.

Despite international efforts to halt the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), the number of African girls and women undergoing the procedure is not declining as rapidly as international observers had hoped when the World Health Organization began focusing attention on the practice in the 1960s. This article focuses on the psychological effects of FGM through the example of a patient who had undergone the procedure in childhood and now felt that her closed appearance was "normal" and that to be opened would be "abnormal." Western advocates must educate themselves about the various cult
